WTB: Hood for FA50/1.4

2010-11-28 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

Galia's FA 50/1.4 used to have rubber collapsing hood. But it seems to
be wearing out to the point where it cannot be used any longer.

Anyone having a hood (preferably metal) that they could enable me with.
I'd pay with PayPal, of course.

Collin, in the other thread mentioned a metal slide on hood - that could
be most useful as well.

Thanks.

Don't laptop batteries do the same? I'm looking at replacing the battery in my

Sure. But with 140 watt/hours, I could run the camera and your laptop
combined probably for longer than your laptop battery would run your
laptop. The point is the current - I need high current because typically
I've got the camera running, one or two radio mic receivers, an 11 watt
LED light on top and a wireless video/audio digilink to the sat-truck,
all from one battery, which weighs over 5 lbs :(

OT Le Coupe de Grey

2010-11-28 Thread David J Brooks
To day is the Grey Cup game, Canada's answer to the Super Bowl, only
better, being played in Edmonton Alberta. Game time temp is reported
to be around -10C.

Montreal and Saskatchewan are playing. The Riders lost to the Al's
last year on a last second penalty for to many men on the field.
Hopefully this year they have players that can count.;-)

Go Riders.

Dave

PS Even Chris Berman of ESPN mentions the game on his 2 minute drill.

Re: Enablement: Biting the bullet on the K1000 + 50mm f/?

2010-11-28 Thread Adam Maas
Ansel was never much of a 35mm shooter (his preferred non-LF camera
was a Hasselblad, at least late in his career). And most of his 35mm
stuff was RF-era although IIRC he did shoot some with a Nikon F late
in his career.

One thing to recall is that Ansel was pretty much at the end of his
shooting career by the time SLR's became common. He did most of his
shooting from the late 1920's through the early 1960's.

Re: OT: Epson V500

2010-11-28 Thread Adam Maas
1200dpi is low for MF work. I scan MF and LF with my Epson 4870
(predecessor to the V700) and use 2400dpi for MF and 1200 for LF
(Can't use 2400dpi for LF as it exceeds the 10,000 pixel limit on
older versions of PS). 1200dpi just doesn't give me a really usable
file from MF negs.

3200 is probably overkill even for 35mm as most flatbeds don't
actually resolve appreciably more than 2000dpi. That said, it won't
hurt anything and files remain reasonably sized.

I like it very much. Been fooling around, relearning how to scan negs.
It's been nearly 10 years since I've scanned for myself.

I've made a couple scans at 3200 dpi and the results are good enough
for me. Those scans net me a JPG file that's 5mb and equates to a
little more than 8x12 at 300dpi. There is just a hint of softness to
the scans, but nothing someone would notice unless they're pixel
 peeping.

PESO - Sunrise, November 28

2010-11-28 Thread frank theriault
I heard that yesterday's sunrise was absolutely spectacular.

I missed it.

So I went out this morning, and it (quite frankly) was rather subdued.
Still, there was a certain beauty in its subtlety, I think:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/sunrise-november-28.html

No need to comment on this one, really (although you certainly may if
you feel so compelled). Just a record of the start of the day, I
guess.

*istD, Tokina 80-200mm f2.8, Manfrotto monopod

Also went on my first "nature walk" since all the leaves and flowers
left, and since most of the fauna either hibernated or flew south.
Very quiet, very few photos, at least until I decided to put on the
macro and look for a "smaller world". Don't know if I'll show any of
them yet, but it was fun taking them.

cheers,
frank

RE: OT: Image editors, WAS: Epson V500

2010-11-28 Thread John Sessoms

From: Nick David Wright

An image editor for me doesn't have to be fancy. I'm really, honestly,
mostly happy with iPhoto.

But I've really come to like the curves control. And I miss unsharp
mask. iPhoto and Aperture only have "sharpen."

I don't usually use unsharp mask. I sharpen by creating a duplicate
layer & applying a high-pass filter. Crank the filter up until the edges
have the definition you want, then change the screen mode for the layer
to "soft light" (... hard light, multiply or screen as suits your taste).

You can do as many of these layers as you want with different levels of
sharpening and use layer masks to confine the effect to the part of the
image you want to have that level of sharpening.

Much better. The vignetting spoiled the enjoyment - for me anyway.

No. 1 is a really intriguing image - had me scratching my head for a

Fascinating. Sorry for being late replying, but it gave me the opportunity
to notice that you have produced two versions of the same gallery - with
and without the strong vignette. It seems the truth is as usual in the
middle, 'cause some of the shots benefit from the effect, and with others
the vignette is a distraction.

You sure had fun.

A question though - how did you performed the partial discoloration on
this shot:

but of one of the microphones.

I haven't quite figured out the cropping yet though. If you're curious

Wow! I had no idea how badly those places could screw up a print!
I mean, I knew they could do it. But, good Lord! I figured technology
had taken some of that capacity away from them by now.

It's a small consolation to know that, when I get my prints back and
they look like crap compared to the files I sent, it's probably not
because I don't have a clue what I'm doing when I'm editing my images.
That's something I remain willing to concede, however.

Re: Boy

Ann's correct...cropping the person on the left destroys the balance.
It shifts the boy just a little to the left of center and puts him
walking out of the frame. The uncropped version is best.

2010-11-28 Thread P. J. Alling
Best get a lens cap, IIRC the K1000 meter works just like the Spotmatic
F, it turns on when you remove the lens cap, leaving the lens cap off
while not using it drains the battery relatively quickly.

