Nobody wears rubber, they wear Lycra. (or something very similar),
coated to look like rubber. Rubber doesn't breath and weights too much
for long term comfort, unless they're into serious S&M and that's beyond
the scope of this discussion.

You know the role 'Seven of Nine' played in getting Barach Obama elected?
She helped him become the Senator from Illinois.

He was a state/local politician who had never served in Washington DC.
He offered to run against Jack Ryan, a young Republican investment banker
(rich) who was 'retired' and teaching school in the ghetto.

Jack and 'Seven of Nine' had been married and divorced.
The divorce proceedings were sealed in court, 'for the kid's benefit',
but people kept digging. He swore before nomination that it was all good.

He had financed some minor films for 'Seven of Nine'. When the court
records came unraveled, it was reported the divorce was precipitated by Jack
taking 'Seven of Nine' on a romantic get-away to Paris...where he wanted to
do some performing with her at a live sex club. She said NO, as she had
to other such requests and filed for divorce.

Of course, this was no good for a Republican candidate for the US Senate,
not with a 'Family Values' platform and all. After about 3 weeks of pressure,
Jack resigned the nomination. No other Republican would take it, and
party leaders brought in a Black conservative radio personality to run,
Alan Keyes from New York.

Duh, the voters saw right thru that and elected Obama to the US Senate
with a landslide margin. So the unknown state politician with big
ambitions and no record to speak of became one of the top 100 elected
officials in the USA.

I like Obama, but he really out performed Jack Kennedy in his rise.
And like Kennedy, much of it was based on charisma and future versus
voting record.

Regards, Bob S.

I thought about simple meters as well partly because of price, partly
because an old style meter is more classy near a C330 than a modern
one ;)
The thing is, I need a flashmeter anyway.

Yeah,

But who remembers when WWII broke out? When the Queen Mary,
Queen Elizabeth, The Arc Royal and so many others I can't
remember for the moment, were anchored all at the same time in
the roadstead outside Cape Town harbour; and the U Boats stopped
local fishing trawlers from Hout Bay out at sea to buy fresh
fish? They used a variety of currencies that included Sterling,
US and South African. And I took pictures with a folding Kodak
from our front stoep (stoop) or verandah for the Brits which
afforded a wonderful view of Table Bay.

Well, my earliest memories are of some of the Mercury flights. I was
fascinated by them and I remember sitting in front of the TV for hours
waiting for the launch. These must have pre-dated the Kennedy
assassination since that was in late 63 and the program ended in May.
I would have just turned 5.

Again a reply that may not be of help. I was convinced my K10D was
BFing. Two trips to Pentax Canada said it was not. I sent it back for
a third visit, this time with the D FA 50 f2,8. I was having trouble
with it and the 16-45.
I recieved the camera and lens back 2 weeks later with a note saying
they "matched" camera to lens. N/C it may have still been under a
warranty but i cannot remember.

I am not 100% sure but was there not a thread about the istD cameras
going back to the original firmware and you could hack into the
adjusting process.??or was that just the K10D.??

You asked me/us earlier if you should turn the beep back on.

Up to you but i found it very helpful, especially when i did horse
shows. I found after 4-5 hours my right eye would get "lazy" so to
speak and i would have to keep blinking and moving around to get rid
of floaties that made it hard for me to confirm focus. As long as the
beep beeped i was 99% sure i was ok.

When radios came with only FM because AM was dying.
When raw hamburger was safer to eat than today. (Yes, it was so in the

When there were no national pizza chains.
Before there was a drive-thru restaurant.

You might look into Wein flashmeters for studiouse. They are plentiful
and cheap and easy to use. For on the run, you really don't need a
flashmeter for a single flash setup. I used to use the venerable
Vivitar 283 and 285s. Dial in your ASA/ISO and you have a range of
power settings that allow you to shoot anything under a given range at
a given aperture. If you are bouncing the light you will need to
compensate for the light loss, of course.

Terry and the Pirates or was it called Flying Tigers on radio.
It was a WWII radio drama on Saturday mornings.
My aunt arranged tickets to the theater one Saturday.
I was very excited, but then baffled.
We sat in a big theater and there were some guys with a mike up front.
No airplanes, no ariel dogfights. I spent the whole time confused.

I do remember when Chicago TV signed onto the air and signed off. ('49-'50)
Kukla, Fran, and Ollie - Tom Corbett, Space Cadet - Howdy Doody Time
and a ton of Lone Ranger reels.

