Um ... e ... AF isn't infallible. I've had AF errors happen with
every and any lens, and every AF camera I've ever had. For best, most
accurate focusing with an SLR, nothing beats a good focusing screen,
good viewfinder optics, an eyepiece magnifier and manual focus.

... An old photography book I have says you could really
change the picture in the darkroom if you knew what you were doing.

LOL!!! You should look up Jerry Uelsmann ... He's been doing tricks
with photography since the 1950s that would astound you. LONG before
anyone even dreamed of Photoshop! And before him, Man Ray, Ansel
Adams, virtually every great photographer and printer who ever
learned how to make a print...

The whole two eye open thing, I haven't been able to do it with the

Huh? I am almost *always* two eye open with any camera and lens.
Particularly with a long lens, and particularly at sports events:
it's how you keep the camera on the subject when the subject is
moving fast in a high magnification field of view.

The FA43 is an exceptional lens. So is the FA50/1.4, but the 43
produces a sweeter rendering quality. There's no good metric for
that, you either see it or you don't. But both are good enough for
practical purposes to do anything you want ... I would choose between
any of the Pentax prime lenses for FoV, nothing else is going to be
that far different.

Thanks AlexG,
I'm quite happy with the exposure logic in K10D, it seems to get
things right most of the time. In these shots I think the low position

Darn, I thought I had curbed the haziness well enough in the contrast
settings. The wind was rather brisk and whipped up a lot of spray from
the waves. Fortunately the camera stayed dry because the wind was from
the land side, but I had several potentially nice shots ruined by it.

The colours may be a bit over the top, I pumped them up a bit to
convey the sunset feeling of the moment.

Thanks for commenting, Godfrey. It's much appreciated.

Re: PAW 2007 - 24, 24a, 24b - GDG

2007-05-27 Thread AlunFoto
I put all three beside each other on the screen, the seismograph on
the left, pillar in the middle, the one with the light on the right. I
can't recognise the other objects in that shot, but the central theme
of the other two seems to be earthquakes?

The first thing that struck me was the roughness of the walls in the
flank shots compared to the smoothness of the pillar and ceiling. Next
thing I thought was that the pillar image has a composition that
stands on its own much better than do the flanks.

After looking at it for a whike, I think there is an imbalance in the
triptych because both the flanks have compositions with points of
gravity to the left of their frames. The way the shadows fall
contributes to this end too. The flanks have light sources on the
right hand side, while the pillars are illuminated from the left. I
can't decide if I like this imbalance or not. On one hand, the skew
conveys a lability which, to me, adds to a message about what building
in quake zones must be like. On the other hand, the pillar shot
conveys strength and stability in such a way that I keep thinking the
objects other shots should have been huddled up against it in a more
symmetrical composition, builiding up around the centre image.

Maybe this tension is a strength of the trio in itself...

If the triptych is not about earthquakes, just ignore this post. :-)

Image tone and contrast settings, K10D

I ask this because i ran into a guy the other day with a K10D and a 360FGZ

He asked me If my K10D over exposes and have I heard about it.
He stated that he got from somewhere, to set image tone to bright and to set
Contrast to -2.
I tried it and didn't notice much difference.

Interested to hear all the differing opions on this matter.

I have 2 flashes, a AF360FGZ and a AF280T which I intended to use for macro

I made up a flash Bracket at work and used the pentax 5P cables to connect
everything together.
Set both flashes to manual full power only to discover that only the 280T
fired. The 360 wouldn't fire at all, hence harsh shadows.
could any one explain what is happening here?

I do know not to mix flashes with different number of contacts but with both

Re: Twin flash not working.

2007-05-27 Thread AlunFoto
This is not unique to the K10D. I tried to use a AF500-FTZ and a
AF400T simultaneously on both Z-1 and *istD, connecting as you did
with 5P cables. However, my result was the opposite; the FTZ flash
fired, but not the T.

