The Book Arrives Downunder
G'day all Well the tracking this morning said that it was on the truck but it was after 3:30 this afternoon (Tuesday) before the FedEx man knocked on the door, book in hand. Just over a week from placing the order to receipt of the printed work. That's pretty amazing! I'm looking forward to sitting down tonight and going through it in detail but first impressions are that it is at least as good as last year - and that's high praise. The actual quality of the book production is definitely better this year. I went for the hard cover with dust jacket (the same as last year) and the binding and the fit of the dust jacket are markedly improved this time. SOmeone got called on crooked shots by a bride who wasn't very happy with her album. It's like any other "style". In small doses it's OK, but an entire album of it would be a train wreck. One thing I'd question is whether the bride looked at the photographer's previous work, and whether that work presaged what the album was going to look like. Doesn't matter what the bride thinks, she isn't the person the photographer has to make happy. Excellent! That's a beautiful bird and the framing with the flowers works really well here. I wish there was a bit more detail in the bird's plumage but black birds are a bugger to photograph. I was going though my archives on the weekend looking for something to post and came across a Black Oystercatcher on a beach. Similar situation - there just wasn't any detail in the feathers. RE: Any ideas on how to get Pentax's attention??
Thanks so much Miserere!! I think you might be pushing it a bit to make the 2 year deadline, but you never know! Stranger things have happened! Winning people's confidence is probably my main priority, as this will give me the credibility that I need to approach the big names. Anyways, you *are* already famous - you have a very successful blog that many people follow! :) I just realised too (and I can hardly believe that I did this!), that I completely forgot to mention the motivation behind Great Expectations and why I have named it such! Let's just say that I had a less than Brady Bunch upbringing and to this day, have issues because of it. It also instilled in me a fervent passion toward preventing child abuse and neglect. I am half way through a degree in Human Services right now with the goal of becoming a Child Protection Officer when all of my kids have flown the coop and my arms are to weak to hold a camera to my face (!). Anyways, I have learned in my studies a quotation that I am reminded of at least once a day: "80% of all child abuse and neglect cases are a direct result of parents having unreasonable expectations of their children That quote just hits me right in the heart. Anyways, sob story aside, I really want to do something to teach people about this. I am convinced that if people could somehow adopt that quote as their own personal mantra, they would be reminded of what to expect from their kids and so much abuse and neglect would be avoided. If I succeed in getting this book completed and published, I am going to be donating every cent of the profits to the Abused Child Trust, an organisation that I have done in depth case studies on through-out my degree, and one that, I believe, truly has the kids as their primary focus. Ok, so with all of this in mind - it is the motivation behind my book, and also, of course, the name "Great Expectations". I know that to some of you this whole thing will seem like a naïve, romantic pipe dream, but determination is something that I have no shortage of, so watch this space for in 2 years time, you will be eating your words! (well, at least I HOPE so!) Lol. and having a sponsor such as Pentax behind me would certainly add to my credibility when approaching the celebs and their agents, I reckon! t.x. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Miserere Sent: Tuesday, 27 April 2010 5:22 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Any ideas on how to get Pentax's attention?? The bad news is that John Carlson from Pentax won't be at GFM this year
...seems he's expecting his second child to be entering the world at almost exactly that time. I explained that he could bring his wife because we'll have at least one doctor in attendance who could handle the delivery, but he's staying home anyway. Go figure. Those of you who came to GFM last year will remember John as the Pentax guy who brought the pre-production K7 for us to try out, along with a pile of top-end lenses. (I suppose this means we won't have a pre-production 645D to snap away with this time...) They've made the PDML Photo Annual a "friend" on Pentax's official Facebook page (one of only 7 official friends of Pentax there) and John is going to try to get Ned Bunnell to give us a mention on his blog. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: One more storm shot
I don't often disagree with Bob and Bruce, but this time I will. I often advocate cropping, but this time I won't! The shot as it is has a sense of scale that cropping would diminish. OTOH, I think the saturation is a bit overdone, and that the sky would be more foreboding if darkened a bit and boosted in contrast. I've tried to contact them about this year's book and both addresses bounce. I get the impression there have been big layoffs at Blurb. Going through their web forum looking for answers to the "premium paper" option, I noticed that the last time one of their staff members responded to a forum question was October 2008. As a measure of how much their business has declined, consider that the time between ordering a book and the printing of that book was about two weeks last year. Re: carrying the raynox
I keep the adapter or reducing ring attached. I have a little soft pouch with a small piece of sturdy foamed plastic inside. This study plastic functions as a rear cap. The front of the raynox takes any regular lens cap (49 mm if I remember correctly) if the original cap gets lost. Any old 43 or 49 filter would function as a rear cap if you don't like the idea of a soft pouch. The included case is a very silly construction. Re: PESO: One more storm shot
This is my first "real" foray into post-processing (and still starting from JPEG). Made an adjustment layer to play with the foreground levels (blowing out the sky) and gradient mask to the horizon to bring out the the original well-exposed sky. A bit of burning in and bumped the saturation by +15. (A little too much perhaps?) Did nothing to mitigate the original ISO 400 noise, which was probably "enhanced" by the saturation bump. Will be figuring out how to start with the RAW files next... carrying the raynox
My raynox 250 arrived on Friday. My 49-43mm reducing ring had arrived a couple days previously. I did a couple of quick test shots and it seems to work just fine. The problem is that if I want to use the caps that came with it, I can't leave it on the adapter, which means that putting in on the 4 involves a lot more fiddling with things than I'd like. Also, the plastic box it came in is about the size of my 50/2.8 macro which negates a lot of the advantage of it over a second lens.
