I use a LaCrosse to charge my NIMH batteries (on Rob's recommendation
of many years ago), and it is very effective. I use the NIMH batteries
in my 540 flashes. However, when I was shooting with *istDs, I found
the lithiums to be a far superior solution. Much more predictable, and
with the battery grip, as may as 800 exposures. if you shoot large
jobs, they're essential.

Asunto: K-x body, anyone have any experiences to pass on?

 Hello all,

I am new on the list, having a K20 (love it!) and a couple of Limited series
lenses. My girlfriend just bought the K-x this week and I must say I am
impressed. I haven't got the chance to experience the K-7 yet, but comparing
 to
K20 the smallish K-x has notably faster and more reliable AF. Ergonomics is
 good
for my average sized male hands, everybody with smaller hands will love this
camera (those with large hands should check first). I thought glove operation
 is
impossible with K-x, but my girlfriend just today has demonstrated that it
 goes.

Only thing that surprised me is that image review after capture would last
longer than expected to show up (usually I use the RAW+ setting). I thought
 this
would be same or faster than K20 (because the K-x has smaller files and
 faster
processing) yet it takes a whole lotta more. Maybe the extra processing power
 is
eaten up by the new features which I all turned on (shadow correction,
distortion correction, lateral chromatic aberation correction). I haven't
 done
any direct comparative tests between K20 and K-x, but it seems to me that the
K-x files have a tad more dynamic range, the files are incredibly smooth and
 have very soft transitions.

This is a surprisingly featured and able camera and from my point of view the
ideal 2nd body and a perfect companion for the diminutive sized Limited
 series
lenses. I haven't played with the movie option yet, but the live-view is
maturely implemented and more usable than on K20. Very positive are the
interactive status display and the control panels display, which allow to
 make
changes on most important functions without the need to dig into menus.

For those who are worrying about the AA-batteries, worry no more! I used AA
batteries with my old Optio 33L and with Canon A640 with excellent results.
 Just
buy a good set of rechargeables with a quality brand charger and off you go.
Only thing is you have to sort your NiMHs more carefully, you shouldn't mix
different sets. You should refresh check them from time to time and if one
battery goes dead dispose the whole set of 4. I use Hahnel and Sony power.

That's it for the start, I will report more when I dig deeper into the
 camera.
Expect also to see some K-x photos on my photostream
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragra/

 cheers,
 Dragan

Really? They don't work well at all in the northern hemi. From what
I've been reading, anyway. :-)

Maybe they are better now.
I bought my istD n 2003 and by sometime in 2005 I had given up on the things
in favour of non rechargable Lithiums.
I didn't have tha patience to cycle the things through a battery charger,
continually charging set after set whether I was using them or not, and
having dead batteries after leaving them sit for a month if I forgot to
cycle a set.

They left a pretty foul taste in my mouth.

charge on the Garmin Vista HCx? I've been using regular AA Lithiums in
mine. The manual claims something like 20 hours on regular alkaline

50 hours continuous from a pair of Lithium AAs.

Doug, during my motorcycle ride in the himalayas last year, a set of
eneloops would last me something like two days of continuous riding.
that would be about 24+ hours on a single charge. take a couple
of hours off because i would normally switch it off during lunch/water
breaks etc... and this was in high/colder altitudes (15,000 ft average
altitude). i would guess it would last longer in the plains

eneloops are easier for me because, a: lithium AAs are hard to get in
india; b: i can charge the eneloops through 12v DC socket that's
connected to the motorcycle battery

I remember someone (Godfrey?) telling that he sometimes changes other

my conclusions above).

So, - would you replace any of the inks (LLK, LC, LK?) besides

Nope, they don't. I'm testing the K-x right now and Eneloops are not
better than Duracell NiMH's. First I tried Duracell 2300mAh's and wasn't
impressed at all. After some 50 or 60 shots camera blacked out. Took
Eneloops from my AF-360FGZ, charged 'em properly yesterday evening, made
some 4 or 5 test shots... and got depleted battery warning today
morning. Shortly after that camera simply switched off. Set of Panasonic
Evoia alkalines helped me out. I put the same Eneloops (and Duracells)
back to flashguns and those work fine.
Now I'm trying my third set of rechargeables - Energizer 2500mAh. I
didn't even charged em but just placed to camera as they came from
drawer. Surprisingly they work quite OK, at least camera turns on every
time. It may show red empty battery sign, but works fine and even
charges the pop-up flash.

The K-x also looks as though it might be susceptible to the small changes
in battery dimensions, and sometimes not make very good electrical contact
with a battery. Eneloops are very slightly smaller than Energisers; if you
happen to have a camera with problems maybe cleaning the contacts (and, if
possible, bending the spring slightly to make stronger contact) could help.

enclosing links that way does work with standards-compliant email
systems, but it depends on everything that handles the message being
compliant, which is often not the case

i'm using Thunderbird 3, and if i send myself a plain text email with
Content-Type: format=flowed with Cotty's exact URL, the link survives
the imposed line breaks; so assuming the list software isn't breaking
things, it should come through fine here:

http://www.swsracing.net/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dsc_0327.1.jpg

however Cotty's emails don't have format=flowed set, and in such cases
Thunderbird (and probably some other email clients) breaks the URL,
failing to comply with the standard (this is a Thunderbird bug, not an
error by Cotty)

just to point out how variable things are, despite the fact you are
using Thunderbird 2.0, which normally sets proper In-Reply-To headers,
somehow every reply you make omits such headers and thus fails to thread
properly (again, no blame here, though there may be a setting at your
end involved)

 I'll grab 446 :-)
I think it is somewhat stronger than 445 and much stronger
 than 447...

What to do with these images?

2009-11-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

I found a few shots I took in 2008 in Central California
(just north of Los Angeles).

http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2008/IMGP3960.jpg

To me they appear incomplete.
For one, I wish I had a polarizer for the sky.
I tried to tweak them a bit today, but I couldn't come up with what can
be done to make them playing.

Your suggestions are solicited.

Your URLs are both for the same shot.
But it's a good one. A bit deeper color in the sky wouldn't hurt, but
I like it as presented. I might crop out a bit of sky. A nice shot as
presented.

To me they look the same. Perhaps they are each half of a photo, which is
why they look incomplete.

A shadow of a shadow, so to speak. :-)
