You say the shutter locks open - is it indeed still exposing or is
 it
just the mirror in the up position?

Is the mirror sticking to the spongy mirror-stops? Next time it
 locks
open, remove the lens and see if the mirror is still up. If so, try
carefully helping it down with your finger, see if it finishes the
 exposure.

Easy to see in a test - remove lens and film back and operate while
 observing.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips. I may try the DFA100mm next time I do this,
and maybe play with some lights. Boss said she won't take the glass out,
and since she's my boss and not really a client, I can't exactly argue with
her. ;)

In the meantime, I think I'll be saving for a DFA50 or DA35 Limited. They
seem to be much more practical than my 100.

For getting closer you might try working with extension tubes (closer
focusing) and teleconvertor.

Of course a bellows & flat field 100mm lens would most likely do the trick.

Re: Best lens for shooting flat art

2008-08-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I just finished shooting 10 pieces, acrylics and gilt!, in sizings
from 8x10 inch to 30x40. One piece behind glass ... and I was
explicitly told "Do NOT remove it from the frame!". Sheesh

On location, poor lighting and no way to change it. I brought a double
flash setup but there was no room to set it up effectively, and most
of the pieces couldn't be moved. I brought the E-1, the Oly 11-22 and
Leica 14-50 lenses. Most of the time, I found myself using the 14-50
and near 50mm (equivalent to about a 70mm for the Pentax DSLRs).

Tripod and remote release MANDATORY.

You need enough room so that there are no cast shadows and you want
something that is pretty good on rectlinear correction. Or you'll
spend a lot of time in Photoshop with the "Edit->Transform->Skew..."
tool.

Boris,

This is a really nice gallery. "It's the light" and the second beer museum

I second that. Even with the glass removed, oil paintings produce nasty

Actually, those buildings are not downtown--they're north of downtown. As
you look at the shot, downtown would be off to the right.

Actually, I"m glad you brought this up. That portrait was taken with the FA
50 1.4, a lens I like, but I would say that every once in a while I get the
oddest looking bokeh with it--tends to do a lot of little circle thingies in
the background. That portrait was shot wide open at f500, ISO 400 & was
shot inside a shady playground with a lot of bright light surrounding it. I
find it hard to shoot in that playground & I get really odd looking blown
highlights in the background sometimes. It's all got me a bit stumped.

I'm betting that the new 35/2.8 macro would be dandy, but really, any decent
lens should be OK, with a macro being the best choice.
If you can't get them out from under the glass, you are going to have to
live with iffy results.
Polarized light sources would be a good bet as well, if yu can get filters
large enough to cover your lights, otherwise do the best you can, and use a
polarizer if you absolutely have to.

Joe Dixon: I have to be honest: When I saw that subject line, I was filled
with dread; a woman just doesn't like her name mentioned in the same phrase
that includes the word dog! I thought I was about to receive a very sharp
tease or an unabashed insult. Needless to say, I was much relieved when . .
. Thanks for your kind remarks about the dog shot.

So, I photographed a 63 Galaxie, did I? I know hoot about cars. My husband
bought me a used car several years ago when I was in my late 30s. My
friends would ask, "so, what kind of car do you have?" and I'd always
respond, "A red one."

Last year I bought the 1st new car I've ever owned, a Saturn. I'm a tad
more knowledgeable about cars, but not much.

Cotty is very right.
I've shot some with glass on and didn't get satisfactory results.
The reflections are impossible to manage.
I've used single strobe with a reflector on the other side,
but indirect light from a picture window was easiest to tame.

Get it out from under the glass if you can. Use a polarizer, especially
if you can't get it out from behind the glass. Even, angled lighting
from around the periphery. Macro lens.

On film, it was the A100/2.8 Macro.
I guess the DFA100 Macro is too long for you on digital.
How about a 50 Macro?

Try and get the art out from behind the glass!!

I frequently film photographs and other artwork, on location, with
minimal prep time. By far the most important thing is to lose the glass.
I carry a Leatherman and have become an expert at removing things from
frames, and then putting them back together.

For stills, I use a 24-70 on the 1.3 crop body, focal length about 50mm
or so. Yes, it does mean standing back a bit, but not difficult. For
lighting, flash or tungsten either side so no reflections or hotspots.
Some textiles and oil paintings reflect badly and so reflected light
(bounced usually) is needed.

Did I mention that you must lose the glass? ;)

Best lens for shooting flat art

2008-08-19 Thread John Celio
I'm working on photographing some artwork for my boss, and could use a
little advice. What's the best lens (or focal length) for shooting flat
art?

The pieces are framed collages, similar in depth and texture to a very
thick oil painting. There is glass over each one, and they range from
8x10 to (best guess) 20x30, with some very odd sizes in there too.

So far I've tried my FA50 1.4 and A50 1.2 with my K10D. I seem to get
better results with the A50 (slightly sharper than the FA, and a little
less barrel distortion). I thought about using a DFA100 macro, but I'd
have to stand half a mile away to get everything in frame for some of
the larger pieces.

While I can work with the results I'm getting, I'm wondering if there
are better options out there. What lens would you use for shooting flat
art?

Thanks,
John

Thank you for kind words who bothered to share the sentiments. It's a

had started it and even though I'll do as much as my little contribution
can change I apologize if my words have offended someone on the list. I

help disoriented blind guy at the shopping mall to find its way to the

The portrait of your nephew is good, too, but the bokeh is pretty ugly.

