Don't know if said combination rises to the level of "artsy", however. If it
does it for you, what else really matters.

My 67 has the non-metered prism, so I need an external meter. I use a
Pentax K10D :) I just set the DSLR sensitivity to the ISO setting of the
film I'm using, fit a lens with the approximate angle of view I need and
bracket shots until I get one that looks right (no highlight/shadow

Re: Spotmeter - which one to buy?

2008-08-28 Thread Gasha

After digging into list archives, i found 2 years old thread with
similar subject.
These old Pentax spotmeters look little bit bulky :D

So i have to find sweet spot between functionality, price and size.
Anything beyound of size like box of cigarettes is too much.
It is nice, if you can pack all "photo" stuff into one bag.

Actually mountain and nature photography is easy with Pentax 645.
Metering is perfect.
But my set is 4+ kilograms, with 3 lenses :(

Gasha, back to Google and eBay...

Re: Spotmeter - which one to buy?

2008-08-28 Thread Brendan MacRae
I totally agree. That was why I went with a meter that
combined both. My first experiences with hand held
meters, all incident, was in film school. Back then I
used the Sekonic Studio Deluxe analog model, a great
little meter. Later I got the Minolta IV-F digital
which made things go a bit faster.

When I was shooting with a 6x7, I used both a spotmeter and incident
meter. Actually, I used the incident meter most often. You really
need both. When the light on the subject is the same as where you're
standing, the incident meter is best. When it varies or when you have
to quantify a highlight or shadow, the spotmeter is best.

I found an old Soligor spotmeter at the thrift store
the other day. It was in ok condition, but I didn't
buy it since I didn't have a 9v battery to test it.
They only wanted $15 for it so they can be had cheaply
if you look around. More likely though you'll be
paying 50-100 dollars for one depending on condition.

I have the Sekonic L-758DR and it's a great spot
meter. It's also a great incident meter but it's very
pricey. I wouldn't recommend it if spot metering is
all you're looking for. Try an older Pentax. These can
be had for much less and they have legendary
reliability.

The Pentax spotmeter has an excellent reputation and is only a

PESO - Wattle Grove

2008-08-28 Thread David Savage
G'day All,

While visiting the town of Dwellingup on the weekend I spied this
large stand of wattle trees down a side street & had to investigate
(~340kb)

K20D, DA 10-17mm Fisheye @ 10mm 1/160 @ f4.5, ISO 100

Here is a close up of the flowers (~250kb)

K20D, DA 10-17mm Fisheye @ 17mm 1/100 @ f4.5, ISO 100

For those of you familiar with the Monty Python "Bruce" sketch, this
is the plant that you can stick in a bottle or hold in your hand.

Spring is on it's way.

It's a smart *phone*. I browse the web and listen to music at the same
time with the iPod Touch, which runs the same software. That's good
enough for me. The day I need to multitask with a phone is probably
when I smash the freekin' thing and turn off the service.

Exactly. I'm still bunging with the Treo650 and it works adequately
for what I want a telephone for, but then I really don't use a
telephone all that much. The iPod Touch actually saves me money on my
phone bill because I don't use the damn phone for net connection ...

But ... What does this have to do with some enterprising individuals
using their Pentax to make photographs of the Earth from ultra high

On ebay I've seen them go fro between $600 US and $1100 US. Too rich
for my blood I'm afraid, though the A version usually goes for a couple
hundred dollars more on average. Weather it's worth the price to you
really depends on how much you want one.

Spotmeter - which one to buy?

2008-08-28 Thread Cirvis
Hi all,

recently i managed to make my own battery pack for Pentax 6x7.
Thanks for help from list, and good web resources.

Im going very soon to do some walks and climbs in Italian/Swiss Alps,
and i seriously consider to give a chance to 6x7.

Then i need some external meter. I can gen one from eBay or KEH cheap.
Any recomendations?
Gossen, Pentax, Sekonic?

It must be reliable piece of equipment, well built like 6x7 and
bells/whistles are not needed.
At least now :)

Never had my Pentax wet cleaned, but the D1 and D2h have been done.

Re: OT - Bank Password Pants :)

LOL

Reminds me of my interlude as a IT manager for a local college, ten
yars ago. Some students were notorious for forgetting passwords. I
adopted a certain routine for assigning new passwords as follows:

1. Their first two new passwords were handed out discretely. Everyone
can have a lapse sometimes.
2. Their third new password would be "distracted", announced before the class.
3. Their fourth new password would be "forgetful", announced before
the class and written on the blackboard.
4. Their fifth new password would be "demented", announced before the
class and written on the blackboard. Twice within half an hour.

A cheaper way would be ebay and a jailbreak.

My first gen iphone went to my son. I paid 30GBP for a well-resourced
unlocking software and that now runs on Vodafone UK. 720 bucks seems
very steep for the country as a whole.

With a suitable bar mount, it would make navigation on your bike a dream 8-D

Good point. I don't have Instant Messenger so don't know how awkward
that might be. I can, however, listen to music while doing other things,
eg the iPod function works while (say) browsing the internet, collecting
my email, navigating by GPS etc. So perhaps to say that it cannot
multitask whatsoever is inaccurate.

My point would be that it works brilliantly for me. It is a small
portable device that works in support of my main computer - there are
lots of things I wouldn't want to do on it. But as a thing I can pull
out of my pocket and either collect or retrieve data - as well as being
a phone - I personally have never experienced anything as good. Treos,