On 11/27/2010 8:43 PM, Walter Gilbert wrote:
Well, I've just returned with my new K1000 and the attached

shape, though you can tell it's been sitting for a while -- some
dustiness in the leather. I'm sure it could stand a good overall
cleaning, though I doubt the lens has been off the thing in quite some
time. The shutter speed control feels crisp and snappy, the winder
moves very smoothly, film advance feels good.

The lens didn't have either front or rear caps (and, consequently, the
battery's dead), but appears to be in good shape -- tiny nicks around
the very end of the lens casing, but no other apparent signs of wear.
The glass appears immaculate and there's no sign of oil on the
aperture blades. Unfortunately, it's dark and cold outside, so I
can't really test it under preferred lighting conditions. But, what
shots I have taken, even at maximum aperture, appear tack-sharp. I do
think I'm going to like this lens a lot!

And, if it is indeed good enough for St. Ansel, I suppose I could
learn to live with it. :-)

coincidentally, this afternoon i just picked up a ZX-M with an SMC A
50 2.0 for [price withheld to keep Walter cheerful]; mainly just
wanted the lens; on craigslist people sometimes advertise a cheap
Pentax body and don't even mention the lens, or don't specify it
exactly, and i think that turns off a lot of potential buyers, so
that's the opportunity i took, similar to yours, Walter ...

i already have an SMC M 50 1.4, which i enjoy; i am pretty good with
the green button, then guessing what adjustment to add since my k200d
is not very accurate at exposure, but it really slows me down; i'm
looking forward to just dialing in compensation and using A mode on
the A 50 2.0, even though it will be dimmer in the viewfinder

(anyone want a ZX-M, looks fairly clean, function unknown, for the
cost of shipping?)

Got this film back from Walgreens a couple weeks back. I was really
excited to see a photo I'd made of my little town's Baptist Church.

I was disappointed when the scan came back really bad:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalingprose/5106011280/

I pulled the neg out this morning to scan for myself and was happy to
find the photo much more like I'd imagined it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalingprose/5214398131/

I'm a happy camper.

Gives you the chance to experiment with the in between as well.

I think you might scan it again with a different exposure to bring the
church itself a little closer to what the drugstore got, maybe halfway
between the Walgreens image and your image.

Then sandwich the images to create a slightly more luminous foreground
without losing that brooding sky in the background.

Re: Enablement: Biting the bullet on the K1000 + 50mm f/?

2010-11-28 Thread Adam Maas
The M series were something of an uptick in Pentax's fortunes as
things had been headed downhill after the success of the early
Spotmatics. The later Spotties never sold as well as the early ones
and the K series didn't really sell any better which is why they were
replaced so quickly. But even the M's didn't stall Pentax's decline,
instead they cemented Pentax's reputation as a low-end camera company.

Remember in the mid-60's Pentax dominated the 35mm SLR world alongside
Nikon. By 1972-73 they were a much smaller player as Canon and Minolta
in particular had introduced successful modern designs. Pentax never
came close to regaining the marketshare or status they had in the
mid/late 60's.

Exactly. And the K1000 preceded the M Series by at least a few months. I was
just starting to do some race track shooting in the early seventies and Pentax
was still fairly well respected then. But when the K series was released and
was apparently nothing more than a Spotmatic F with a bayonet mount, they're
fortunes hit the skids. However, the 6x7 soon became very desirable among the
pros, even the race track shooters I hung with. It established Pentax as a top
end player in MF, but an amateur and student brand in 35mm. In some ways, that
positioning persists today.

Re: Enablement: Biting the bullet on the K1000 + 50mm f/?

2010-11-28 Thread paul stenquist
The K1000 was introduced one year after the other K variants and just a bit
before the M cameras. The K1000 was the only K series camera that continued in
production after the M intro. But Pentax had already fallen behind a bit by the
time the K series was introduced. I debated buying one but decided they were
overpriced, since they didn't really improve on the Spotmatics by any
significant degree.

The K1000 may have been a Spotmatic F with a bayonet mount but I always
felt that the others in the K series were maligned unfairly. My
favourite of the K and M series has always been the KX - it's
match-needle metering system was very intuitive - much more so than that
of the later MX. The MX is wonderful but I find it just too small.

The MX lacked the great weakness of the K line, the very unrefined
build & feel. While I'm not a big MX fan (I found it smallish,
unreliable and the viewfinder is a triumph of specifications over
utility) I'd be hard pressed to take any of the K line over a MX
without the on/off problems. I've shot with the KX and K1000 and owned
a K2. They're competent cameras but after working extensively with the
Nikon FM2n and FE2 (which are essentially the FM and FE with better
shutters, the basic design is concurrent with the K series) it's hard
to call the K series anything other than competent but unimpressive
cameras.

Of course the only Pentax 35mm bodies I've truly liked are the LX and
PZ-1p, particularly the LX.

Dave Mann from Kiwiland was in Sydney last week and we had an enjoyable
walk around Sydney Harbour for a couple of hours (so, it was a 'mini'
PDML meet up as there were just the two of us).

Here's a few shots:

Well, I've never used the Nikons so I have no basis for comparison, and
my relatively recently aquired LX remains unused (something I will
definitely redress in the new year). Having held the KX, MX and LX,
though, I still like the 'feel' of the KX over the others. Maybe I'm
just odd

I'm not sure what you mean by the "on/off problems".

Re: Now this is why I wanted my own scanner

2010-11-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
When I was shooting film and having to send it out for processing, it
darn near made me stop.
I don't know how a photographer can do Photography without control of
the process.

Two nice time-lapse videos found on the net.

I liked the last one. Great idea to move the camera between pictures.
