[PD] Can Pd rescan MIDI devices while running?

2016-10-18 Thread William Huston
I've searched the list archives and do not find an answer to this.

Would be nice to be able to plug in a new device
and have Pd see it without exit/restart.

Thanks.

Re: [PD] Fwd: [PD-dev] [pure-data:bugs] #1273 feature request - paste from clipboard

2016-10-18 Thread Ivica Bukvic
Pd-l2Ork supports universal clipboard but is somewhat limited by the Tcl/Tk
idiosyncrasies, like having to start the application and then copying
because the preexisting system clipboard is not actually recognized by the
toolkit. It also supports pasting actual text from the patches into an
existing patch which I suspect is the inverse of what you're speaking of.
However, if you paste something incomplete it may result in a crash for
which I have not figured it a workaround. As a perhaps pointless courtesy,
if you do paste something that compromises Pd-L2Ork, it will give you one
last message in the console before it crashes and burns and will let you
know what is the reason for the pending crash.

Best,

Re: [PD] Fwd: [PD-dev] [pure-data:bugs] #1273 feature request - paste from clipboard

2016-10-18 Thread Alexandre Torres Porres
It's a terrible name by the way, it'd make much more sense call it "copy to
clipboard"

You may notice it doesn't have an option in the edit mode to paste the
selection copied clipboard, that happens if you go to file and select "new
from clipboard".

Thus, it only creates a new file. Unlike the feature you have in Purr Data,
which is much better and more powerful. I like a lot, as it allows to copy
to a newly opened file or to a patch already opened and with more stuff in
it.

But I guess a "new from clipboard" could also be a 2nd option, also
convenient, when you want to open a patch from a clipboard instead of a
file.

So yeah, "copy/paste to/from clipboard" in the edit section and maybe also
"new from clipboard" in the file section

by the way, this would make life quite easier for us in the Pd-list, by
copying code into the email and not worry about attachments. This is also
true for forums out there.

About Purr Data, it's cool that you automatically know that it is some code
from the clipboard and you can paste it like anything else. I guess you can
leave it like that, and also add the other options.

The difference in using "paste from clipboard" is that it wouldn't give
you any warning (maybe add a shortcut too?).

cheers

Oh, so you want to be able to copy an arbitrary selection in a patch to the
clipboard.
I believe that's doable.

wow, I hadn't thought of that, that is actually brilliant and I face this
problem quite often by the way.
Like, copying something from extended to vanilla, but also from different
instances of vanilla. Now with Purr Data we could make it so that copying parts
of patches between them quite easily.
It would require just two new edit options, "copy to clipboard" and "paste from
clipboard", maybe also accessible via a secondary click

i like this idea a lot. Among other things it would let us copy-paste patches
between different instances of Pd. I had imagined having Pd's own copy/paste
"type" but actually just using text and having Pd "consider" it as a patch
fragment for copy/paste operations is brilliant.

There already is a dnd object in ix extensions but I think it's obsolete
now.

I would also expect a dnd behavior from GUI objects like

[PD] drag and drop a filename

2016-10-18 Thread oliver

hi,

since IOhannes just mentioned "dropsuite"

has there ever been a sort of classic "drag and drop" feature for useage
inside patches ?

like:

you drop a file onto a window (or even better: a specific spot) and get
the filename as a symbol from an outlet or a receive object ?

that would make f.e. soundfile loading sooo much nicer and easier

i know about (and successfully use) dropsuites plugins but right now
it's only two of them and (at least to my understanding) they can not do
this.

[PD] [PD-announce] Sounding Out The Space Conference

2016-10-18 Thread Kerry Hagan
SOUNDING OUT THE SPACE: AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE SPATIALITY OF SOUND

Date: 2–4 November 2017
Location: Dublin School of Creative Arts, DIT Grangegorman Campus
Organisers: DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin School of
Creative Arts, GradCAM
Partners: Contemporary Music Centre, Irish Sound Science and Technology
Association, Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Society for Musicology in Ireland,
Solstice Gallery, Spatial Music Collective

Conference website: soundingout2017.com

Keynote Speakers:
Brandon LaBelle – artist, writer and theorist (Bergan Academy of Art and Design)
Bill Fontana – American artist and composer

Sound is an inherently spatial phenomenon. No matter what its point of
origin, be it a musical instrument, a voice, an audio speaker, or
another sound-producing entity, sound must navigate space before
reaching our ears. On this journey it enters into a complex relational
dynamic with the surrounding environment: it may be amplified,
distorted, reverberated, dissipated and subject to a multitude of
transformations which modify it in different ways. While this dynamic
is an intrinsic part of any sonic event, certain artistic endeavours
have sought to exploit this spatial aspect of sound as a distinct
parameter in its own right. Though spatial experiments have a long
history in western music stretching back centuries, the search for
novel means of expression in the twentieth century led to an
unprecedented investigation into the spatiality of sound as an
integral component of the work. From Edgard Varèse’s Poème
électronique to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet,
such concerns have been at the centre of some of the canonic works of
musical modernism. In the discipline of sound art, auditory dialogues
with the surrounding space have been the defining feature of sound
installations by Max Neuhaus, Bernhard Leitner, Maryanne Amacher and
others, who have sought to locate sound in relation to architecture.
While such work grew out of developments in the wider field of art
installation, increasingly the practices of both sound and art
installation have converged in the work of artists such as Janet
Cardiff and Zimoun forming multi-sensory experiences. Expanding
outwards, the multi-site sound installations of Bill Fontana have
developed the notion of spatiality across geographical locations while
recent innovations in communication and digital technologies have
created virtual networks, redefining our conception of space and
presenting new possibilities for music, sound art and visual art.

