I used to own the Nikon SB-25 which was a better designed flash than the
AF500FTZ overall. The shoe of SB-25 was held by 4 screws, so if the shoe was
broken, the plastic shoe could be replaced in minutes. I don't remember
about the AF500FTZ as I checked it out once only. However, the reason I did
not buy the AF500FTZ was that the shoe looked rather "thin" to me. If you
compare the shoe sizes of Pentax and Nikon, you would notice that the Pentax
one is smaller and thinner. I think this is a design flaw that was inherited
from the past.

Yesterday the couple was saying their vows, and I was in the middle of

I have 4 500's. 3 have broken hot shoes, the 4th has a battery door

They're all made by Sunpak. I don't think any camera maker makes their
own flash units.

Broken shoes, fried boards, a couple of drops. The shoes seem to be
extra delicate.

Um, yes and no. They break a lot, but all the guys I talk to say *all*

They would, but only manually. ;)

I know a few Nikon shooters...when they bitch about their gear, they
bitch about the flashes. They're the weak link in any camera system.

The shoe on the 500 *is* overly delicate. I broke mine last night with
a fairly gentle flip of the bracket. It just fell right off in the

Subject: A P&S question

2002-07-06 Thread gsinos

Steve -

My advice to people having trouble with blurry pictures
from a typical p&s is to use at least ISO 400 if not 800
film. The zoom lenses on those things need all the help
they can get.

Today's ISO 400 films are as good as the 100's of only a
few years ago and the some of the 800's are not far
behind.

Think about the sunny 16 rule. In bright sunlight she's
going to be struggling even with a fast film.

I have an MI120 and keep it loaded with 800.

See you later, gs

Re: Enabled with a 500 FTZ

2002-07-06 Thread Cameron Hood

That's the problem with the big glass; it negates the use of the onboard
flash. I did try my lenses on the MZ-S, and it did not vignette even with
the 24mm f2 and hood. We also tried the 28-70 2.8 and the 85 1.4, all with
hoods, and no vignetting, at least at portrait distances. The PZ1-P,
however, is a different story; it vignettes even with the hoods off. It even
did it at the 28mm setting on the old 28-105 that was built for it.

But thanks for your comments.

Re: 400FTZ

2002-07-06 Thread Bruce Dayton

tom,

I'm curious about reliability of Pentax flash units. I have 3
AF360FGZ's and one is in the shop waiting parts - electronic problems.
Previously, my wife had broken the foot off a AF330FTZ. My old
AF500FTZ never seemed to have any problems at all.

I had heard that the new units (AF360FGZ) were made by Sunpak. They
don't feel particularly sturdy - not as sturdy as the 500FTZ. Tom,
what kind of failures are you experiencing? Physical breakdown,
electronic, etc? Are you happy with the sturdiness and reliability of
the 500FTZ?

I've been eyeing the Quantum unit but is is very heavy to use on a
bracket (44 oz).

No documents asked to the recipient? Are you sure it's Italy? :-)

At this point, I believe that different customs work different. I bought
about 200 items from outside Europe during the last few years. I usually
received goods either at Milan or Bologna customs, and be sure they work the
way I wrote in my previous email.

Again, it's different over here. Usually, I have to send tax payment in
advance (by money order) to the customs office, before they'll ship the box
to me. From time to time (but that's quite uncommon) I'm asked to pay the
postman.

Actually one of my first memories of the Pentax 6x7 is the image of a
middle aged japanese woman standing at the edge of a canal in Venice,
with *2* cameras hanging from her neck. It could have been 1983 or so, I
was a youngster then so maybe the woman wasn't tht old, but I'm sure she
wasn't taller than an average japanese female and a couple of those
beasts should have been quite heavy...

I had deliveries from the USA from both business and privates. I believe
the customs will charge 10% as Duty in US imports and 20% VAT. I never
had to send up documents to them as long as value and nature of the
delivery was declared on the box.

Delivery time was around 1 week or so. He won't escape the taxes unless
you declared the item as a gift and the value is less then 100 Euro/$ or
so. The taxes will be paid to the postman delivering the item who, BTW,
has no responsibility for the actual acquisition of the item by the

there's nobody home and he feels like it.

'World Illustrated' and 'Hotshoe International'

2002-07-06 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

the other day I picked up the 1st issue of a new magazine which may be
of interest to some people. "World Illustrated", subtitled "Our world
in photographs" covers the broad spectrum of photojournalism and
refers back to Picture Post and Life. It's quite small - slightly
smaller than National Geographic. Worth having a look at. The features
in the June issue are:

Ethnic portraits by Anwar Hussain

Classic photos from the Kobal Collection

A superb reportage portfolio by Tim Allen, a young British
photojournalist

Britain in coronation year, 1952.

A portfolio by Justin Sutclifee, a young British photojournalist who's
done a lot of work in the USA.

An essay on the Beltane fires in Edinburgh by Paul Seftel

A portfolio of sports shots from the Allsports agency

The publisher's websites:

www.photoshot.com
www.johnstonimaging.com
www.postcodepictures.com

The same publisher has also revived "Hotshoe" in the same small format
as "World Illustrated". This concentrates on contemporary photography.
Some very good stuff in there too, including the Nikon Press Awards, a
portfolio about Beaches, some of Alison Jackson's great photos, which
are paparazzo-style set-ups using celebrity look-alikes, and a lot of
fun. Book, exhibition and product reviews, articles etc.

Cheers,

Bob
