Only for the gritty mood. We have two well attended finch feeders in out back
yard which have allowed me to shoot them any number of times. These are
probably the only two who's color I'll ever change.

Thanks for comments, Rick.

I like the soft mood lighting in all. The tower photo sky is quite nice.
"Love by the Rhine" is especially well composed.

I've noticed similar concerns while shooting red wing blackbirds & tend to

That is a very neat idea.

But running a projector bulb (typically 250-350 watts) for 12 hours a
day for 7 days during the printing process is *not* environmentally
sensitive. :-)

Hey, I wonder if one could wire up an inkjet printer's electronics to
solenoids in the bottom of a fertilizer spreader, then run it back and
forth in precise rows over one's grass?

OT: Free Software

2008-07-07 Thread D. Glenn Arthur Jr.
There was that recent discussion sparked partly by my asking a GIMP
question that turned into "why would anybody choose to run Linux"
and some apparent misunderstandings about the nature of and motivations
for 'free software'.

I wrote a long message about some of those misconceptions which
appears never to have made it to the list, which may be just as well
... especially since someone else has now stated one of the important
bits better than I had done.

I don't really want to re-open that thread here (though I'm certainly
willing to discuss it more off-list), but I do want to put the
following quote from a free-software author where folks who aren't
familiar with the relevant memes can see it:

Anyway, we talk a lot about Free Software. Some people
suppose it means software you don't have to pay for.
It doesn't mean that: it means software which grants
you certain freedoms. One of those is the right to
change the way it works and make that into a whole new
program, which is called "forking"; this right is often
called "the right to fork". Last week someone announced
he had forked Gnusto into a new system called Parchment,
which will let you play any of these hundreds of games
on the web with almost any modern browser. People took
what Eric and I had done and mashed it up and made
something beautiful with it. That is the power of
freedom. That is why I'm happy.

I don't think this is a controversial statement; it is simply one of
the various aspects motivating some people to seek out free software.
I present it solely for the edification of those who hadn't had reason
to know/understand this before but who had expressed curiosity as to
why some of us do choose it. I'm not saying (though some would) that
this makes all free software automatically better than any proprietary
software, just pointing out one of the factors to weigh when deciding
on a case by case basis which to use.

Yeah... it's _STILL_ going. It's been going since last night. It does
still seem to be sending files over. I remember one time I did an
"initial back-up" with PSE to my 160GB external USB drive and it took
_FOREVER_ but I was having weird problems at the time with my USB bus
dropping to USB1 so I figured that was it. maybe it's actually a
problem with PSE.

Clarity and focus issues.

I have a call into the salesman i deal with, to make sure this is
covered and who sends it in to Nikon.

My close up portrait and macro shots are wonderful. Great detail and sharpness.

My equine action shots, S^&**K. Soft, lack of detail and it looks like
it is bfing a lot. The jump i am focused on is soft, but if there is a
jump or what not behind, it will be sharp.

I have my D200 set up as was suggested by Bill Fourtnay when i met him
in 2006 at GFM.

I have left it this long, as i don't use the camera a lot and forgot
about the problem, how ever i used it at a show not long ago and when
i looked at the photos, i remembered what it gave me before.

I tried both the 70-200 and 80-200 and it looks the same, so hopfully
it just needs an adjustment. The same lenses on my D1 and D1h produce
nice, sharp photos, good detail.

Re: LR export question, or at least confirmation

2008-07-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The recommended settings for using the edit in external editor for
Photoshop are TIFF, 16bit and Prophoto RGB.

In PS, go to Color Settings, pick the "North American Prepress 2"
bundle the change the working RGB setting to ProPhoto RGB. This gives
the most seamless operation and broadest editing flexibilty.

Re: LR export question, or at least confirmation

2008-07-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
In the editing environment, there is no adjustment: LR is always
promoting all adjustment as 16bit per channel, ProPhoto RGB,
converting from whatever a particular file might contain on the fly.

In the Export dialog, you can set sRGB, Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB for
the output file.

One of the best child pictures I have seen here. Possibly _the_ best. The
"decisive moment" overcomes all of the slight technical deficiencies.

OT: Network speed?

2008-07-07 Thread Cory Waters
Some of you might have read that I was trying to build a server using
the free Ubuntu Linux system. The server was meant to be a box in my
basement that's used for file storage and back-ups. Well i think I got
it all working yesterday and started a full back-up in Photoshop
Elements 5. Then I went to watch TV. I read a book for a while. I
farted around online for a couple hours. I went to bed. I got up this
morning and it's _Still_ working... My PSE files are something like
80GB. How long should that take to transfer six feet over a 10/100 network?

With Lightroom, you can choose the colorspace for your exported images.

BTW: In Photoshop (at least CS3), "Save for Web" automatically converts
your image to sRGB colorspace. (At least, it does by default: You can
turn this option off.)

Most of the time i use LR for adjusting my photos for the web, for viewing.
On occasion i export one i really like for possible future prints.

I opened one up in PSCS2 and i get the pop up screen for colour
profile, and it looks like LR saves in sRGB.

Is this the case.

Its not a big deal as i send in my prints for labs as sRGB.

Just curious, as i don't remember ever setting up colour profiles. I
assume this is default.

I'm getting ready to start sending in prints for the Fair contest.

PESO: Something unexpected :D

2008-07-07 Thread timber
I was at a zoo-like place with my younger daughter, Édua. She loves horses
(and donkeys too... she just can't different them :D) and I think she
surprised everyone around her with this:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3041/2645706662_f9fc295c12_o.jpg
K20D, DA 12-24 <3 @ 24mm, f4, ISO 200, 1/2500

Even the donkey seems to be surprised! :D

Cheers,
Timber

Re: GESO - 600mm collection

2008-07-07 Thread AlunFoto
Thanks Jack.
The lens performs very well indeed for this type of shots.
It has the lowest resolution (as in MTF) of any lens I've ever used,
but the contrast and rendering makes portrait shots like these come
out so nicely.

Re: GESO - 600mm collection

2008-07-07 Thread AlunFoto
That's seaweed. Patching material for the nest. But from looking at
the colony on the boat trip, it seems the gannets are not very choosy
about nest building material. They seem to have a fancy for orange and
blue bits of nylon rope.

I know there's a British lady who's done well for herself
photographing seabirds trapped in manmade debris; plastic bags in
particular. I was looking for that in particular, but couldn't see
anything that would be harmful to the birds unless swallowed...

If only.

I've been waiting for this lens since it was announced. I still need to
decide between it and the Sigma 100-300 f4, but I couldn't bring myself
to buy the Sigma without comparing it to this lens.

Soon. Soon.
