As the ink ages, it can dry out and prove unreliable in use. But
beyond due date, if only a few months, shouldn't be a problem.

I had a printing project today for an exhibition I've been accepted
into. Printing to 13x19 inch Velvet Fine Art ... $3.50 a sheet. First
time I've had any problems at all with the R2400. Ultimately it turned
out the Matte Black ink cartridge was failing, but it wasn't clear
what was happening and cost me something like ten sheets of paper
trying to suss it out before the cartridge went belly up and lit its
replace light.

These four prints are the most expensive four prints I've made in four
years!

time to do anything with them :-(

Here´s a memory from this summer:
http://www.foto.no/cgi-bin/bilder/vis_bilde.cgi?id=410894

The dramatic sky makes it!

What lens was on it at what focal length. That's a very dramatic
photo!

cheers,
frank

Thanks Frank, and David and Joseph.

I used K20D with DA16-50 @ 16mm, 1/90s, ISO200 and f/9.

Re: PESO: Autumn Leaf Collectors

2008-10-27 Thread Bob Sullivan
Bruce,
I don't know exactly what they are doing. This past week the
Arboretum has been host to many of these small groups. They seem to
have a teacher/parent along with a docent from the Arboretum (woman
with the net). This was the most animated group I saw.
The group lower in the frame would be good. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello Bob,

Well, I like the concept here - not sure if they are really
collecting leaves - looks more like they are playing a game or

work a bit better for me.

It is good to have a water/blood-resistant camera when you are
surrounded by 1,000 zombies all dripping fake blood. (Really corn
syrup, chocolate syrup, and food coloring - but it does make a heck
of a mess nonetheless!)

It was a very strange afternoon/evening. Fun, though!

Great stuff! But didn't you know that International Walk Like a Zombie
day was October 25? http://www.dayofthezombies.com/

It was a big deal here in Pittsburgh. (And if you don't know why
zombies are big in Pittsburgh you really aren't zombie-worthy anyway...)

I have a few of those - they are good.

Count the number of photographs and then think again about why they're called
55s.

A similar series, which predates and probably inspired 55s is the French Photo
Poche series, also issued in English as Photofile by Thames and Hudson. They are
in a black cover.

You know, I have to agree with you here. I've thought many times that
my 'visualizing' skills were slipping away, and I was just shooting
whatever caught my eye, counting on Aperture and PS to 'fix it' later.

Perhaps I should limit myself to my remaining film until it's gone.
35mm to 8 x 10. Problem with that is I can't afford to do it except
over a period of time because of the high price of processing and
printing the larger formats.

RE: Photowalking with a Digital Native

2008-10-27 Thread Bob W
>
> Now the art and tedium has shifted to post processing.
>

The art has always been in where you point the camera and when you press the
button. The tedium has always come afterwards.

I was reminded strongly of this in my RPS workshop yesterday. When I got the
first of the RPS distinctions I presented slides, which looked absolutely
beautiful projected through a Leitz Pradovitz onto a top class screen. I shot
Kodachrome because I loathed darkroom work. With Kodachrome you have to get it
right at the taking time, but you know the outcome is going to be superb.

I still loathe digital darkroom work, although it's much easier than chemical
darkroom work. But since buying a digital camera, which is almost by definition
fully automatable, I have become very slapdash at the taking time, which makes
it harder to get a high quality end result. I must relearn all my old
discipline.

Re: GESO - Pentax Optio W60 images

2008-10-27 Thread Margus Männik

Hi Brendan,

great shots!
I reviewed / tested W60 this summer and liked it pretty much. Overall
picture quality is clearly better than W30 (especially at higher ISOs),
but the lens seems not as sharp as 43WR. Damn, I still miss that "brick"...
However - I do not like the W60 body design. IMO, WP to W30 were better.
Plastic instead of metal, freaky tripod socket placement and shy flash
(tried to hide itself behind my finger all the time...).

Brendan MacRae wrote:

I promised a gallery of watch images with the new
Optio W60. These are just a few from the last two
batches.