I can't give you a good explanation of why this happens, but it seems
that the T-series (ie. analogue flashes) can't be triggered together
with digital flashes for some reason. One possibility is that the 5P
cord relays information between camera and flash in such a way that it
excludes one of the flashes from the conversation all together.
Perhaps the camera has to decide which communication protocol it has
to use. Have you tried using a 3rd party X-shoe and cable with only
the centre-contact connected? Perhaps that disables any advanced
communication exchange between flash and camera. Alternatively, you
can use a slave trigger mounted on the bracket, and connect one of the
flashes to the trigger.

He stated that he got from somewhere, to set image tone to bright

I tried it and didn't notice much difference.

Interested to hear all the differing opions on this matter.

The FA is faster (f2 vs f2.8), the DA is a Limited Macro. As far as I'm
aware the DA will not have SDM though (you simply can't make small
primes with ring-type motors, they take up too much room, micromotors
are doable but don't offer a real advantage over body-driven AF)

Who'd go for the FA for a normal, but probably would rather a 28-31 for

Re: About to pull the trigger on the FA43 Limited...... Some thoughts?

2007-05-27 Thread Fernando
Hi Alex,

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with the DA40, I'm on the
opposite side, I love that lens, I didn't think about selling that
lens even having way too many lenses covering that FL: DA18-55,
DA16-45, FA24-90, FA35, FA50/1.4 and A50/1.7 (yes, I'm a gearhead but
at least I'm no longer proud of it...), not only I like the size
factor (main reason for this lens) but also I like it's rendering
qualities and I've never experienced any focus problem.
In the end there is always a subjective factor involved in keeping a
lens, and that's why it's only you who can decide what works better
for you, right?

Anyway I would buy that da40 from you if I wouldn't have one already ;-).

The way things are shapping up, I'm pretty sure you'll end up buying
that 43 and hopefully you'll find the so called 3D effect (comming
from a guy that has an order for a 31Ltd on Henry's).

This is one of the photos that I like from the DA40, that's my wife
expressing her feelings about my excitement on the K10D purchase ;-)

Hi Boris, thanks for taking the time to respond. (same for Godfrey,

I know the equipment doesn't make the man, believe me. I'm not a
better athlete because my bike is nice, I don't lift more because the
 bar is nicely chrome-plated... etc

What bothers me about the 40 is that it's so variable. It will give me
a super-nice pic once and again, other times the pics will be slightly
off. Some sligt misfocus (this is with AF, never happens on the 50),
or slightly strange contrast, slightly faded colors. I think it's more
aperture dependent than anything else, it has to be because my
technique doesn't change shot to shot.

In my opinion, the 50 can do no wrong, and it rules for marginal
lighing. But the 43's pics have a perceptibly different quality to
them. I just can't tell if it's Photoshop (there are a gazillion
varibles if so) or the lens itself. I suspect it was much the same in
the film day. An old photography book I have says you could really
change the picture in the darkroom if you knew what you were doing.

The whole two eye open thing, I haven't been able to do it with the
digitals yet, neither with the 40 or the 50. The only camera that has
allowed comfortable two-eye shooting was the Minolta SRT-201. I don't
know what vf magnification it had, but it's a big ol' prism. The lens
was a small 43mm which should be equal to a 28 on a DSLR. I will be
playing with the kit lens in that range for a bit.

The Engineering side of me really likes Rob's answer. There are simply
too many variables to tell. And it satisfies the cheapskate side of me
 too

I guess I'll be spending a bit more time with my existing gear before
taking the plunge. It's the smartest thing to do. The 40 was the same
kind of impulse buy this is shaping up to be and so far. meh.

Bob, where have the two of you gone for the honeymoon?

 Alex

The FA is faster (f2 vs f2.8), the DA is a Limited Macro. As far as I'm
aware the DA will not have SDM though (you simply can't make small
primes with ring-type motors, they take up too much room, micromotors
are doable but don't offer a real advantage over body-driven AF)

 -Adam
Who'd go for the FA for a normal, but probably would rather a 28-31 for
 the slightly wider FoV.

I had the FA35/2 as my normal for a year and a half, it's a wonderful
lens and returned a large number of excellent photos. Worth picking
up if you want it soon, if you can find one ... these older series
lenses are getting hard to come by. Otherwise, I'd wait for one of
the DA35s or go for a DA40 if you want a lens in this range now.

