The guy on the stone pillar is indeed a person. His girlfriend was standing next to me, so I asked her if she thought he would mind having his picture taken. I personally hate movies for displaying still images, I don't have an easy way to skip ones I'm not interested in, even if I can pause on ones I like. I don't propose that this is the right way to present still images in general, Larry. I didn't say you were. What I was trying to demonstrate here is that you can use Keynote to produce a slide presentation with nicely done transitions as you flip from slide to slide. The capability of also outputting an auto-running slideshow as a movie file is an aside. It does that well. I also presume that if *you* are the one showing images as a slide show, you've edited out all the ones you don't want to present. An auto-run slide show with a recorded audio track of you explaining your work is often a handy thing to have for a website where you are not there to be in control of the presentation. There is also that. The first thing that I probably need to do is pick a laptop and put together a collection of jpegs to show on a it, and then process them to the resolution of its screen. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Is it the lens or camera that makes the images pop in Nikon and Canons?
Actually, i find my Pentax Dslr shots have more exciting colour than my Nikons. Some one a long time ago mentioned the Nikon are geared toward Kodak film, browns and reds were as Pentax went with a Fuji film, greens and blues. Not sure if that has any truth to it, but it looks that way to me. I find my Nikon's not a poppy, but my older ones, the D1 and D1H seem to be sharper but then again i have more Nikon fast glass than Pentax. Re: OT: TAKUMAR-A Camera Lens (7632035)
First of all, one of the surest ways to make sure that something goes for more than it otherwise would have is to post a link to it in a forum (or mailing list) of people who use lenses of the same camera mount that you do. All you do is attract people to the item you are interested in, that may have otherwise been unaware. (Links to active auctions or Craigslist ads is a pet peeve of mine.) Secondly, if you want to know the relative merits of a lens most Pentax users will probably recommend the Pentax Forums Lens and Accessories Review Database: http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/ Those threads often contain photos taken with that lens. Another easy way to find images taken with the lens is to search for the lens in Flickr. Just put the lens info in the search box and see what comes up. Then read the description or tags to make sure it was with the same lens. Thirdly, in general, the Takumar-A series is thought of as inferior to the Pentax SMC K, M, or A lenses, optically. However, being an A lens, it will be somewhat easier to use than SMC K or M lenses, which require the extra step of the green button (or A/E button, depending upon your model and settings). Fourthly, regarding the shopgoodwill.com site you really need to look beyond the BID price when determining what you will actually be paying. Most items have a fairly substantial handling charge that they add to each item and their shipping is often way high. On top of that, there is no guarantee of the condition with that site and no returns. The photos are usually too small to make a good judgment on condition, so you are really rolling the dice when you buy there. The people who take photos for the various Goodwills across the country are mostly morons when it comes to photographing lenses. I got the K-3 screen from focusingscreen.com for my K200D (it was simply a Nikon focusing screen with shims) because it was a better deal than the KatzEye. Why do you shoot?
Tim just gave us some pretty macro flower pics. A lot of people will like them. I enjoy them as well and even really liked a couple. But as someone said a couple of weeks ago, the more seriously he takes his photography the less he shoots. The question is: How do we better our photography and get past cliche images? Can we take it more seriously without falling into either the trap of elitism or the trap of demanding a certain level of commitment from others? (That's the motivation behind my recent technical criticisms. We can do better without burning ourselves out.) I think about the retirement home with little old ladies taking oil paint lessons so that they can do still life paintings of daisies. I wonder how many of us have nothing better in our imagination than warm fuzzies. And I think Tim senses some of this with the sarcasm in his title about beating us to a bloody pulp with these cliche images. In 2D art one can hardly get more cliche than pretty flowers. So the challenge is this: Make a picture say something. Make it say one word That is, other than Ah or Ooo. A real word. High. Long. Fast. Friend. Love. Charity. Cold. Hot. Soft. Hard. Tomorrow. Yesterday. Win. Lose. Amateur. Professional. Try. Succeed. Fail. Return. Leave. Strong. Weak. Majesty. Humility. Service. Nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs -- they all work. This can help you when you take pictures at kids baseball games or at a wedding. Capture more than just the people. Get their faces, their hands, their interactions with each other and the world around them, their full expressions. That's what makes the Ali(Wasn't he still C. Clay at the time) v Liston picture so special. http://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/sports-products/muhammad-ali-framed-8x10-photo---ali-over-sonny-liston.html Sorry about the rant, but cliche images bother me deeply. Sorry about the rant, but cliche images bother me deeply. Why does what other people choose to shoot bother you? It's not the what. It's the why. And it's not a moral response. Per the rest of my statement, its a longing to see people do so much more. A thing of beauty is a joy forever but a cliche wears thin in a minute. Now if people are happy shooting pretty flowers, that just fine. My desire is for people to do, at a minimum, better flowers. Re: Why do you shoot?
