That's nice, Walt. You know, you should send her the portrait. Six months
ago an old boyfriend found my work email and sent me a jpeg of a scanned pic
of me he'd come across while rummaging through old stuff. The pic was
taken over 20 years ago. We exchanged a few emails, caught up, and wished
each other well. It was kind of nice. Anyway, very nice portrait of a

I think I "just missed this one" insofar as I wish the two pedestrians
walking away had more separation from the subjects, but they (the
subjects) moved just after I snapped this first and only shot. Had I
the time I would have also liked to open the aperture a fair bit to
get that background a bit more OOF. Your opinion as to whether the
result is acceptable will be valued:

Re: Photos from the rosegarden Sunday

2009-05-20 Thread John Francis
Thanks, Bob.

It was close to a comedy routine getting this shot, though.
Larry, Angel and I were taking it easy after a few hours in
the sun, and almost ready to pack up and go home. Then this
fellow starts calling. Of course I don't have the 300mm with
me at the table, so I go back to the car to get it, along
with the monopod and the 1.7xAF adapter. (The car is only 20
or 30 feet away, so fetching the gear doesn't take too long).
I've just got everything put together, and am setting up to
grab a shot, when the bird flies away.
We decide to sit around and wait for a while to see if he will
come back. Eventually, though (probably after 20-30 minutes)
it's getting time for Angel to head back to his hotel (and for
me to get home to take my wife out to the Star Trek movie), so
we decide to give up for the day. I've just got everything
broken down, and the lens back in it's carry case, when our
friend decides to show up again. So I hastly put everything
back together. I did remember to set the SR focal length to
500mm, but neglected to change the ISO back to 640 from 100
(and forgot that I've now set ISO up on the second dial in Av
mode, so I left the camera in my usual hyper program mode).
I grabbed a quick couple of shots hand-held before trying to
get the camera on the monopod - one came out quite well,
even though that was 1/50 of a second with a 500mm lens,
but the pose and lighting aren't as good as the shot that
I posted. Then the bird flew off again, but fortunately
this time he stopped again just a few feet further away.

Re: CA correction on the K-7

2009-05-20 Thread Joseph McAllister
On my Optio Z10 P&S there are several functions that are / can be made
after the fact, but must be made "in camera". These are "sharpening"
"shake reduction" and a handful of "filters" and "corrections".

I would guess that CA reduction and perspective correction could /
would be done post capture, but prior to offloading the card. After
all, all the information about the taking lens is there in the
metadata. It's just a software routine with sub-routines for each lens
model that it can cover.

It would be nice if over time Pentax did run through the older lenses
CA / Distortion to update the firmware for A*, F*, FA*, then A, F, and
FA. And so forth. And a way to tell the camera a bit more than the
focal length. If not in camera, then perhaps the Pentax software in
computer could create a file from the corrections you would make to an
images or three from one of these older lenses to correct for CA &
Distortion, which could then be loaded into the sub-routine cue of the
camera's firmware.

Nah, I just think they're being realistic about whether they can

The "game changer" speculations have been wishful thinking for a

time. I don't think the economics of it lend any support to the idea,
though.

Although it's worth noting that Adorama actually literally says this:
"The Pentax K-7 is a game changer."

They also state: "The new flagship of the Pentax line replaces the
K20D, and although it has a similarly-sized 14.6 CMOS chip like the
K20D, this isn't a simple rebadged incremental upgrade."

The K-7 *is* what was planned as the K30D, so there won't be one.

Nah, I just think they're being realistic about whether they can sell a new
camera to every user every year. I'll be very surprised if the new camera
later this year isn't aimed to replace the K200D. I think they're going to
_try_ to keep the K-7 priced above $1000, so there's room between it and the
$500 K2000.

The "game changer" speculations have been wishful thinking for a long, long
time. I don't think the economics of it lend any support to the idea,
though.

Although it's worth noting that Adorama actually literally says this:
"The Pentax K-7 is a game changer."

To be brutally honest, the K20D is a much better camera than I am a
photographer; the number of pictures where the camera is the limiting
factor on the quality is pretty small. Having said that, I have two
gripes: It's too big and the high-ISO isn't there. Looks like the K7
gets one for two. -T

Re: K-7 composition shift question

2009-05-20 Thread John Francis

Well, I'm pretty sure it's at least 75mm in diameter :-)

Seriously, though, it depends very much on the lens. And
even then it's not necessarily a hard-and-fast boundary;
image quality generally tails off as you get to the edges.

