At a glance I don't think those costumes would pass for cast at our local
renfaire.

No real bodice, and the one on the right looks like she's wearing purple.

They look like SCA, not renfaire. I'm way rusty, but I'd guess 14th century or
earlier for the one on the left. I can't place the period for the one on the
right. It's been 20 years since I played in the SCA regularly.

The difference is that rennies play it during the day for the run of faire,
playing for the customers. Scadians will play year round all weekend long at an
event, playing for each other. Also Renfaire (in theory) starts right when SCA
leaves off, around 1600, and Renfaires are usually set in England, while
Scadian personas are from pretty much any place in europe

Some of the first pictures I took with my K100Dsuper were of my helm when I
cleaned it up to give it to my nephew:

Re: Lens Help

2010-06-09 Thread David Parsons
I have both the 50-200 and 55-300, and they are both great lenses for
the price. I would consider the 55-300 as an upgrade lens to the
50-200.

If you want to compare samples, these two links are my shots with each:

50-200: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alohadave/tags/smcpda50200mmf456ed/
55-300: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alohadave/tags/smcpda55300mmf458ed/

To be honest, I stopped using the 50-200 after I got the 55-300, and I
haven't used it in about a year and a half. I find that the 55-300
works great as a portrait lens, tack sharp. The only real drawback to
the 55-300 is that the minimum focus distance is four feet, not a
problem most of the time, but it can be an issue.

The only reason I might recommend the 50-200 is size. It's about half
the length and weight of the 55-300. The 55-300 is about $140 more,
but both are bargain priced, IMO, for the quality. One interesting
thing is that the 50-200 appears to be WR (plus the barrel is
redesigned from the version I have) , while the 55-300 isn't. AFAICT,
Pentax isn't offering the non-WR version anymore.

It seems a bit slower than usual today but I wouldn't class it as
excruciatingly slow. It's not really meant to be a web hosting site
(it's main purpose is online storage and synchronisation of files
between different computers) but hosting is a side benefit. Normally I
find the speed acceptable.

Thanks, Dominique and Ecke. I also consider it a "fun" image, even

I especially like the way the fawn's feet are blurred into large

Re: PESO -- Good Wives

2010-06-09 Thread P. J. Alling
Well, this was a Robin Hood themed fair, (and the local fair was none to
accurate on footwear. The general time period portrayed would then be
Medieval, the King was Richard the Lionheart (~1200 AD), though there
was plenty of anachronism to go around.with actors in Late Medieval
early renasance armor and a company of Renascence Landsknechts, parading
about. All in all about as confused about era as you'd expect an SCA
group to be. You don't have to explain the SCA to me, I used to hang
out with people who were members, I even managed to talk other people
into joining, never did myself. Too silly especially when you consider
that it was allowable to create a character from the Planet Gor, you
might as well allow characters from thePolysotechnic leage\ or the
Terran Empire.

At a glance I don't think those costumes would pass for cast at our local

No real bodice, and the one on the right looks like she's wearing purple.

They look like SCA, not renfaire. I'm way rusty, but I'd guess 14th century or
earlier for the one on the left. I can't place the period for the one on the
right. It's been 20 years since I played in the SCA regularly.

The difference is that rennies play it during the day for the run of faire,
playing for the customers. Scadians will play year round all weekend long at an

leaves off, around 1600, and Renfaires are usually set in England, while
Scadian personas are from pretty much any place in europe

Re: PESO - A Teachable Moment

2010-06-09 Thread Paul Sorenson
Brakes are OK, but you don't want to use brakes when the tail is still
up on a wheel landing (as compared to a 3-point landing) - expecially so
close to touchdown. If you look closely at this video of the landing
you'll see smoke coming from the left wheel almost immediately on
contact with the runway. I suspect the pilot inadvertently had the
brakes applied as he landed and didn't just "touch the brakes". It *is*
possible that there was a malfunction and the brakes locked up but that
seems pretty remote. In any case, he shouldn't have been on the brakes
at all in that phase of the landing sequence.

It has been very interesting to see you branch out into other genres.
It shows your versatility. I like your composition here. As you
can see, even the flying rats present some difficulties. The adults
with their dark plumage on the head/neck make it much more difficult
to bring out the eye - which would improve this shot. Lighting
becomes key here.