Although substantial research on the spatiality of sound has been
carried out within the disciplines of musicology, sound art, and
visual art studies, much of this work has remained separate, enclosed
within these specialised fields of research. This conference aims to
address this imbalance, acknowledging the fluid exchange of ideas
between these spheres in actual practice and fostering an
interdisciplinary spirit amongst researchers and practitioners. The
conference committee thus invites presentations from sound artists,
visual artists, composers, academics, and post-graduate researchers
which consider the spatiality of sound in all its diverse forms. While
the conference remit is broad, the committee especially encourages
contributions which address (but need not be limited by) the following
three strands:

• Sound and Visual Art

‒Convergences between Sound and Visual Art
‒Historical Perspectives
‒Installation
‒Modes of Listening

The filter recipe that Christof pointed to was easy to plug into the C

d_filter.c I came across an approximation function 'sigbp_qcos()' used

Miller is about efficiency. I'm not going to make a fool of myself by
submitting a 'fix' using two trig functions to calculate a filter
coefficient when a simple approximation could do the job. So that is
what I'm now looking into, with help of a math friend: an efficient
polynomial approximation for (1-sin(x))/cos(x).

according to libre office linear regression, for x between 0 and Pi,
(1-sin(x))/cos(x) is about :
-0.057255x³ + 0.27018x² - 0.9157x + 0.99344

the calc is in attachment, if you want to tune the input source or precision.

Thanks for your pointers Christof. The recipe you mention from
arpchord.com is different than iemlib's, but yields identical
normalization and feedback coefficients, thus the same beautiful
response. As you say, what's in the textbooks is common knowledge and
can be used by everyone. Now I'll try to get the same result in C.

By the way, [iemlib/hp~] seems to recalculate coefficients for every
dsp vector which explains the higher CPU load.

IMHO, the correct formular for the cutoff frequency below (which I guess is
also used in [hp1~] since the frequency response is the same) is 'common
knowledge', so I don't think you'd have to pay attention to any licence.

But coefficients aren't recalculated so
often, therefore this difference will be negligible.

That's a good point. You're right that both involve a feedback and feedforward,
so I'm wondering why [hp1~] needs more CPU... otherwise, iemlib's filters are
very efficient.

Anyway, I researched a bit and found the reason why the frequency response of
Pd filters seems 'wrong':

Miller uses a formular for calculating the cutoff frequency which is taken from
analog filters but is not really adequate for digital filters since it doesn't
reflect the cyclic nature of the digital domain (although you can see it in
some articles on digital filters).

Let's take [hip~] as an example:

the formular for a 1-pole 1-zero highpass goes:
y[n] = (x[n] - x[n-1]) * (1 + k) / 2   +   k * y[n-1]

Miller calculates the position of the pole with
k = 1 - (fc * 2*pi / SR).

The correct formular, however (if you want the frequency response to be zero at
Nyquist!), would be
k = (1-sin(a))/cos(a), where a = fc * 2*pi / SR.

You can find it here:
http://www.arpchord.com/pdf/coeffs_first_order_filters_0p1.pdf

BTW, the reason why [hip~] seems to get stuck at 7018 Hz is because Miller
clips the coefficient below 0, so it never reaches -1 (where the gain would be
all zero).

Also, there is another approximation with a similiar behaviour, which goes like
this:
k = e^(-2*pi*fc/SR). I could find it here: http://www.dspguide.com/ch19/2.htm
Here, the pole can only move from 1 to 0 and doesn't ever reach -1 as well.

Now, is the behaviour of [hip~] 'wrong'?
If you define at 1-pole 1-zero high pass filter as something which passes
everything at fc = DC and blocks everything at fc = Nyquist, then I'd say yes.
If it should roughly model an analogue filter (where the cutoff frequency can
go up to infinity) for low cutoff frequencies only, then I'd say no.

Also, as I tried to point out, this issue with the cutoff frequency is true for
all Pd filters!

So I think this behaviour should either be changed (great, if Katja is willing
to submit a patch!) or documented in the help patch (gain is not 0 at Nyquist!).

I'm not an engineer or any expert on filter design. It's just my two cents :-)

Christof

I'm pretty confident [hip~] would not loose its efficiency when using
iemlib's recipe. Both hi pass filters have a feed forward and feedback
component, with coefficients for normalization and feedback.
Calculation of these coefficients is a bit more involved with iemlib's
recipe, using trig functions. But coefficients aren't recalculated so
often, therefore this difference will be negligible.

To reassure, it is not my intention to spark another 'what's wrong
with pd' thread. If iemlib's license allows to use the recipe