Re: Any new info on new Pentax bodies

2008-08-19 Thread P. J. Alling
There were reliable rumors of the K20D a couple of weeks before it's
announcement. This time nothing, if Pentax has anything waiting in the
wings they hired the, (former), KGB to handle security, (their motto
should have been "three can keep a secret of two are dead"). I was
expecting a K5D or K30D announcement along with a K1000D to slot in
below the K200D but I expect to see lenses only, there are quite a few
announced but not released yet.

I've heard of a K2000D as a possibility, but nothing at the higher
end. The K10D and K20D are excellent bodies and nice upgrades over the

Any announcements will come in the next few weeks as the leadup to

This one's all but announced. We've seen the body and the sensor, just

probable, Panasonic hasn't had any success in the SLR market. The L1
was nice but weird, the L10 was an overpriced cut down E-510. M43 is
where they really want to be.

I don't see this happening. But if it did, it would be good for both
(Canon gets a better premier lens line, Leica gets a decent digital
solution). I don't see Leica dropping Panasonic though, just both
dropping the 4/3rds SLR business in favour of the M43 compacts and
P&S's.

Any Pentax Rumours? I've heard rumours of a below-the-K200D model.
Which doesn't make sense to me, K200D needs a major price drop to be
competitive an even more cut down body wouldn't be marketable today,
it's telling that almost every local Pentax shooter I know is shooting
a K10D or earlier. Pentax blew the pricing on both the K20D and the
K200D, with the latter being vastly overpriced (Canon has done the
same with the new Rebel XS, which is at least $200 more than it's
worth).

I'm feeling a bit wistful these days - summer is nearly over and it
feels almost as if it never came to Toronto. Lots of rain -
record-setting rain in fact - and no heat wave yet. I know lots of
people hate heat waves, but to me they're what summer's about. Like
blizzards in winter, I guess, they're what define the season to me.
The dog-days of August and all...

Anyway, your post and photo kind of sum up how I'm feeling right now.
The waters look choppy and the sky looks vaguely threatening, it looks
kind of cool on that beach.

Kind of like Toronto's summer this year.

Wonderful photo of your nephew!

hi Jostein,

just found about this programme, gpsbabel. convert from/to any gps
format. i believe they have windows versions too. i downloaded the
linux command line version and does a good job of converting gpx files
to google earth kml files.

this is the same programme which the gpsvisualizer uses as its
backend...

I like the scene, Rick, but the intensely burned out moon splotch in
the heavens doesn't make it for me. It looks like a fireball on its
way to disturb this peaceful tranquility.

This is one of those pictures that HDR or the compositing of two
appropriate exposures was made for.

I know nothing of rumors and don't go hunting for them.

I am expecting, based on the recent announcement with Olympus, that
Panasonic will debut a new camera built to the microFourThirds
specification. I'm looking forward to seeing what they produce on this
development of the FourThirds specification. To me, this could be the
most interesting new development in digital cameras in several years.

In a couple of discussions both with the local rep and with other
connections who are close to Leica executive management, it was said
that Leica felt Panasonic was obtaining more from their collaboration
than they were getting out of it, and Leica was rather unenthusiastic
about promoting their 4/3 gear (Leica dealers have yet to be offered
the Summilux-D 25/1.4 or Vario-Elmarit-D 14-150/3.5-5.6 ASPH OIS, for
instance). And it's a pretty clear message from Leica's R system users
that they want a body comparable to the R9 that will allow them to
utilize their large investment in Leica R lenses on a body made for
them, not adapted to a different format.

So both the rep and my "friend of a friend" were of the mind that a
new direction for Leica digital SLRs was in the offing, which aligned
with my own thoughts on the matter: the question is when. It would not
surprise me to see a Leica R built on a Canon chassis, just as the
Leica R3 to R7 were built on a Minolta developed chassis, simply
because the Canon chassis die has a short enough mount register that
it can be modified easily to suit a Leica R or R/AF lens mount. And
Canon has a sensor chip fab, and chips in a variety of sizings.

Exciting times.. :-)

OT rumours (other brands)

2008-08-19 Thread Thibouille
Those are tumours uh... rumours you were warned ;)

* Canon will replace the 5D with 2 cameras:
 - 40D-like with the 5D sensor
 - higher-end, sealed body with new sensor (no, not a 1D sensor)

* Sony intriduces Alpha 900 which has you p^robably know supposedly
brings FF *with* SR.

* Panasonic pulls off of SLR (officially or not)

* Leica drops Panasonic (good idea IMO) and goes with... Canon ;)
The rumour is they might go with SLR based on Canon ones to replace
their R SLR line.

That one is funny... or interesting depends on your take on that one :p

* Nikon intros D90.

That Leica thing is interesting...

Now this is all I *know*. Don't forget the couple grains of salt ^^

We've got a bit of that problem too, but it's been very nice this summer as
well--very cool summer for a Chicago summer.

Very nice! Reminds me of Chicago Beaches actually.

Oh, yes, about 18 plus miles of public beach front, which we're quite proud
of. My home beach is Foster Beach. I grew up off of Foster Ave & it's
about 15 mins by car or a quick bus ride if the buses are quick, but they
never are in Chicago. The sandcastle shot I just posted was taken at Foster
Beach.

How the hell do you know where the Eastern Beaches are, Dave?

Actually, Christina, he's right. Toronto's Eastern Beaches (usually
just called "The Beaches" or - as the locals down there call it - The
Beach) are a huge natural sand beach running for several kilometres
from the Scarborough Bluffs to Ashbridges Bay east of downtown.

Sadly, the water's often not fit for swimming due to high e-coli
counts. Since this summer's been quite cool (we really haven't had a
heatwave yet) there are been very few "red flag" (no swimming) days.

There's a beautiful boardwalk (yesterday's pic of the dog gazing at
the ice cream cone was taken on it) that runs most of the length of
the Beaches.