Keep at it and keep showing us all these new, wonderful shots of
yours!

Re: PESO - Fishy Beans

#1 is nice, but I can't help but feel the fisheye effect needs more
exaggeration - maybe even a bit closer. It just has that inbetween
feel for me - either a little more fisheye or a little less - I still
rather like it though.

#2 is pretty cool - much more abstract and not a view of the Bean
that I have seen before.

Nice work on both.

My niece Olivia, who I snapped blowing out her birthday candles above,
asked my opinion on what dSLR she should save up for. She's going to be
taking a photography course at high school in the fall semester, and
decided her P&S wouldn't do.

Completely unbiased, I of course suggested the K-x. :) Here's hoping

Footwear is hard, as are glasses. Also things vary a lot from faire to faire.
The direct descendants of the original Ren Faire tend to be a lot stricter on

I don't know which SCA you hung out with, but the one I was a member of didn't
allow personas from anything but medieval Europe, on Earth. Sure there were
people who fudged and pretended that they had returned from Asia with Marco
Polo and some such. Occasionally, folks would slip under the radar,
especially as newbies.

Then again, I've hung out at Marion Zimmer Bradley's (where the first event
was) and people may be a bit more of sticklers "in the land where time began".

Really, there have been "Tuchux" at Pennsic for a 10 maybe 15 years
now. They're a tribe described in John Norman's Gor series.

Footwear is hard, as are glasses. Also things vary a lot from faire to faire. The direct
descendants of the original Ren Faire tend to be a lot stricter on cast costumes than the
"small faires".

The general time period portrayed would then be Medieval, the King was Richard
the Lionheart (~1200 AD), though there was plenty of anachronism to go
around.with actors in Late Medieval early renasance armor and a company of
Renascence Landsknechts, parading about. All in all about as confused about
era as you'd expect an SCA group to be. You don't have to explain the SCA to
me, I used to hang out with people who were members, I even managed to talk
other people into joining, never did myself. Too silly especially when you
consider that it was allowable to create a character from the Planet Gor, you
might as well allow characters from thePolysotechnic leage\ or the Terran
Empire.

Then again, I've hung out at Marion Zimmer Bradley's (where the first event was) and
people may be a bit more of sticklers "in the land where time began". :)

But that's all just pedantic quibbling. The point of Ren Faire's, and the SCA

I've not been to Pennsic, but from everything I've heard it has grown far
beyond being an SCA event in much the same way that Burning man has grown
beyond a beach party.

Given an unlimited budget, and the free time, it would be fun to hit Pennsic,

that was my leaving present...

In fact, I've been moving stuff home all year, ever since the company was
bought out, in anticipation of this. Speeded up a bit last month when they
made it official. I've spent most of the last 3 weeks cataloguing and
polishing the loose paperclips I found in my desk drawer. I left nothing
behind but an old toothbrush, an empty Outlook file, and a bulging document
archive with a new password I typed with my eyes closed...

You could just about say the same for my *ist-D

At the moment it's the emergency backup in case my K10D misbehaves; other from
that the last time I used it was (looks in image catalog) almost a year ago.

I suspect I'm likely to buy a K-7 (or, hopefully, a K-7x) before using the *istD
again, at which point it will become even more of a paperweight than it is
today.

actually, that should read 'I would have been if _us_ lot hadn't killed all
our monks', seeing as how I'm probably of some Viking descent...

...thanks to you lot raping all our nuns.

RE: K-x pusher [PESO - Sixteen candles]

2010-06-09 Thread John Coyle
I did the same for my step-son's partner, recommended a K-x for their first
trip to Japan together. I lent them my DA50-200 to supplement the 18-55 kit
lens, and she says she loved using it. Haven't seen the photos yet,
unfortunately.

Has anyone yet regretted recommending or buying a K-x?

My niece Olivia, who I snapped blowing out her birthday candles above,
asked my opinion on what dSLR she should save up for. She's going to be
taking a photography course at high school in the fall semester, and
decided her P&S wouldn't do.

Completely unbiased, I of course suggested the K-x. :) Here's hoping
that she sees the wisdom of that choice when she's finally got her money
from her summer job in a couple of months' time.
