Re: PESO - Sisters

The moment is nice. Two nits - the B&W feels quite flat to me - may
need more contrast or maybe even color - those silk dresses can be
quite beautiful. The other is the strong shadows to the side of head

rather noticeable.

There was such a compatibility issue with certain SDHC cards,
Transcend IIRC but it was resolved by cardreader firmware updates. A
certain chip was faulty in that respect. The readers couldn't be
brought back to life though. Was it all different readers or all the

Any ideas on how to get Pentax's attention??

2010-04-26 Thread Tanya Love
Hey guys and gals,

Well, I have a few projects in the midst. I am writing a series of
downloadable books aimed at the WAHM (Work At Home Mum) niche market of
website
and boutique brand owners. The books are designed to be "by a woman for
women" and are jargon, and techie speak free how-to guides as follows:

1. Basic product photography - exposure, composition, lighting etc
2. Basic photoshop skills to enhance your product photography (deep etching,
resizing, web optimizing etc)
3. How to shoot your kids (pun intended, it will be a tongue-in-cheek
guide).

Anyways, I have a ready made market with a women in business trade forum
that I am a member of, and I am also the guest speaker at an event in July
here in Brisbane which is a 3 day event that culminates with a black tie
awards night bestowing honours to women in the business community. I will
be running
a workshop that covers briefly the content in my books 1 & 2 above. The
event is hosted by the website Connect2Mums and is known as the annual
Mumpreneur
Conference. I will be using this event to launch my series of books and
the organisers and myself will be offering a 3 for 1 offer to attendees to
promote it.

Next, I also have a long-term ambition of photographing a book that I will
call "Great Expectations". It will (hopefully!) be a beautiful black and
white fine art
book featuring shots of, and quotes by high profile celebrities doing day to
day activities with their kids. Things like cooking their dinner, running
their bath,
mowing the lawn, helping with homework and instrument lessons etc. I have
given myself a 2 year goal to achieve this. There is A LOT of work here, I
need to
somehow work my way into the circles that agents frequent and become a)
known and b) respected and trusted by them. I am aiming HIGH here, the
likes of
the Jolie-Pitts and Kidman-Urbans of the world. BUT, I also want to feature
famous activists, politicians, artists and more.

So, to cut to the chase, these are all projects that will showcase me and my
photography (obviously), and the question will be raised (and answered!)
about the
equipment that I use! I foresee that Pentax could gain quite a bit of good
publicity from it all, if I succeed in my goals, and I am not in a habit of
NOT succeeding
at stuff that I try! I was thinking of somehow approaching them for
sponsorship at some level, and was wondering if any of you guys would know
the best channels
to take.

The first thing that jumps out at me immediately is with Book #1 above, I
have already begun to write about equipment to use, and as I am going to be
aiming at a
LESS than amateur audience, I am going to be keeping it at a level of point
and shoot only. All of my instructions will assume that the user has a
modern, p&s digital
camera and I will be recommending that they buy one with a hot shoe.
Remember that my "guide" will be designed not for people interested in
photography but
interested in improving the image of their brand and the shots of their
products, and they will be busy women who really don't care about why or how
things work
just that they want to know that things DO work. So, my angle will be for
them to skip over all of the jargon, and look for a camera with a hot shoe.
It is a pretty
safe bet that any digital camera on the market today that they can afford
and that has a hot shoe on it, will do more than suffice for what they need.

So, I was thinking that with this in mind, and knowing that Pentax has a
great range of award-winning point and shoots (do any have hot shoes?!?), I
was thinking
that it would be great to convince them some how to send me a couple of
cameras to play with so that I can recommend them in my workshops/books and
when
I am fielding questions from people.

I also think it would be great to promote Pentax to show the public that the
brand CAN be used to achieve Pro-level images, at a fraction of the cost of
C & N equipment.

Oh, one more thing - Mark, you might be able to help here - was thinking
that with my workshop and book #2, I will probably use PS Elements rather
than CS4 as it is
cheaper and more likely to be used by those in my target audience. Does
anyone know how I might approach Adobe about the possibility of offering it
as an accompaniement
to the books, or at the workshop itself? I expect that some attendees
(there are already 100 confirmed bookings) will not have any kind of editing
equipment/software and
will leave the conference wanting to buy!

What do you guys think? Would love to hear your feedback!

Tan. :)

Great shot. You've caught the bird's preening pose really well.

