GESO: At the Coast to Coast finish line
The Coast to Coast is one of the world's greatest sporting events. Competitors start on the beach at Kumara on the west coast. They run, bike and kayak a total of 243km over a mountain range and across to finish on the beach at the eastern side of Christchurch city. And the best ones do it in well under 12 hours. Just like last year I turned up to the finish line to take a few snapshots. One of my dreams would be to take a 645D and a helicopter and follow the whole course over two days. Anyway, there's only so much variety I can get while standing at the side of the finishing chute. I hope this is interesting but it's not too much different from the ones I took last year. I'm pining for an 80-200 f/2.8 zoom. I missed a few good shots from being stuck at 200mm. I've split it into two galleries as the software preloads the large images and there are enough of them that it might take a while to load otherwise. Part 1: http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1359-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-1.html Part 2: http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1360-2011-02-13-speights-coast-to-coast-photos-2.html The photos look out of order because there are three types of competitors: two-day teams, two-day individuals and one-day individuals (the so-called Longest Day, they have red race numbers). The two-day competitors have a staggered start on the second day so you can't really tell who's placed where when they finish. I apologise for the small size of the images. I'm trying to work out the best way around this. RE: GESO: At the Coast to Coast finish line
it's asking quite a lot to post the pictures without a gallery giving an overview and a sense of how many there are. As it is you're asking people to click one after the other with no idea of how many pictures there are, and no way of telling whether the next one is interesting or not. I suspect that most people who were not involved with the event will find it too much of a struggle to plough through them all. I think you need to be more ruthless in your editing, take the point of view of the detached photographer who is more interested in a good picture then in yet another shot of some sweaty stranger crossing the finishing line. pfa 50/1.4 sharpness
Larry, other than the CA apparent on the 1.4, I got the impression that the focus is slightly near - the right side of the center rose looks sharper than the other. Or you used that border of the rose to focus. It IS softer, there are problems if we look to the 2.8 shot at the same time. Still wouldn't stop using it whenever I needed to. I usually close some when I use the m50 1.7 - unless I need it open. Later on I'll get the target or a ruler and check my cameras. Didn't do it lately. pfa 50/1.4 sharpness
Bob, I did my tests with both m50 flavors I have around, matching the apertures from f11 until both were wide open. I targeted a tiled wall, with coins taped at center and near corners. Running, between rains. Will repeat one of these days with care so I can post results. Mirror used to get things properly aligned, don't believe in great errors. Anyway, my 1.4 acted softer than the 1.7 on matching apertures. The 1.4 is older, had some fungi removed from front and rear elements but there are no stains in the coating - that may be the problem anyway. But I got the idea that the 1.7 is a little sharper - at least, mine is. There some diff in exposure - I was using manual speeds, metered from the Gossen often but not for every shot. Next time I'll get it proper. Luiz Felipe luiz.felipe at techmit.com.br http://www.techmit.com.br/luizfelipe Bob's words: It may be just me, but I'd compare the f/1.7 lens with the f/1.4 *AT* f/1.7. Re: pfa 50/1.4 sharpness
It's one thing to test a lens for suitable sharpness and focus accuracy. it's quite another thing to compare two lenses. To make an accurate comparison, you would have to test several samples of new lenses on a bullet-proof rig. To test two used lenses, one of which once had to be disassembled for fungus removal, is meaningless. Even testing just two new lenses is somewhat suspect, as there is always some sample variation among mass produced products. I It doesn't take much to knock an element out of alignment. I always get a kick out of posts wherein someone relates how they dropped a lens on concrete, then report how it's still okay since only the filter ring is bent:-). Grover Cleveland once said, A man is known by the company he keeps, and also by the company from which he is kept out. snip And Groucho Marx once said, I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. I'm not sure, but I think there's a connection between these two quotes. He was such a laugh! I can't help but chuckle at this one every time I hear it: In the year 1842-43, as editor of the Rheinische Zeitung, I first found myself in the embarrassing position of having to discuss what is known as material interests. ... the debates on free trade and protective tariffs caused me in the first instance to turn my attention to economic questions. ... When the publishers of the Rheinische Zeitung conceived the illusion that by a more compliant policy on the part of the paper it might be possible to secure the abrogation of the death sentence passed upon it, I eagerly grasped the opportunity to withdraw from the public stage to my study. PESO - Neither Rain, nor Sleet, nor Snow...
I present this as something of a counterpoint to Jack's sunny garden fence shot. I know that the titular phrase is associated with postal delivery types, but it certainly applies to bike messengers as well. This was taken the week before last, on the day of our Great Non-storm. We were supposed to get something like 30 cm, but by the time it reached us we got maybe 6-10 cm (4 or 5 inches) - a snowfall, to be sure, but hardly the storm of the century that they predicted. Still, while it was coming down it got quite heavy at times: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2011/02/neither-rain-nor-sleet-nor-snow.html Had a hell of a time focusing; the autofocus was (I suspect) being fooled by the heavy snow, which also made it hard to focus manually (can't remember which I did here, but one way or the other, it's out of focus). Still, I think it gives a good idea of the fun bike messengers have in the winter. ;-) Hope you enjoy. OT - Update on the Injury Front
Some of you may recall that back in December I broke a bone in my left hand. Well, that's healed quite nicely, thanks to weekly visits for physio and flexibility exercises that were diligently performed several times per day at home. Although it's stiff in the morning, it soon feels pretty much normal, except that I notice a slight lack of strength at times (it's about 90%, quite normal for this duration after the injury, according to the therapist). So, a three weeks ago I get the green light to get back on the bike, and the next day I notice a somewhat acute (but bearable) pain where I know the Achilles tendon to be. I continue to ride, hoping I can work through it and it might go away. Alas, after three days of working through it, I realize that although it's not getting worse, it's also not getting better, so off to the hospital I go. Sure enough, it's Achilles tendinosis (the new word for Achilles tendinitis). Not bad, just inflamed (and swollen as hell), due to getting back on the bike too quickly after 6 weeks off. I went for a follow-up last weekend, and they told me to stay off the bike for another two weeks (meaning that, hopefully, next week will be my last doing the courier thing on-foot-and-transit). Luckily it doesn't hurt at all to walk. Lots of icing and stretching exercises, and this week it's feeling the best it has since the occurance, plus the swelling it almost gone. I guess that age is catching up to me somewhat, eh? ;-) The good part is that I'm getting lots of pictures while walking and transiting. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Yes I am using the onboard flash and will have to rely on it for a while until I get the monies for a flash. I may also need to research the settings on the camera too as this may have caused them to be a bit more dark than they should have been as I took the pictures. Where are the bikes? I see bike shorts. I see helmets. I even see at least one young lady jogging in the sand with bike shoes. But no bikes. :-( Otherwise, a fine gallery. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
