[PD] PD as VST plugin, legal side (was Purr-Data Google Summer of Code opportunity)

2019-03-07 Thread Chuckk Hubbard
Hi again,
I've been experimenting a bit and another question came to me, if anyone
knows the legal details:
Considering that vstplugin~ is not a program, but a library, and Pd itself,
according to Wikipedia, is not a program, but a programming language, won't
Big BrotherST have the right to start threatening me if I put out a PD
patch using this library to load VST 2.4 plugins? I do not have a VST
developer's license.
OR, considering that I won't distribute the library itself, only a program
that links to it (and which will not itself be able to distinguish which
version of the VST standard is being used) will they only have the right to
kiss my grits?

Genuinely concerned here. Thanks!
Chuckk

Re: [PD] chronometer + metronome that syncs multiple Android/iOS devices over network?

2019-03-07 Thread enrike

(I am fighting now with PdDroidPublisher as we would need to have an
apk that we can just install into participants mobiles. The
PdDroidPublisher documentation is outdated as far as I can see and I
far from being an expert in Android Studio configuration, lets see)

If you can get the PdDroidParty apk installed on the devices then it's
possible to distribute the patch as a zip file to the devices quite
easily. You can zip the patch folder and then rename the zip so it has a
`.dpz` extension. If a user has PdDroidParty installed and they receive
a .dpz file by email or click on a link to a .dpz file then it should
automatically open in PdDroidParty.

This still means you have to install two things (the DroidParty apk and
the .dpz file) but maybe it's easier than creating a custom apk and
easier than copying the folder onto SD cards one by one.

ok, this is actually quite a good method and it is rather painless
compared to installing and fighting with android studio/sdk/ndk etc...

More info about this can be found in the "Sharing your patches" section
on the droidparty.net site.

thanks I didnt see that sorry

The Ladspa version by Steve Harris doesn't look like a port. He has
just included the original code. I think the ladspa part of the gverb
ladspa plugin is autogenerated from some xml files.
You can find the same code at

Has anyone made a LADSPA plugin host for Pd?

I would think this would be a more attractive, open alternative. Depending
on it's license, the gigaverb DSP could be wrapped into a LADSPA plugin, if
it isn't already. LADSPA is cross platform and there are binary plugin
packs available.

Hi!
Thanks for the tip. I did come across this during my searching before.
I'd offer to help adapt it to run on Linux and OSX, but I did not foresee
Steinberg illegalizing VST2. I would not be legally allowed to do this
since I did not obtain a license before Oct 2018. I would gladly help with
testing, though. Any idea how much struggle would be involved? Are Linux
and OSX support something you'd consider?

The pd sources contain two versions of wrap_tilde_perform with a

and been fixed but somehow it doesn't seem to be resolved completely.

Does anybody have/know a fix? It is pretty important in my code as
this causes all kinds of strange behaviour in my dsp calculations.

Maybe people on other systems/architectures could also check if it
appears on their machines as well and report back.

yes.

just connect:

|
[< 1]
|
[print]

to see that what you perceive as "1" is really a wee bit smaller.

after that, try getting the error by replacing the above with:

|
[* 262144]
|
[- 262144]
|

any big number would do, but 262144 is a power of two (2^18), so it
keeps additional errors (introduced by the scaling) low.

the scale/subtraction gives an error of "-0.0625" (it should be "0", if
"1" really was "1"), which is -1/16.

unscaling gives an (absolute) error of 2^-22, which is about to be
expected when dealing with numbers in the 128-1024 range.

Search deken for vstplugin~ or checkout

It's a vst host for pd and supercollider. The alpha release is
vst2 only but a new (stable) release with vst3 support will be out
in a couple of days.

Bug #547 (which i linked earlier) is *related* but not exactly the same.

totally not. (as in: no this flag is currently not honoured; and i'm
pretty much opposed to a cmdline flag to turn any patching feature that
is only sometimes useful globally on/off)

As you say this is considered a feature by most users. It annoys me more
often than I find it useful and would have prefered to have it as an
opt-in feature where, when multiple objects are selected, I would have
to hold down shift while connecting patch cords to inlets to have them
fanned out automatically. Right now I feel I have to more intelligent
than before to avoid accidental connections. Seems to be a matter of
taste to have it in and enabled without modifier keys.

Now pd has this startup flag
-noautopatch
though I am not sure if this applied to the newest intelligent patching™
additions.