I shoot on black paper now instead of the white. It
gives a moodier feel but my client likes it. This
camera definately has better dynamic range than the
W10. Highlights are easier to tame vs. the W10 which
is a shot-to-shot issue when working with shiny metals
and reflecting crystals. So, that and the increased
10MP resolution, the ability to focus down to 1 cm
(without the lens protruding from the camera), and a
better LCD make the camera a real winner.

All of these images are ISO 100 and handheld.

Oh yeah, and it shoots video underwater.

As it was covered here in Seattle, the 25th was the day of the

2000km) from chennai to mumbai and thence to gujarat. here is a shot
from the ride. we'd stopped to put on our rain gear as a really heavy
downpour started up. in fact there is a drop on the lens which shows in

Halloween self-portrait

2008-10-27 Thread Charles Robinson
Taken during the 4th Annual "Zombie Pub Crawl" in Minneapolis back on
the 18th.

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2008/zombie_pub_crawl/content/IMGP4606_large.html

It is good to have a water/blood-resistant camera when you are
surrounded by 1,000 zombies all dripping fake blood. (Really corn
syrup, chocolate syrup, and food coloring - but it does make a heck of
a mess nonetheless!)

It was a very strange afternoon/evening. Fun, though!

The whole family (sans the son who is off at college) is here:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2008/zombie_pub_crawl/content/IMGP4417_large.html

The odd thing was that at the gathering spot, I ran into no fewer than
4 different women all shooting Pentax. An istDL, a couple of K100Ds,
and a K10D. We were still outnumbered by the Canons and the P&S
models, but still - it was encouraging!

Indeed. Nate bought me my first dSLR, the *istD, because he saw me
deliberately not taking shots in order to conserve film. (I was out of
work at the time.)

However, the flip side is that I now have over 1,700 exposures from a
week in San Francisco to go through. Ugh. :)

Agree.

As usually, there is no complete black or white.

I think that a mixture of spontaneity with some habits acquired by thinking
before (of after) shooting may be a good compromise, specially when one applies
that habit in a unconscious way that seems...spontaneous.

I'm sure I was one of those who thought that and I think there's still
a great deal of validity to the notion. When film was a precious
commodity, one had to be more deliberate and thoughtful about the
whole process, which is a good thing. However not worrying so much
about the outcome and being more carefree about when and what to shoot
may yield a lower "keeper" rate, but there is more spontaneity and
serendipity in one's shots, which I think is just as valuable as being
more pedantic and careful.

I guess the thing is to know when to be deliberate and when to "let
go" and fire away at will. For a tyro, shooting at will is bound to
raise confidence, because out of hundreds of shots, there are few to
be a few gems, which may be all s/he needs to keep going!

I did the same thing with my youngest daughter a year ago last summer,
and she was amazing to watch! No inhibitions, no hangups, just snap
at whatever caught her eye - which was about everything. Her stuff
was very good - inspiring really, because it reminded me to get out of
a rut and just have fun. Digital is good for that.

Your nephew seems the same way: Terrific eye and having a great time.
Isn't that what photography's about?

I like all his images, but the dog portrait stands out for me. Tell
him to keep it up and above all, enjoy himself!

Tell
him to keep it up and above all, enjoy himself!

cheers,
frank

I put the images for one of my 2009 calendars up on smugmug... with a
link from there
to the cafepress page where they are for sale. it is called "VERY
PUZZLING"

http://tinyurl.com/3tn5e6

http://annsan.smugmug.com/gallery/4658820_rZLQn#403148131_PXGqy

It ain't what you might expect :-) but I'm very happy to get comments.

Now that this obsession of mine is done, I can work on my black and
white Paris stuff.

Not that I wouldn't be overjoyed if any of you wanted to buy the puzzle
calendar and
if anyone has a friend who is into this kind of stuff do pass along the
infor or get it for them

for a present :-)

Now, back to our regularly scheduled CS4 discussion