I've been thinking a lot about this very subject. I've got a lot of things that I ought to be spending my time and money on, but I've been spending them on photography. On one level, I think I take pictures to get better at photography. It's almost a zen thing. On another level, I've been learning a lot of humility lately in all of the other areas that I used to think I was good at. The bar for impressing non-photographers with your photography is really pretty low. I know that most of my photos are mediocre, and most of the people on this list do too, but compared to most of the crap that most people shoot, it's pretty good, so it's an easy way to get people to say nice things about me. On Mar 31, 2011, at 10:39 AM, Collin Brendemuehl wrote: Tim just gave us some pretty macro flower pics. A lot of people will like them. I enjoy them as well and even really liked a couple. But as someone said a couple of weeks ago, the more seriously he takes his photography the less he shoots. Actually, I said that the more professional style work I do, the less that I do for fun. By professional style, I meant photography for other people, of the sort that people often (used to) get paid for. The question is: How do we better our photography and get past cliche images? Can we take it more seriously without falling into either the trap of elitism or the trap of demanding a certain level of commitment from others? (That's the motivation behind my recent technical criticisms. We can do better without burning ourselves out.) I think of flower photos as candy. Pleasant, but not generally substantial, and just fine in moderation. When it gets down to it, I guess that my mushroom photos are also technically flower photos too. One way of getting around the cliche is that while a photo of a flower is cliche, when juxtaposed with other subjects, they're no longer cliche. A flower arrangement in the engine compartment of a hot rod, a beautiful flower being held by a street beggar, the stem of a rose in the barrel of a gun (at least it wasn't a cliche when it was first done). Sorry about the rant, but cliche images bother me deeply. Re: Why do you shoot?
I am obviously going to have to do some still-life images of daisies. But I think you're maybe overthinking it. I am not a professional photographer nor do my efforts reach the level where the term art is applicable. Owning cameras pleases me. Looking around me and photographing things I think deserve it pleases me. Editing photos pleases me. Pushing back boundaries such as low light, tricky focus, moving targets, and candid street photography pleases me. Seeing the edited photos nicely presented on a high-quality screen pleases me. When my pictures give pleasure to others, that pleases me a whole lot. Looking at other peoples' photos here pleases me. The proportion that do so is much less than 100% but plenty high enough to keep me coming back. Photos which obviously partake of cliche probably please a lower proportion of people here than those which are in some sense more serious. But a little eye candy never hurt anyone. -Tim On Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 10:39 AM, Collin Brendemuehl coll...@brendemuehl.net wrote: Tim just gave us some pretty macro flower pics. Sincerely, Collin Brendemuehl http://kerygmainstitute.org He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose -- Jim Elliott Personally, I shoot what catches my eye. If that happens to be a flower, so be it. But, most of the time, it's not the flower itself that catches my attention, but the way the light falls on it. Having only pursued photography relatively seriously as a hobby for a little over a year, I'm still learning a lot about the camera itself, and a great deal more about photography itself. So, in essence, I shoot to learn how to shoot. Sometimes, flowers provide a great opportunity to learn how the camera captures light. Also, there's the fact that I like taking photos that people like to look at. I don't shoot for other photographers, simply because there's really no way to impress them. Every photographer has his own notion of what makes a great photo. I spend precious little time worrying about the technical details of my shots -- and that obviously shows a great percentage of the time. But, when I put the camera to my eye, I have an expectation of what I want my photos to look like when I finish with them, and I gear my shooting toward that end: Shoot, chimp -- nah, do-over. Shoot, chimp -- dammit. Shoot, chimp -- getting closer. Shoot, chimp -- dammit. And, then, there's the fact that I love to photograph just about anything that will catch my eye -- birds, flowers, people, cars, junk, hot babes, dead opossums, you-name-it. If