I like the Heritage Flights at airshows. I try and pan across and use a
slower shutter speed to blur out the props on an old warbird. There's a

Thanks Ralf. Our temperatures only crept above freezing this past week,
although it was a generally mild winter. However, I think plants become
acclimated to the average temperatures of their home. I've noticed that
most perennial flowers don't bloom quite as early here in the north
central US as they did when I lived near the coast in New Jersey, even
though we have had occasional winters that are as mile as those on the
coast. Perhaps the plants are programmed by the average winter temps.
But it's obvious that one warm winter -- or one abnormally cold winter
-- doesn't seem to upset the schedule as much as one might expect.

Let me apologise now to any Scots here - it's obviously in
Edinburgh (at the time of the G8 summit), which is not in England.

At least one of the other photographs shows cars driving on the

I don't think so.
If you mean the gold-digger series, I think the ones
where he seems to stand IN the hole are actually
made with him sitting down on his knees ...

All of them are really AWESOME, I like the Batman/Robin one
a lot, where the artist seems to hang on to a building wall :-)

2006-03-11 Thread John Francis

Well, let's see. The words are in English, and the second shot
of the "Make Poverty History" globe shows a double-decker bus
driving on the left hand side of the road. That pretty much says
it's going to be somewhere in England :-) Beyond that it gets a
bit harder. I wouldn't be surprised to find that not all of these
images are from the same city - maybe not even from the same country.

PUG comments, part 1

2006-03-11 Thread Tim Øsleby
First: I have been many posts behind for some time. Now I am looking at an
empty in-box. A wonderful feeling.
May I ask for a moment of list silence to let me celebrate the event? ;-)

Another way of celebrating is to comment the pugs. My favourites and almost
favourites are:

" I que es la veritat? " by Lucas Rijnders. At first glanse this did say
much. When I notice the line that stands out, it changes. A pleasant image.

" MBD " by Patrick Rendulic. I guess there are some message here. Sorry, it
does not reach me.

" Ripples " by Henk Terhell. Really like this one. The perspective is
perfect. Myself may have ruined this using a wide angle, you didn't. My only
nit is about the top. There are some ripples that just starts, that annoyes
me a bit. Cropping of tiny bit would have improved it.

" Field " by Jens Bladt. This is one of your best shots Jens. Simple and
well done.

" Dew " by Dag Thrane. The idea is good, but something is missing.
Something about the composition makes it fall apart.

" Metal Landscape " by Gianfranco Irlanda. Interesting approach on a daily
life item. Well executed.

" Gords " by Bob Sullivan. Well seen. A funny picture. I'm not convinced
about the framing. Something tells me you had other options that would have
given a better composition.

" Green Light " by Francis. Interesting use of colours. Good light.

" Pine Ball " by Sandy Hermann. Well seen. Like the background. I'm not to
happy with the centred composition.

" Anti Pattern " by Boris Liberman. I like the title.

" Webs " by Catherine Wilson. Good idea. I wish it was sharper.

" Marshal St, Scottsdale, Az " by Ann Sanfedele. One more time Ann show us
a very good eye for lines. The moon (or whatever it is) makes this little
extra.

Think I'll stop here, I feel a bit negative. More to come, I hope.

I think like you, Jack -- I think I do, anyway... it would
be my tendency had I taken
this lovely shot and I wish I had. But if I could only make
one tiny adjustment,
it would be to either crop so that little stone in front
wasn't in the picture or
blur it out... my eye keeps going there.

This would have been a good 'patterns" shot I think,
Bruce... anyway, definitely my
kinda thing.

Hi Derby

Yeah, it's impossible to use autofocus, plus the noise - although with your
daughter's friend's band, I don't think they'd notice :-) - I
just manual focus all, and I do have some trouble. (I'm going to try out the
KatzEye rangefinder prism in a couple of weeks) .

I try to control my ISO because I can adjust for darker or brighter exposure. I
found that using auto ISO many times just picks the
wrong one, although the new restraints in the menu are interesting. I let the
camera choose the aperture and shutter speed, and
hold my breath (grin). When I'm serious, I bring along a monopod, use my Leica
sometimes my LX with colour negative film.

You can see that I'm not very concerned with ultrasharp :-) but I do try to get
the eyes as sharp as possible so as to define the
person. Curiously most portraits I've seen in mags have the artists with closed
eyes, and mine are mostly the same.

herb
PS What do I have to do to get the odd foto up here? Help anybody??

Derby wrote:

it was very dark there. FA31, and manual focus (again too dark for the poor ol'
SAFOX).

I'm not to enthusiastic about the composition in this. Kind of right heavy.
On the other hand all my efforts on alternative crop ruins the qualities of
the image.
