Good Morning PDML: A Sweetie & a Question

2008-07-21 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

Just thought you might like to start your day with a little sweetie ;-)

I tried my hand at a little concert shooting at a street fair yesterday. In
both looks & talent she was lovely as well as very energetic--quite fun to
listen to and watch.

However, how does the skin tone look to you folks? I had a lot of orange in
the skin & had to desaturate to -21 in Lightroom. Does the skin tone look
ok? Has anyone had any problems with overly orange-looking skin? It was
really humid yesterday & as you can see she's quite sweaty. Might that be a
factor somehow?

Large

I have about 6 pics of her. If you'd like to see more, let me know. She's
really cute. I can post a slideshow.

Cheers, Christine

Re: Good Morning PDML: A Sweetie & a Question

2008-07-21 Thread AlunFoto
It looks OK on my work screen, which is not calibrated. The skin does
look a bit hectic as it should be, I think.

Reminds me of Aqua's vocalist, to the extent that I know I will have
trouble getting "barbie girl" out of my head for a while... :-(

Re: Pentax pro service in Europe?

2008-07-21 Thread Thibouille
Last time I had to have a repair in Belgium, I droped it at Pentax
Belgium (it speeds up things a little bit) and got it back in 1.5-2
weeks.
Nothing more, I'm sure. But it was a body repair (ist-d) and not a
lens repair. Lens repair might be trickier.

AFAIK ther's no Pro Service from Pentax (yet) in Europe. But they set
it up in the US and probably will expand to Europe when the US part
will be fully working and little problems solved.

Nice shot. You do have an eye for this. I can't decide about the skin
tones. If you hadn't mentioned it, I might not have paid much
attention. I don't think it's actually unnatural.

Hi Christine,
Your rendering looks good. Nice shot. I suspect that the orange was
due to the light being filtered by the tent or reflected off some
other object. But you managed it well.

Yes. Any time you "edit" (change conversion settings in Camera Raw or

It's just another sluggish zoom for me. But, given previous discussions of
lens quality, is it my imagination or is the top right corner of this picture

Corner sharpness is terrible. The EXIF says it was shot at 17mm at f/7.1, so I
doubt if it's
going to get any better by stopping down more.
The bottom left seems particularly bad. Does it get better at longer focal
lengths or does it
stay crappy?
If this is typical of this lens, it is unusable.

Bill, I don't see what you mean. The plane of focus is along the rope and the
bell-shaped thingies, and considering the difference in lighting they don't
look significantly sharper on one side or the other. The lower corners are
well behind the plane of focus, and the strings of colorful oval things stretch
diagonally away from the camera.

In short, looks okay to me.

If you look at the foliage outside the tent, the WB is a bit hot.
It's a very pleasant picture to look at, it took me several looks to figure out
all this.
If you open it in ACR and adjust the temperature -19 the tint -8, contrast to
-14 and the
saturation -16, the skin tones become closer to normal, and the background
starts to look closer
to being the right colour as well.

It could be depth of field fall off, but a 17mm lens at f7.1 should have DOF

Just to clarify, I meant top right as the image is presented, actually top left
of the properly viewed image.

At 70mm/f4 it is much worse. Can't be bothered to download any of the other
images. Most of the problem @70mm seems to be due to tester hyperexcitement.
Always thought of the Japanese as rather more phlegmatic than that.

Re: Good Morning PDML: A Sweetie & a Question

2008-07-21 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Brian, Steve, Paul, Brendan, Jostein, & William: Thanks for the
look-see. I think all of you have some good explanations: It was a street
fair, so I bet tons of folks had suntan lotion on, which might influenced
skintone. ;-) Shooting folks in vendor tents I find kind of hard--haven't
done much of it, though I'm keen to do more of it. I'd love to do a study
of streetfair vendor portraits, but Paul's probably right about light being
filtered by the tent. I also looked at the settings & as shot, my white
balance was way up--& I don't know why; setting was 8400--is that a shade
Kelvin Temp? Maybe I decided to shoot Shade because the folks were inside
tents & on stages with tents. Or if I was shooting AWB maybe it just went
nutty on me--or maybe I went nutty & nuttered a button wrongly. Oh, well,
big thanks for the look-see at my adjustments.

Cheers, Christine

P.S. Brian: glad you have access to some helpful medication ;-)

Re: PESO: Hot Air

2008-07-21 Thread D. Glenn Arthur Jr.
Rick Womer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asked:
> Neat! Where were you, and how far away was the chopper?

Short answer: I was at home and the helicopter was a mile away.

The chopper was over downtown Baltimore, MD, US, preparing to
land atop the University of Maryland Medical Center. I was
about a mile to the west of that (1.1 miles according to my
car's odometer; I haven't double-checked that with Google Maps
yet), using the telescope I borrowed from my brother (which
he describes as "a cheap, Wal-Mart scope" -- f=700mm, d=60mm,
poor correction (if any) for chromatic aberration and spherical
aberration (I got colour fringing when I tried to shoot Jupiter
and didn't have it centered), a similarly cheap "Barlow lens"
(2x teleconverter, more or less, as far as I can tell), and
using a cymbal stand with a boom instead of a tripod, because
the tripod that came with the scope doesn't work so well for
leaning out a window and looking sideways.

Just to complete the picture of the kludginess involved: the
telescope/microscop->Kmount adaptor I'm using (given to me
by a bandmate a few years ago) is sized for a _real_ telescope
... and this scope uses eyepieces that various amateur astronomy
websites describe as "occasionally found on cheaper, department
store telescopes", so instead of fitting into the receiver
tube it slides _over_ the tube and I'm holding it on with
gaffer's tape. (I'll eventually either get a cheap eyepiece
adaptor that'll fit the camera adaptor, or drill and tap holes
for set-screws in the camera adaptor.)

So, near as I can figure, that was 1400mm and f/22, on a wobbly
support.

My brother also gave me the wooden stock from a busted rifle;
I'm going to try to turn it into a grip for the scope+camera
combination to make it a little easier to use handheld than it
currently is. I plan to put two shutter switches on it: one
roughly where the rifle's trigger had been, and one up under
the telescope, so I can use whichever hand isn't fussing with
the focus knob to trip the shutter. I'm hoping that having
a big, fat, white thing on top instead of a slender, dark rifle
barrel will keep the police from mistaking the rig for a weapon
once it's completed.

In the meantime, I should get up on the roof at some point and
use the proper telescope tripod. But I haven't gotten around
to that yet.

Re: PESO: Hot Air

Glen: Truth be told, I don't really have a clear understanding of all the
mechanics you explain here (not really knowing anything about telescopes or
guns), but the details don't matter: what's impressive is your
inventiveness--good luck with whatever it is you're trying to build, but
your point about the police seems to be a wise one--don't forget it!!!

Re: Peso Two team plowing

Thanks

Top of heads unfortunatly were cut off in the shot.

I used my older push/pull 80-200 and i'm more used to the rotating
ring on the 70-200 and some times make a mistake which results in the
shot being tighter then i wanted.

Re: GESO: Marinduque

2008-07-21 Thread Bong Manayon
Hmmm...you're right!

I did my resizing uploading on a laptop and it looked fine on the LCD;
I just looked at it at a CRT and yeah... It was a grayish late
afternoon and I played around with the white balance switching it to
'cloudy' (or was it 'shade'?) and got this effect.

Oh well...

Re: GESO: She

Thanks guys! (...and Christine)..

Was doing a lot of commercial work during the last couple of months
(mostly showbiz kitsch--thank you Boris for that word), finally found
time to shoot something I was happy about.