it has something about it that recommends itself to the eye, I think it's worth shooting. As I see it, if you're walking past something that has obvious beauty and decide not to shoot it because, well, someone's going to make fun of you for shooting it, you've given up a little bit of the joy that made you want to be a photographer in the first place. Part of the beauty of the Ali vs. Liston image is the fact that it puts the viewer there at ringside. It captured the climactic moment that makes people want to go to boxing matches. And that was a good part of the rationale behind my shot choices while I was out in California -- to capture what I saw while I was there and to give the people who will look at my photos (the vast majority of whom are non-photographers) a sense of what I saw while I was there. Regrettably or not, a great deal of what I saw was flowers and bugs and the sort of thing that real photographers would consider cliche. I'm comfortable with that, just as I'm comfortable with the notion that people on the list who see what I've posted will say, Well, it looks like Walt yanked out the K-x and ran out to the flower patch again. Pass! In the end, I guess my view is that, even though some images are naturally more compelling than others, there's no reason not to photos that other people will like. There's no crime in making non-photographers smile, even if it does curl the upper lip of your photographic betters. -- Walt --

Re: Why do you shoot?
I shoot all manner of things, some of which might be considered cliches. I shoot flowers, because I'm a gardener and I like flowers. I sometimes want to preserve the look of a bloom at its peak, much like photographing a person in their best years. I shoot people in coffee shops and on the street, because I take delight in capturing a moment in a life -- perhaps a fleeting expression or a gesture. I shoot wildlife because I like tramping around in the woods, and I find animals attractive. I shoot my granddaughter, Grace, because I want to record her life. I shoot cars because I'm paid to do so. And when I get an assignment from the Times photo desk, I shoot whatever the hell they ask me to shoot. In between all that, I shoot anything that strikes my fancy and that might make an attractive picture. There's one thing I never do. I never consider whether or not someone else might consider my choice of subject matter to be cliched. I don't give a damn if they do. I´ve been through lots of books, thoughts, cliches and ambitions but I think I have ended up with something very simple (or maybe not): - I relax taking pictures. It makes me think of something else and looking for things or situations that interests me. - I am in many ways a restless person, I don´t like doing the same thing twice, so I guess that makes me avoid the cliches I have photographed before (but if I find a new cliche I will try it). - I also found that as I take pictures of things that I find interesting the pictures becomes kind of an introspective tour. There´s some weird humor here, like looking into a distorted mirror, but also a test made on my youngest boy and his slightly strange visual talent made me look again. - And I like the philosophical parts of photography, the idea of capturing the moment you choose, and doing that making that moment or subject in some way more important than all the others. Sometimes it is strange to see which moments I chose to remember. - And of course I like having people look at them, sometime surprising them or see things from another angle, but even if I can imaging closing the web site and stop showing the pictures I can´t imagine not taking pictures... So I guess I just take pictures, and sometimes I try to find out why :-) DagT -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Oh come on now. Yvon Bourque's K-5 e-book review
Out of consideration, I've cc'd Bourque on this review. I don't mean this as a slam of his book, but as a review. Most people appreciate knowing when others are discussing their work, and a few actually appreciate constructive feedback. I know that I don't always enjoy the feedback that I get, but I always appreciate the sprit that it is given in. About the time I ordered my K-5 someone on PDML recommended Bourque's e-book, so I bought a copy. I've never been fond of the Pentax manuals, they discuss the effect that the modes are supposed to have, but don't really explain what the camera really does. I want something that says this mode will set the exposure based on the background but will use a flash so someone in the foreground is well exposed and not motion blurred. Unfortunately the sample from the book available on his site doesn't actually include any meat just a bit