Do they have exotic birds at Newport Aquarium, because that looks like
an Australian Rainbow Lorikeet. Here's a very poor shot of several

'Gated Stones' is well composed and probably my favourite of the

Re: PESO: Another view of Yates Mill

2010-04-26 Thread John Sessoms

From: Stan Halpin

I only sporadically check into my PESO mail folder and had not seen
your previous two of this subject. Given others' comments on this, I
went back for a comparison.

I prefer this one because:
a. the mill is more clearly the reason for the photo;
b. the stream leads my eye to that main subject;
c. good dynamic range - reasonable sky, good shadow detail, but not
unnatural looking.
d. the water provides a dynamic element in a static picture.

I prefer the previous because:
a. the water here obscures the waterwheel. If I hadn't seen the

previous and hadn't been told that this was a mill, I probably never
would have thought that the shape under the water was a waterwheel.

In all other respects I prefer the angle of this shot, but the

previous did have the advantage that the wheel was recognizable as such.

Why 3 @ 1/10 for your sandwich? To expand the apparent volume of water?

stan

Partly for the water. The cascade behind the wheel, between the wheel
and the sluice, is the second 1/10 exposure. The small cascade in front
of the wheel is the third. By the time the water was cascading over the
front of the wheel, the cascade behind the wheel was almost gone.

You only get good photogenic water action for a few seconds as the wheel
is started. Inertia causes the water to overflow the buckets (?) on the
wheel before it starts turning. After that it appears very efficient
with all the water coming through the sluice riding the wheel and
discharging right at the bottom without much of a splash.

The "first" exposure is of the the walkway & shrubbery at the far right.
It's one I took before the mill was operating. It's covering up a guy in
a pair of fugly Bermuda shorts, loud T-shirt and baseball cap. I still
might have left him in if it hadn't been a Carolina baseball cap.

The mill is a joint project between NC State University and Wake County
Parks Department. It's operated as a historical education site, and the
mill pond itself, along with the accompanying wetlands upstream is
dedicated as an ecological preserve.

The current mill is a reconstruction. I don't know how much of the
original mill they were able to recover when they rebuilt it.

The original mill was restored by NCSU School of Design students back in
the 70s, but in 1996 Hurricane Fran burst a dam upstream and a wall of
water sweeping down destroyed both the dam at Yates Mill Pond and the
mill itself. The original dam was two stacked stone walls with rubble
fill in between. The new dam is reinforced concrete with the original
stacked stone facing restored to the downstream side.

They were supposed to have mill tours yesterday (Sunday Apr 25) starting
at 11:00am. But, when I got out there at 10:30am, the sign at the
entrance said there'd be only one tour at 2:00 pm.

At 2:30 the mill operator came down to talk to me, because no one had
signed up for the tour. We talked a while and he said he didn't like to
operate the mill if there was not going to be anyone to see it.

He came back around at about 3:00pm or so with a couple of docent
trainees, and I asked him if he'd start the mill just once so I could
get my water shots.

He did and I was able to.

Interestingly, the Yates family was having a family reunion at the
education center and they came down to the mill just as I was leaving. I
think they may have gotten the miller to offer them a special tour.

It was a pretty good day. I saw the first green tree snake I've ever
seen in the wild here in North Carolina. I'd seen one before down in
Texas. It was about as big around as a first grader's pencil and maybe 2
- 2-1/2 feet long. Didn't get any good photos, although I tried.

And while I was waiting for my big photographic moment I had plenty of
entertainment from the turtles & northern water snakes ... even some
little fish playing salmon where the water rushes over the rocks at the
foot of the dam.

I wasn't really equipped to get any good shots of the snakes, but I saw
where they are now & where they like to sun themselves, so I'll probably
go back there tomorrow morning with my 300 2.8. That should let me reach
out without having to get so close I disturb them.

There was such a compatibility issue with certain SDHC cards,
Transcend IIRC but it was resolved by cardreader firmware updates. A
certain chip was faulty in that respect. The readers couldn't be
brought back to life though. Was it all different readers or all the
same make & model?
Cheers
Ecke

It was several different readers, different brands.

I didn't actually get involved since by the time I heard about it they'd
already identified that the card was actually killing card readers, and
since the only reader I had at the time was the internal one in my
laptop I wasn't about to volunteer.

I was told the manufacturer recommended a vendor who were able to read
the card and recover the photos, and once that was done the manufacturer
requested the card be sent to them for "investigation".

