Whoops - I think this was just because I did not have the audio on! But then... there does seem to be a bonus hang in there after all: if I have audio on, the patches both launch successfully, but, if I then click the bang in OPEN-ME.pd again, there's no response: everything hangs. hello, you're right, audio must be on, in both patch. it is still hanging on the 2nd time, but it's not related to the loadbanged stdout. see attachement.
