Re: K20D Hot Pixels
Funny, Here's what bugs me about this entire discussion. It's been suspected that Nikon, Canon, Sony and Olympus all so some kind of pre-processing to their RAW files. So in other words RAW for them isn't really raw. It's just possible that all CMOS chips exhibit this kind of behavior, in fact most implementations of CCD chips may as well, especially if most manufacturers are applying some sort preprocessing before presenting the RAW data. The fact is only two testing sites observed this, one who's results are highly suspect as they fly in the face of everyone else's impressions, and another who IMHO doesn't really know how to do an unbiased test. Most other testers didn't and even gave the K20D kudos for it's fine resolution, and high ISO performance. The only people who should be inconvenienced by this would seem to me to be amateur astro-photographers, and they should probably be using glass plates anyway if they care about not getting spurious data. Re: K20D Hot Pixels
Personally, I put it to the particle vs wave nature of light. Sometimes an extra photon or two falls into a sensor's bucket... sometimes none. It's all just the quantum mechanics effects. Hey, Steve, Nice to see you again! How's it going? I think digital has allowed me to shoot more good shots, because I'm not so inhibited as I used to be - I can experiment a bit more and generally shoot at will, capturing things I'd have never wasted film on before. Turns out that some of those shots aren't so bad after all. That being said, I think my best film shots were better than my best digital shots, and maybe that's because I was inhibited and took more care with each shot, film being a relatively precious resource. I'd say overall, I think digital has improved my shooting. audible gasp from crowd cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO: Descanso Bay Shoreline
Hi. I did some lens comparisons the other day and had very impressive results with a K 85-210/4.5. At f/11 it outperformed all my other zooms (including the very fine A 70-210) and equalled all my primes excepting the K 135/2.5 And Vivitar Series 1 200/3.0 The lens is a monster with poor close-focusing ability, originally purchased cheap as a lark and as an interesting piece of Pentax history. After the fact I learned that it was reputed to be the equal of Pentax prime lenses, a remarkable acchievement in a mid-seventies zoom. I've decided to add it to my digital kit, at least for a while. Re: Question: Has digital photography improved your skills?
Steve, Digital has not improved my skill. However it has improved my results. From 2000-2003 I took about 100 rolls of film each year. Then I went digital. In 2004 I made about 3500 shots, so I didn't change my habits one bit the first year. 2005 and 2006 saw a slight increase, probably towards 4000 shots a year (most of the archive is on a disk offline at the moment). 2007 was met with K10D, and saw another increase to about 5000. This year I'm way behind schedule, though. Most of the increase can probably be ascribed to playing with mosaics (aka two-dimensional stitching). I sometimes take 20-30 tile-shots for one assembly. So how come digital improves results? Well.. I think it's because I came from positive film. I was used to thinking in five stops of tonal range. Digital is so much more forgiving, and thereby increase the number of keepers in the captured material. Re: Screwdriver
So to clarify -- you didn't get screwed? No Ann, it appears he bolted. Terrible behavior for such a stud, eh? Oh nuts. Nothing but torque, torque, torque... Okay, now we need another thread. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. But he's been stripped of all credibility. I knew the drill when I made the first pun Well, we'll just chuck this entire thread. Yes, it is getting boring. I'm going hone. You are too sharp for me. I have to admit its been a grind for me. I thought it would whet your appetite for more. We'd better stop or sparks will fly. What? You'll lose your temper? I was going to tap myself and join in, but I think my contribution would be too plane. Oh, just steel yourself go ahead. Easy for you to say. Are you sure he has the mettle for it? No. maybe he should take a durability test. What, don't you zinc I can handle it? Your lack of faith makes me sulfur with a leaden heart. Re: K10D Repair Estimate
Paul wrote: I received a repair estimate from Pentax Colorado for my K10D. I had told them that it backfocused severely with two DA* lenses, both of which work fine with my K20D. Paul, I assume you must send in the lenses as well? Maybe Pentax is just practicing backward incompatibility for their eventual merger with Microsoft. Nostalgia as a Conversation Starter
This afternoon I got a call from the lab where I dropped off the film from the wedding I shot recently, saying my proofs were ready. The trip to the lab and back took rather longer than I'd expected, because after one of the people there (uh, manager maybe? different last name than the owner) got into a major, enthusiastic geeking-out session with me after she mistook my Program Plus for a K1000 from the back (I had set it down while looking at negs). She'd recently dusted off her long-idle K1000 to shoot HIE in, having read that her Canon wouldn't be good for IR, and rediscovered what a nice and rugged little camera it was. I told her about this mailing list. The cameras I'm most likely to get comments on when I carry them are the K-series, all the more so when I do carry a K1000 and somebody notices the model number as well as the shape. All because so many people have fond memories of their old K1000, whatever they're shooting now. I wonder what body, if any, will play the same role fifteen years from now, when most folks old student camera will have been something else. Now I have to remember to take an S3 with me the next time I go in, after having described what a pleasure the mechanism on those is. And some of my EIR shots. Come to think of it, I should show her the K2 as well. -- Glenn -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