of introductory material. The link is at: http://yvon-bourque.blogspot.com/ My biggest issues with it have to do with it being an e-book. When I get a new camera, I read through the manual when I have a few spare moments, usually at meals at restaurants. With an e-book that just isn't convenient, at least until I get some sort of tablet computer or e-book reader. So, despite having had the book for over three weeks, I'm only about halfway through it. Arguably, a bit early to write a review, but my issues so far have been more with the form than the content. I know how much work it is to write a book http://red4est.com/pdapi/body.html And I also know how much work it is to make separate versions, and how little money there is in them. That being said, if Bourque really wanted to improve the usefulness of this book, he'd format it in separate chapters for smaller files, for reading on smart phones like the moto droid or the iPhone. Not only would it then be available to read in small bits when I've got a few minutes (grabbing food-substitute at McHell or suchlike) but it would also be available to use as a reference when I'm shooting. Speaking of using it as a reference, it would be nice if the table of contents actually had functional links into the content. Bourque has rudimentary copy protection on it. A simple dictionary word that if someone wanted to share the book they could just post or share the password. In short, the copy protection does nothing to really protect the copy, but it is a pain in the ass every time I want to read the book. The copy I downloaded is revision 1.0, and it is rife with typos, and a few technical errors. He really needs someone who hasn't read every one of his other books to sit down with a printout, and a red pen, and copy edit it. I actually considered at least doing a cut and paste of the errors that I found, but copy protection got in the way. The material in the book is well written, and I feel better than the Pentax manual. It does seem to go into more detail, and covers the material from other than the corporate viewpoint. The vast majority of the material in the book is for people new to not just Pentax DSLRs, but to photography in general. Most of the people on the PDML don't need to know about JPEG modes (though they should be included in a comprehensive manual), nor do they need to know how adjusting the f-stop affects depth of field. These are things that I really feel ought to be in separate files so that downloading and decrypting the book doesn't take nearly so long. The material on the actual menus is useful and comprehensive, and I'd love to see it as a separate file, one that I can carry on my droid, and access when I'm trying to figure out how to do something. It is, unfortunately, not well indexed in the book, which makes it tough to use as a reference, especially since being electronic, you can't mark the index with one finger while you flip through the book to the pages referenced in the index. Another section that I think the book would benefit from is moving to the K-5 from other models. If you already know how to use a K-x, or a K20, then there is more that you know about using the K-5 than you don't. The book has a lot of pictures. Many of them are very pretty, at least when they're printed out on nice paper, I'm sure. A lot gets lost in translation to the e-book format I'm afraid. Also, most of the pictures are, frankly, fluff. They may look nice, but they don't really convey a lot of information, and they take up a lot of space in the file which makes it slow to start up on anything but a desktop computer. They would look great in a printed book, especially one that is much easier to flip pages than a monolithic PDF file, but in electronic formate they get in the way far more than they illustrate. In short, if he were writing the book for someone like myself, he could edit the 300+ pages down to well under 100 pages, possibly as little as 50. Mind you, my favorite technical book of all time is The

These are very nice floral captures... so glad to see color instead of what the winter had brought us.. RE: OT: TAKUMAR-A Camera Lens (7632035)
Thanks for the advice... I have decided not to bid on the lens... I am still keeping an eye out for a good and fairly cheaply priced macro lens and perhaps a cheaply priced 28 or 50mm lens. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Brian Walters Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2011 12:27 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: OT: TAKUMAR-A Camera Lens (7632035) On Wed, 30 Mar 2011 21:46 -0500, Jeffery Johnson jefferytjohn...@bellsouth.net wrote: Will it work with my K-R and is it worth bidding on Yes - and probably not.