First of all, thanks to all who looked and commented.

Second, Judy and I are in a common law relationship, so yeah, we're
married. We intend to "make it legal" sometime in the not-so-distant
future. What you see on my finger is my "common-law wedding ring".

Long story short, when we resumed co-habitation back in April after a
year apart we had wedding rings that we bought for our (undetermined)
wedding day. Then we saw rings at a store that we liked much more, so
we decided that they'd be our rings for when we have our civil
ceremony. We decided that our "old" wedding rings would now become
our "common law rings" in the interim. We had a private (as in just
the two of us) little ceremony and exchanged the rings.

Wow, those are some memories!
I remember the Korean War in the movie theater news reels.
And air raid drills where we ducked under our desks at school,

I think I'm gonna have to study up on "stopped down" vs. "open aperture." Or
maybe not. Maybe I'll just wait till it matters to me. Right now it's just

Re: PESO: Spotted Orchids

2010-12-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and for your comments, Elizabeth, Jack and Bob!

IIRC, I cropped off a bit of the flower on the right to eliminate a
bit of a sign that would otherwise mar the image. I usually take the
easy way out, and crop distractions instead of cloning them out. The
edge of the sign bothered me more that cutting of the blossom. I will
go back to the unedited file and see if I can clone out the part of
the sign that would allow me to show all of that flower.

that would be fascinating, Boris. I don't have many regrets, but one of them
is that I never visited a Soviet bloc country during the Cold War, esp.
Russia. The other is that I did not fly straight to Berlin when the wall was
coming down. It would be fascinating to have your thoughts about life there,
especially with the contrast you now have. Put them on your blog.

One of my exes is half-Russian, took her degree in Russian, and spent a year
in Leningrad, in whichever year Brezhnev bought the kolkhoz, so to speak. A
fascinating time when the threads really started to unravel.

it's largely a matter of taste. When I use the tone curve I keep an eye on
the histogram. I try to expose to the right, then in LR pull the shadows
back to the left to the point just before clipping, then move the midtones
in the appropriate direction to clear any mudiness. Remember, these are
tonal values so you're not really do whacky Velvial things with the colour,
just changing the contrast and bringing out what was in front of you when
you opened your aperture.

When the wall did come down, an advertising colleague was on her way to
Berlin. She brought back tiny pieces of the wall and was kind enough to
give me one, which I still have. She told us there had been a "run on
axe-picks," and that she did her best to acquire pieces of the wall that had
graffiti-paint; mine is about the size of a thumb nail and has a bit of blue
and silver paint on it. If I remember correctly, my colleague had a sister
living there. Cheers, Christine

I also found the K-7 a back-and-forth camera compared to the K20D. In fact I
never bought it.
Compared to the K20D, its drawbacks were the dustier and flatter look of its
pictures and the worse placement of buttons on the back, all clustered on
the right of the monitor. Worst of all, the damn LV button!

Yes, the user interface remains unchanged on the K-5 (I still like the K20D

Thanks Dan. They were taken here in Bloomfield HIlls, Michigan, at the Johnson
Nature Center. We have red squirrels and black squirrels -- no grays. When I
lived in Jersey and Chicago, we had only grays as well. The black squirrels
were originally found only on the east side of Detroit. They migrated out here
about 25 years ago. They're slightly smaller than the reds, a bit meaner, and
much more skittish. I'll post a pick of one later.

Like most control sets, I think you'll find you get used to the k5, k7 layout.
After a combined 30K frames or so, I never hit the LV button accidentally.

Cool.

I have a few fragments of this and that, one of my foibles.

I have a piece of hardened clay a few inches across that I popped into
my pocket while filming at the business end of a 5 metre diameter tunnel
being dug by a large machine 15 metres under the main runway at
Heathrow. At that depth, I was told, the surrounding material was ex-
swamp and hadn't been uncovered for 60 million years.

I also have a smaller piece of stone from a wall that was part of the
ancient Roman Portus at Fiumicino - used to be the trading centre for
ships coming into the hub of the Empire.

About 25 years ago I went down a coal mine and had a small souvenir of
coal that lived on the mantelpiece at o0ur last house for years.
Apparently it fell off one day and someone thought it had dropped from
the coal bucket, so it was flung onto the fire! Oh well...

Oh well...