Re: MTF program line on K10D 16-45

2007-05-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hmm. My standard configuration is Auto ISO constrained to within
100-400, Program with MTF line or Av mode. When in Program, I find
the camera does a remarkably good job most of the time, and when I
need a different zone of focus I use the Program Shift feature, then
return to the line with the Green button. But most of the time I want
to be in explicit control of focus zone so I'm in Av mode.

I've not had any issues with the MTF program line... seems to do the
right thing most of the time.

Solved the thing by keeping the use of MTF and ditching Auto-ISO.

I think it is perfectly acceptable, as I said, there is a subjective
factor involved, I mean, you have experienced photographers like
Godfrey and Rob ditching the 31 and the 49 respectivelly because they
didn't justify the extra price, and some ppl would consider that a
heresy, I think that shows conviction in what they look in a lens
and that's good.

Regardless, that's a very nice shot. What kind of post-processing was
 involved?
IIRC it was a bright mode jpeg (I was shooting RAW+ in my testing
period) and it probably has this sharpening action applied that is
aimed to remove the softness of the Bayern algorithm. I'm just
assuming so because that's part of my regular workflow but I'm not
completely sure. Anyway, was just to show you that with my regular
workflow I didn't feel it was a bad performer, on the contrary, it
consistently delivered great results to me.

The action is from this guy:
http://www.ephotozine.com/article/SharpenoMatic---a-digital-sharpening-technique

In summay, if I could get a 43 I wouldn't think it twice, so go for it
and post some pics!!!

Good Luck!!

Lightmeter dead?

2007-05-27 Thread Bob W
Hi,

I have 2 handheld lightmeters, a Sekonic L-608 and a Sekonic L-208
Twinmate (http://www.sekonic.com/products/products.asp?ID=2), which
uses a SPD metering cell.

I've had the Twinmate probably for about 6-7 years, and have used it a
fair bit. Just recently though it has not been giving accurate
readings, and is about 2 stops over what it should be (compared to the
in-camera meter and the L-608).

The battery is fine - I put a new one in to check the meter. I suspect
it either needs zeroing, or the SPD thing has expired in some way.

Is 6 years a reasonable lifetime for one of these? Does anyone know
how to zero one?

It's a very handy little meter, so I don't want to just throw it away
unless I have no choice.

tia,
Bob

I remember when the alternator for a Cessna 172 cost $600. Except for the FAA
inspection tag it was exactly the same alternator as in the Olds Cutlass of the
same year which cost $44. So, you guys, go ahead and believe what ever you
want.

Just remember that car prices more than doubled when they had to put the $600
worth of government mandated crap in them. You have got to have this, it is
the law, so we can charge you through the nose for it because you have no

digital lightmeter was a Minolta Autometer II and I've had that one

I'd call the Sekonic distributor and see what they'll do for you on

News from K** R**k**ll

2007-05-27 Thread P. J. Alling
*Fear not we'll still have Kenny to kick around.

*News:* *DPReview just got sold to Amazon.*

Fear not, I'm not for sale and KenRockwell.com remains a one-man
website done because I enjoy it. Everything, every photo and every
keystroke, is done by me with only one concern: is what I'm writing in
your long-term best interests for helping you make better photos?

I have to ask myself, why do I visit this site from Heck, (if it were
from Hell it would probably be more interesting), every time I see it
quoted in a forum somewhere or other. Do I really think it will improve
or am I just that much of a masochist that if I read about the sound
of fingernails on a blackboard I have to try it out...

It may be significant that ovis is Latin for sheep.

Thanks for looking, and all comments appreciated.

I like the light on the green water. Nice composition which is never
easy to do in fast moving action.

Nice shot! One recommendation I'd clone out that shiny white spot on his
breast. While it may be part of the bird, it's distracting. Less shiny
 feathers
 there would improve the photo.

 You de bird man, Christian.

Thanks, Marnie. I noticed that shiny thing just after I uploaded. I
gotta fix it before I print it.

Turn right by the store with the red dress in the window, and then take a left
at the house with the cute yellow dog. My house is the hundred and second from
that corner, there are two or three more corners in between but I am not
