External power source for K10D/K20D, anyone?

2008-09-09 Thread AlunFoto
Gang,

I've recently dabbled into night photography with exposure times
longer that 30s, using the "B" setting. Whenever I lock the shutter
open, I start worrying about the batteries running out of juice.

So I have a couple of questions that I hope someone in this
enlightened forum knows the answer to:

1. How long exposures can one hope to get from a fully charged battery
for either K10D or K20D (I own both)?

2. With the vertical grip attached, will the camera switch from one
battery to the other during exposure if needed?

3. Has anyone made a DIY external power source for their camera, or
have any web pointers?

Thanks,
Jostein

In my experience with the K10D 3-5 exposures of around 20 min each (in
camera noise reduction disabled on the K10D). The difference in range
is because I use cheap 3rd party spare batteries & they don't seem to
last as long.

I haven't tried any really long exposures with the K20D due to the
fact that you can't turn off NR.

Yes.

Not I. But I'm sure someone has. :-)

The AC adaptor, D-AC50, plus a 12V battery and inverter would cover most needs.
This one needs a separate battery http://www.toolbank.com/p/POL37901 but you
can buy them as one-piece units. Maybe a separate one would be better, as you
could tailor the size of battery to the distance needed to carry it.

dismissed too quickly.

Actually the image is also a useful test of monitor calibration. I had

Mac, PC, and portable external drive

2008-09-09 Thread Rick Womer
Okay, computer guys, I have a question:

I have
- an iMac (G5 PPC) at home, on which I do most of my photo work;
- an HP laptop (running XP) for work, on which I would like to do photo work
while traveling;
- a 250 GB portable external hard drive, which has been connected to the Mac as
a backup drive.

My Winblows machine does not acknowledge the external drive's existence.

Is there a way to have read/write access to the external drive from both the
Mac and the PC? (not at the same time, of course...)

Cheers,

Rick

Does it not even acknowledge that you've connected the device, or can it
not read the drive? If it doesn't even see that you've plugged it in,
you might need a driver, but I'm guessing this isn't the problem.

> Is there a way to have read/write access to the external drive from

It sounds like your drive may be formatted with a file system that
windows doesn't recognize. Probably your best bet would be to get
everything off that drive (dump it onto your Mac) and then repartition
the external drive with one of those horrible file systems that Windoze
can actually read, like FAT32 or NTFS. Your Mac can read either of
those. The drive manufacturer's web site probably has specifics.

Y-Strap or other two camera strap???

2008-09-09 Thread Paul Stenquist
I've been looking for a better way to carry two cameras at an event.
Currently, I'm just using two Tamrac straps. But that can get awkward
when I have to switch cameras. I've seen mention of a device called a
Y-strap and some instructions for making one, but I want to buy
something. A harness style device would seem to be one answer. Does
anyone know of a commercially available two-camera support rig?

RE: Y-Strap or other two camera strap???

2008-09-09 Thread Bob W
I use a thin (1") Domke strap on each camera. Being blessed with 2
shoulders, each being more than 1" wide and approximately parallel
with the ground, that's where I carry the cameras. When I want to use
one of the cameras I transfer it to my neck, which lies conveniently
at about the midpoint between my shoulders.

It's as if somehow we were intelligently designed to carry 2 cameras.

Harnesses and Y-straps sound to me like product manufacturers' overly
complex solutions.

Re: Mac, PC, and portable external drive

2008-09-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Presuming it is a USB 2 drive ... on Windows ...
-- Be sure you have the correct driver installed for it, if it needs
one.
-- Be sure your computer's USB port supplies enough power to run it or
have an external power supply for it.

Once you're sure of those two things:

Mac OS X can read and write to FAT32 volumes, which are also directly
accessible to Windows XP. The built-in Windows XP disk utility will
not format a FAT32 volume that large but Mac OS X's Disk Utility
application will.

- Copy all the data off the drive to some other location.
- Run Disk Utility (in the /Applications/Utilities folder)
- Select the drive
- Choose the "Partition" tab
- Select the file system (ms dos, IIRC) with the popup menu
- Set it for one partition
- Click the erase button and confirm it.

Once done the volume on that drive should be read/writeable on both
Mac OS X and Windows XP, presuming the two things mentioned at the top
are good.

Mac OS X can read both NTFS and FAT32, but it can only write to FAT32.
Windows XP's utilities will not format a 250G volume as FAT32, only
NTFS.