They offered a replacement card, but didn't replace any of the damaged
readers.

carrying the raynox

2010-04-26 Thread Larry Colen

My raynox 250 arrived on Friday.

My 49-43mm reducing ring had arrived a couple days previously.

I did a couple of quick test shots and it seems to work just fine. The
problem is that if I want to use the caps that came with it, I can't
leave it on the adapter, which means that putting in on the 4 involves a
lot more fiddling with things than I'd like.

Also, the plastic box it came in is about the size of my 50/2.8 macro
which negates a lot of the advantage of it over a second lens.

How do the folks with Raynox adapters carry them?

This is my first "real" foray into post-processing (and still starting
from JPEG). Made an adjustment layer to play with the foreground
levels (blowing out the sky) and gradient mask to the horizon to bring
out the the original well-exposed sky. A bit of burning in and bumped
the saturation by +15. (A little too much perhaps?)

Did nothing to mitigate the original ISO 400 noise, which was probably
"enhanced" by the saturation bump.

Will be figuring out how to start with the RAW files next...

PDML book and Blurb link

2010-04-26 Thread Mark Roberts
So yesterday I made an attempt to see if we could offer the book with
standard and premium paper at the same time. As you probably know, it
didn't work so I switched back to standard paper. I discovered this
morning that the URL for the PDML book on the Blurb site has changed!
I'm guessing this is related to changing the paper type, though I
can't be sure.

Anyway, if you gave out the Blurb URL for the book before yesterday
it's no longer valid (it'll take you to the Blurb home page). So in
the future, please just give out my URL www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook
At least I have control over that page and I can fix the link to Blurb
if it changes again. Annoying, but if I'd *printed* any promotional
material with the old URL on it I'd be *really* furious!

I'm sure Blurb warned you numerous times about the changing URL, as
well as mentioning it assiduously in their manual :-\

Why can't you just customise your own URL? Zenfolio let you do that
for galleries and individual photos. Even if you upload different
versions of a photo, you can always give it the same URL. It's not
rocket science to implement that.

Anyway, sorry about all the (extra) hassle you're going through, Mark.
It's appreciated. And I'm sure someone will eventually buy you a beer
for it :-)

Did you get the "IOU A Beer" I sent you? You can't claim it without it!

We just had a discussion about this very thing over on ForumsNeurotica.
SOmeone got called on crooked shots by a bride who wasn't very happy with
her album.
It's like any other "style". In small doses it's OK, but an entire album of
it would be a train wreck.

One thing I'd question is whether the bride looked at the photographer's
previous work, and whether that work presaged what the album was going
to look like.

When we were hiring a wedding photographer (in 2005) about 90% of the
online portfolios were tilty. We hired a non-tilty one (paying extra
travel expenses, etc.) and thereby got non-tilty photos.

This AM I was driving along a country road lined with wild mustard and blooming

Caught a couple that will, at least, work for spring wallpaper.

You shouldn't underestimate the potential of the
Pentax-users-willing-to-jump-ship target group...although I agree that he ad
better suits ones of those news about Hoya selling the camera division rather
than the world wide availability of the flagship...

Re: carrying the raynox

2010-04-26 Thread Toine
I keep the adapter or reducing ring attached. I have a little soft
pouch with a small piece of sturdy foamed plastic inside. This study
plastic functions as a rear cap. The front of the raynox takes any
regular lens cap (49 mm if I remember correctly) if the original cap
gets lost. Any old 43 or 49 filter would function as a rear cap if you
don't like the idea of a soft pouch.
The included case is a very silly construction.

GESO - Egypt day 1

We had a great time in Egypt with several of my wife's coworkers. The
first day was in Luxor with a dawn balloon ride, followed by the Vally
of the Kings, then Karnak and Lusor temples.

More to come each day.

It's not rocket science, but it is *work*, which requires someone to
do the work (and get paid for it). Because of the success of last
year's book, I was in email contact with two Burb employees. I've
tried to contact them about this year's book and both addresses
bounce. I get the impression there have been big layoffs at Blurb.
Going through their web forum looking for answers to the "premium
paper" option, I noticed that the last time one of their staff members
responded to a forum question was October 2008.

As a measure of how much their business has declined, consider that
the time between ordering a book and the printing of that book was
about two weeks last year. The batch I ordered this year were shipped
six days after I placed the order.
