The FA43 is an exceptional lens. So is the FA50/1.4, but the 43 produces a sweeter rendering quality. There's no good metric for that, you either see it or you don't. Darn, I thought I had curbed the haziness well enough in the contrast settings. The wind was rather brisk and whipped up a lot of spray from the waves. Fortunately the camera stayed dry because the wind was from the land side, but I had several potentially nice shots ruined by it. Re: PAW 2007 - 24, 24a, 24b - GDG
I put all three beside each other on the screen, the seismograph on the left, pillar in the middle, the one with the light on the right. I can't recognise the other objects in that shot, but the central theme of the other two seems to be earthquakes? The first thing that struck me was the roughness of the walls in the flank shots compared to the smoothness of the pillar and ceiling. Next thing I thought was that the pillar image has a composition that stands on its own much better than do the flanks. After looking at it for a whike, I think there is an imbalance in the triptych because both the flanks have compositions with points of gravity to the left of their frames. The way the shadows fall contributes to this end too. The flanks have light sources on the right hand side, while the pillars are illuminated from the left. I can't decide if I like this imbalance or not. On one hand, the skew conveys a lability which, to me, adds to a message about what building in quake zones must be like. On the other hand, the pillar shot conveys strength and stability in such a way that I keep thinking the objects other shots should have been huddled up against it in a more symmetrical composition, builiding up around the centre image. Maybe this tension is a strength of the trio in itself... If the triptych is not about earthquakes, just ignore this post. :-) Cheers, Jostein 2007/5/27, Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I went to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, yesterday to see the exhibit that I had seen a documentary movie of last week. Image tone and contrast settings, K10D

Twin flash not working.
I have 2 flashes, a AF360FGZ and a AF280T which I intended to use for macro work with my SMC Takumar macro 100 plus an extention tube on my K10D. I made up a flash Bracket at work and used the pentax 5P cables to connect everything together. Set both flashes to manual full power only to discover that only the 280T fired. The 360 wouldn't fire at all, hence harsh shadows. could any one explain what is happening here? I do know not to mix flashes with different number of contacts but with both flashes set to manual, figured it wouldn't make any difference. Re: Twin flash not working.
This is not unique to the K10D. I tried to use a AF500-FTZ and a AF400T simultaneously on both Z-1 and *istD, connecting as you did with 5P cables. However, my result was the opposite; the FTZ flash fired, but not the T. I can't give you a good explanation of why this happens, but it seems that the T-series (ie. analogue flashes) can't be triggered together with digital flashes for some reason. One possibility is that the 5P cord relays information between camera and flash in such a way that it excludes one of the flashes from the conversation all together. Perhaps the camera has to decide which communication protocol it has to use. Have you tried using a 3rd party X-shoe and cable with only the centre-contact connected? Perhaps that disables any advanced communication exchange between flash and camera. Alternatively, you can use a slave trigger mounted on the bracket, and connect one of the flashes to the trigger. hth, Jostein 2007/5/27, jim [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I have 2 flashes, a AF360FGZ and a AF280T which I intended to use for macro work with my SMC Takumar macro 100 plus an extention tube on my K10D. I had the FA35/2 as my normal for a year and a half, it's a wonderful lens and returned a large number of excellent photos. Worth picking up if you want it soon, if you can find one ... these older series lenses are getting hard to come by. Re: MTF program line on K10D 16-45
Hmm. My standard configuration is Auto ISO constrained to within 100-400, Program with MTF line or Av mode. When in Program, I find the camera does a remarkably good job most of the time, and when I need a different zone of focus I use the Program Shift feature, then return to the line with the Green button. But most of the time I want to be in explicit control of focus zone so I'm in Av mode. I've not had any issues with the MTF program line... seems to do the right thing most of the time. Regardless, that's a very nice shot. What kind of post-processing was involved? IIRC it was a bright mode jpeg (I was shooting RAW+ in my testing period) and it probably has this sharpening action applied that is aimed to remove the softness of the Bayern algorithm. I'm just assuming so because that's part of my regular workflow but I'm not completely sure. Anyway, was just to show you that with my regular workflow I didn't feel it was a bad performer, on the contrary, it consistently delivered great results to me. In the end there is always a subjective factor involved in keeping a lens, and that's why it's only you who can decide what works better for you, right? Anyway I would buy that da40 from you if I wouldn't have one already ;-). (same for Godfrey, Rob and Bob ;) ) I know the equipment doesn't make the man, believe me. I'm not a better athlete because my bike is nice, I don't lift more because the bar is nicely chrome-plated... etc What bothers me about the 40 is that it's so variable. It will give me a super-nice pic once and again, other times the pics will be slightly off. Some sligt misfocus (this is with AF, never happens on the 50), or slightly strange contrast, slightly faded colors. I think it's more aperture dependent than anything else, it has to be because my technique doesn't change shot to shot. In my opinion, the 50 can do no wrong, and it rules for marginal lighing. But the 43's pics have a perceptibly different quality to them. I just can't tell if it's Photoshop (there are a gazillion varibles if so) or the lens itself. I suspect it was much the same in the film day. An old photography book I have says you could really change the picture in the darkroom if you knew what you were doing. The whole two eye open thing, I haven't been able to do it with the digitals yet, neither with the 40 or the 50. The only camera that has allowed comfortable two-eye shooting was the Minolta SRT-201. I don't know what vf magnification it had, but it's a big ol' prism. The lens was a small 43mm which should be equal to a 28 on a DSLR. I will be playing with the kit lens in that range for a bit. The Engineering side of me really likes Rob's answer. There are simply too many variables to tell. And it satisfies the cheapskate side of me too I guess I'll be spending a bit more time with my existing gear before taking the plunge. It's the smartest thing to do. The 40 was the same kind of impulse buy this is shaping up to be and so far. meh. Bob, where have the two of you gone for the honeymoon? Lightmeter dead?
Hi, I have 2 handheld lightmeters, a Sekonic L-608 and a Sekonic L-208 Twinmate (http://www.sekonic.com/products/products.asp?ID=2), which uses a SPD metering cell. I've had the Twinmate probably for about 6-7 years, and have used it a fair bit. Just recently though it has not been giving accurate readings, and is about 2 stops over what it should be (compared to the in-camera meter and the L-608). The battery is fine - I put a new one in to check the meter. I suspect it either needs zeroing, or the SPD thing has expired in some way. Is 6 years a reasonable lifetime for one of these? Does anyone know how to zero one? It's a very handy little meter, so I don't want to just throw it away unless I have no choice. tia, Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

I'd call the Sekonic distributor and see what they'll do for you on service. I had my other Sekonic serviced when its calibration went wonky and they decided to do it as warranty, even though the unit was clearly years beyond the warranty period.