Unfortunately it's usually the shorter focal lengths that
are most subject to image circle limitations, and those
tend to be the lenses where shift would be most useful.

8-11mm isn't a terrible lot of movement.

I wonder how difficult it would be to implement a sensor shift of that
magnitude in say a medium format digital body?

Can you imagine that? It wouldn't give you tilt control (but perhaps
that wouldn't be that hard to put in either?) but just think being
able to apply shift to any lens you put on the body?

As much as I love to shoot old buildings I would think that would be a

I shot several of this, and really, I don't like any of them. I'm not happy
with the light, I hate white backgrounds (her choice, not mine), and the
pose is kinda goofy.
The previous picture had her grabbing her hair up into a bun, so she totally
ruined her 'do just before this one. I think we were both tired, probably
should have stopped 15 minutes earlier.

Thanks for commenting

It is. Fortunately I've got a birthday present to cover some of it,
plus some money from selling older stuff, and several brownie points
left over from not buying a K20D when they came out.

But while that covers the K-7, there isn't enough credit left in the
allowance to get the 60-250 as well (especially since I've already
managed to squeeze the 16-50 and 50-135 past the audit committee).

That's OK. The new feature will make sure the sensor's *level*, but
that's not necessarily in line with the horizon unless you're shooting
a seascape. I shoot in mountains a lot and I can tell you from
experience that what's level and what *looks* level can be very
different. It's usually the latter that I want :)

So far I've seen people who think the camera is underwhelming,

this means Pentax are doing it right - it's better this way than

Sure, there are a handful of minor upgrades that could be handy

That is kind of cool sounding.

Even cooler is the capability to use the shake-reduction activators

No more tilted horizons!

It may even do that automatically if it already knows what "level"

figure that being whelmed is just right. :-)

Matter of fact, I *can* afford the K-7 ... but I'm not going to buy one
now. My money would be better spent on a DA* 55 or maybe the 60-250.

I spent 18 months working with a K100Ds, first learning how to make it
work, then learning how to get the most out of it. When I finally felt
that it was holding me back in a few ways I bought a K20D. I'm only
about 3 months into the learning curve with this miracle of photographic
technology and I'm probably good for another 12-18 months before I need
to think about adding a K-7 to the kit.

I'm really excited that Pentax has produced this little wonder. It means
that my gripe about shutter noise and size/weight can be easily fixed
anytime just by getting it. But more importantly it also means that
Pentax has vitality and will less likely disappear, forcing me to have
to replace everything with Nikon gear. It will likely add more Pentax
owners to the user-base which helps us all.

I don't mind all the hoopla at all.

Ok, lets presume that it's a perfect world, because it makes the explanation
easier.

The walls of the building are perpendicular to the absolutely level ground
you are standing on.
If the sensor/film is also perpendicular to the ground, it will be parallel
to the walls of the building.
In this scenario, there will be no keystoning.
Keystoning (actually, I think this is when the building appears to be tilted
forwards due to over correction, but I'll happily misuse the term because
it's one that doesn't see the light of day often enough) arises when the
building is taller than the lens in use can capture, and so the camera must
be tilted upwards to capture the netire building. As soon as that happens,
the building will have the falling over backwards look.
The ways to correct it are: back off far enough that you get the entire
building in the picture without having to tilt the camera, and then crop out
the forground, or move the lens up or film/sensor downwards (with the camera
set up square and perpendicular to the ground) or a combination of the two
to get the entire building in the picture (generally this is a view camera
thing, rarely do shift lenses have enough movement), or take the picture
with the camera tilted upwards and correct the image during processing,
either with the transform perspective tool in Photoshop (or whatever passes
for the same thing in the software you are using) or if you are shooting
film, tilt the easel to correct the image (only works if the mage is only
slightly skewed due to depth of focus considerations).

Plausibly.

Or maybe I'm just confused, and I'm not sure I can manage ASCII art

to the sensor, and the top two floors, fifteen floors above those first
two floors, not being (in perspective) parallel, although actually in
parallel unless it's a very funky building.

I certainly can't afford it; won't be affording much until I re-obtain
gainful employ.

Still kinda glad to know it's out there.

It is a camera and lens list. We just forget about that because of how long
we have to wait for new stuff.