So as I wrote in my previous email, don't format the drive with
Windows ... Format it with Mac OS X's Disk Utility and you'll be
fine. :-)

When I'm carrying two cameras at an event, I have them in a shoulder
bag big enough to handle both cameras with the lenses I'm going to use

This has always been one of my favourite titles, ever since I found it
while working at the British Library 30 years ago:
http://www.cambridge.org/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521316231

I'm thrilled to discover that the author, Salaman, pays due hommage to
M. Parmentier (who else!) who wrote extensively about the delicious
tuber in his "Traité sur la culture et les usages des pommes de terre,
de la patate, et du topinambour".

Here are some wonderful quotes:

"It was during the Seven Years War that Parmentier first met the
potato"

"In spite of a decree forbidding eating the potato for fear of
contracting leprosy, Parmentier pushed to introduce it into the
Frenchman’s diet"

So how does "gray market" work outside the US?

That doesn't work for me. My shoulders are massive and round. Can't

Re: Y-Strap or other two camera strap???

2008-09-09 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks, but I can't use a shoulder bag. As I mentioned in another
post, my shoulders are like pork shoulders: big and round. Straps
slide off. I could use a belt supported bag, but that gets in my
way. I need a comfortable harness of some sort. I may have to make
one. In the meantime, I'll continue with two straps around the neck.
I am using hand grips whenl shooting. I've come to like them.

Re: Y-Strap or other two camera strap???

2008-09-09 Thread ann sanfedele
Back in the day when I could lift more than one camera and anticipated
needing quick switches between focal length or type of film
I had them both around my neck with wide and soft
straps - one camera had the strap adjusted longer than the other so the
lined up nicely one above the other
but not touching the camera bag strap was on my shoulder and the
waistband of it around my waist for support.

It was easy to go from one to the other... sometimes the lower one was
tucked into the waistband of my bag.

Don't know if this helps or not... I couldn't use Bob W's solution as
one of my shoulders is too slanty and things
always fall off it.

If you're talking about the "woman's" legs ...

It's a movie poster for Brian De Palma's 1980 film "Dressed To Kill"
with Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson and Nancy Allen.

You can see credits for "Michael ...", "Angie Dicki ..." & "Nancy
All..." in the image. Knowing the photo is from 1981, a Google search on
Angie Dickinson turned up a Wikipedia entry that indicates she appeared
in this 1980 film. Following a link to film itself led to an article
with a movie poster with those legs.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/Dressed_to_kill.jpg

Based on the plot synopsis, the legs could be Michael Caine (in drag),
Angie Dickinson or Nancy Allen.

I only recently added that particular photo to the photo essay on line...
Just couldn't pull her whole name out of my head. I've since updated the
caption to include her name

The "legs" were never in question... although I suspect they are just a

not those of the real character in Dressed to Kill - but until I linked

Re: Y-Strap or other two camera strap???

When two are needed, I've always adjusted my straps to over / under
configurations, one above the other. If I wear my photo vest, I use
the 'D' rings to attach the upper camera with the short quick release
straps that came with the vest. And let the tele hang on the bottom,
so it won't be banging up the lower camera, and to impress the
girls. :-)

On most (all?) of the pages of that site, look on the right (you might
need to scroll down) and you'll see a "box" titled "Target Practice".
If you follow that link, the page has a sample image to test your
printer and its ICC profile, and brief instructions on interpreting the
results. I need to clean and unclog my Epson 820, because I haven't
printed for a couple of months. But I'll be interested to hear about
the results anyone around here gets in trying it.

OT: VueScan color profiles?

2008-09-09 Thread Antti-Pekka Virjonen
I have upgraded to a new computer with Core 2 Quad Extreme @ 3.33GHz and
8GB of memory running Vista Ultimate x64. Previously I have been using
Silverfast but it does not work anymore for me (no support in Vista
64-bit for my scanner). Yesterday I got the VueScan Pro and have been
playing with it a little and it works fine!

Now to the question. I calibrate my monitor with Spyder3Elite. What
monitor profile should I set in VueScan? If I use the default sRGB as
VueScan monitor profile, I seem to get matching colors with the scanned
image open in Photoshop and the image in prescan or scan window in
Vuescan. Setting any other monitor profile and the matching of the
colors fail. The scans are saved as TIF with embedding ProPhotoRGB
profile and the VueScan is profiled with IT8 targets.

That means the upper limit for continuous operation is in the range of

Great to hear the camera is able to switch battery source in real

across the chest) which seems to work fairly well. A Domke F6 "Little
Bit Smaller" bag seems a good carrier for two pro-sized cameras fitted
with lenses and the casual accessory stuff.
