Popular Photography Pentax Lens Tests

2002-05-17 Thread Joseph Tainter

I ordered some old tests. I generally rate lenses for sharpness by their
performance at 8 x 10 inch enlargements, the maximum size produced by my
Epson 870. Here's some of the interesting things I learned:

FA Power Zoom 28-105 f4-5.6. We all know this is a great lens, Well,
it's even surprisingly sharp wide open through nearly the whole zoom
range. Wide open at 28 is just a bit weak, but still good to 8 x 10
inches. Only weakness is in macro. Of course they're out of production.
Get one while you can.

F/FA 50 f1.7 vs. FA 43 f1.9. The 43 is very sharp from f4 on, and good
at f2.8. The 50 is better at f2.8 and and just slightly (1 point on the
SQF scale from 0 to 100 I think) less sharp at smaller apertures. But
guess what? The 50 is quite a bit sharper wide open. Guess I'll be
satisfied with my 50 f1.7.

FA 24 f2. Yep, a great lens. But we knew that. (I don't have one.)

FA 28-70 f2.8. Yes, it does f2.8 across the zoom range. But beyond 28
mm. it's not terribly sharp at 2.8.

FA 80-200 f2.8. Incredible. Sharp wide open across the zoom range. Can I
afford this lens? Do I want to carry it's weight? Do I wish I didn't
know how good it is?

I may not be able to answer questions right away - off for travel next
week.

You shouldn't be giving the film extra turns on the spokes or hooks. You
just insert the film past the spokes, make sure it catches on the
sprocket holes and then wind it into the spirals.

Hi Paul,

Good questions, welcome to the list!

Someone else will know the answer to your queries, but FYI the AF280T has
a reduced power setting in 'MS-L' . We worked it once and I've forgotten
the amount of reduction in flash power but I think it was 1/16th...

The reaosn I was interested was because I wanted to use a 280T on top of
my LX as daylight fill-in flash, which I managed to do. When you've got a
minute, have a look at:

Can you autograph my camera please?

2002-05-17 Thread Albano_Garcia

I just found it about OM guru, Maitani. I think it's worth sharing...

In the shirt pocket of Maitani, there is a shining pen. A pen that he has
been using for 30 years.
At first glance, it looks like a common ball pen. Actually, it is a special
 tool called a diamond pen.
It is usually used in factories for scribing control numbers and markings
on press moulds.
>From time to time, Olympus camera enthusiasts request Maitani to sign his
name on their camera bodies.
At first, Maitani used a hand-made diamond pen. After the introduction of
the OM System, more and more people asked for his autograph.
The factory workers at Olympus presented this diamond pen to Maitani, which
 he still uses it today.

RE: Pentax 67mm UV filter

2002-05-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What I need is a 67 that's threaded to accept a hood, yet as slim as possible to avoid
vignetting on my Rikenon 28-100/4, which is vignette-prone. That reduces my choices to
Pentax, Contax, and Heliopan slim multicoated. Bill Peiffer sent me some leads on B&H.
They have a Pentax bayonette filter, but it sounds as though it may not work on a 35.
Their Heliopan and B+W 67s you mentioned don't say multicoated.

By searching, I located a used Contax 67 for $25 and a used Pentax UV for $17. Though
the Pentax is said to be in only VG condition, I'll take a chance that the glass is
OK. I've just ordered it.

What grates me is that I ordered a B+W non-slim but multicoated filter from Tallyns
for $40. In ordering, I wrote, "This price sounds suspiciously low. Don't send it
unless you can assure me that it's the multicoated version." Well, the filter was
backordered, the final price was $43, and the filter I received was single-coated!

They're taking it back, but they've offered no explanation.

Hi Paul,

excellent condition, for $39. Alternatively, try accessing their entire
used filter listing from the ACCESSORIES category on the used equipment

Paul, those are questions I have asked myself also. I have not had
the opportunity to test what appears to be a very interesting feature
on the LX: multiple flash (2) without costly accessories like the
multi-flash distributor and a bunch of cables.

If the AF400T, plugged on the body socket, is directed at the side of
the subject and the hot-shoe fit AF200T (or AF280T) directed at the
front of the subject AND both are at the SAME DISTANCE, how does
light is managed by the LX TTL metering system ?

If AF200T is on MANUAL (1/4 of power or less) for smaller fill-in,
will TTL metering compute its light before cutting the AF400T's light
?

Has anybody tried this 2-flash setting on the LX ?

Careful! If the metering is done by measuring the light

Misc. responses - 28-105, batteries, too much stuff

2002-05-17 Thread Lindamood, Mark

My 28-105 powerzoomer is so good optically I can't bring myself to sell it
in spite of owning the 24-90 and the F 24-50. How many zooms can one man
own and not be called a mere collector? It's also built better than the
28-80 PZ, which does lose its button clip. The 24-90 seems to take pictures
that have a little more sparkle, however. I'm going to do a serious
side-by-side test of these 3 zooms and my primes in the same range, and hope
to ask the DC area PDML'ers to join me to add some lenses to the lineup.

The lithium AA advantage is that it lightens the flash considerably. They
are really featherweight compared to the alkalines. On-camera flash is less
cumbersome. The MZ-s battery grip is lighter as well with the lithiums,
and it has a switch to flip to match the battery type. Don't forget to do
that!
