Re: At last - the perfect camera bag

Interesting review. I handled the X100 again when I was in NY and my
opinion of its "fiddlyness" hadn't changed at all. Beyond that, it
seems a nice camera. I'm happy with what I chose anyway.

I like the bag you found, Bob, too. Nice for camera only.

That is true; the below are essentially flower shots...

However, the first is meant to show my admiration to nature more than
recording a pretty object.
1) http://500px.com/photo/802711

In the second, I am trying to share how it feels to be "within summer"
(as someone who prefers winters more).
2) http://500px.com/photo/803056

It took me about an hour to walk around, think about and shoot these...

Comments and criticisms are appreciated; for abuse, you may want to
first try those who seem to invite them ;)

I'm with the 'croppers' on this one. I think the strong shapes and
shadows of the top two thirds of the frame are disturbed by the bottom
section.

Nicely done, just the same.

Re: Playing with a D200

2011-06-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The Nikon D200 was released onto the market in November 2005. It is
the first Nikon body since the F3 that I found myself liking. I'd been
shooting with Pentax since the beginning of that year and when my
brother bought one of these I was very impressed with it. I remain so,
although subsequent models out-perform it handily.

The follow-on D300 and D300s models, to me, returned Nikon's line to
the level of competence and quality that I was used to with the
FM2/FE2/F3 lineup in 1982.

Thanks to everyone for the usual PDML generous, intelligent, and kind responses
to my novice-y predicament. As Paul's first sentence makes clear, I was sorely
confused on this topic, and have a lot yet to learn. Some observations in
response, to test how much I understand:

* Motion blur was not the problem. There was some of it in some of the images,
but the I was talking about was the one you guys nailed: wildly inappropriate
focus.

*I have two choices: Focus manually on the target or use hyperfocal focus.
[Though really, in the circumstances I described, focusing on the target is
likely to be necessary.]

* Hyperfocal focus: Use the DOF scale; set focus of the most distant point of
the scale for the aperture used to the farthest point you want to be in focus.

* On all lenses I've seen, there's a dramatic jump from the longest definite
distance on the DOF scale to infinity. That's why it's often hard to set the
hyperfocal distance.

* The DOF scale is not the only guide to the hyperfocal distance. It can be
calculated. There are tables.

* Why is hyperfocal focusing called hyperfocal?

* In the circumstances I described, use higher ISO [400 to 800], and faster
shutter speed [1/500].

* Manual focusing in sports photography is difficult. It takes practice. One
strategy is to focus on a location and wait for the action to appear.
[Difficult in soccer. The goal mouth comes to mind, but it covers a lot more
territory than a base in baseball.]

* I've chosen manual focus because it forces me to learn. When I've learned,
and it seems to be needed, I'll consider autofocus. At this point, that time is
a long way off.

That's what I'm taking away from what I got. Corrections of understandings and
reminders of oversights are welcome. [*I* think my understanding is pretty
vague.]

Again, thanks to everyone who responded. I quoted Paul because he summed it up
pretty well, but there was such clear near unanimity that I couldn't really
single out any responses as most helpful.

I do want to thank Matthew, though, for the link to the DOFmaster site.

Nice grab Paul. Colorful and cute (like a lot of your shots, actually)

I must say though that I dislike clicking through to your photos now
that Photo.net has that ad I have to sit through or click-off. It's not
a huge deal, but it does suck. And I have *almost* enough suck in my

Very picturesque and very impressive for a cellphone. I was in Dunedin
in 1976 - my brother-in-law was doing an internship at the Dunedin
Hospital so we took the opportunity to be escorted around the country in
his car. Unfortunately I can't remember much of the Dunedin area and I
suspect it's changed a lot since we were there anyway. I do remember
the train trip from Christchurch to Dunedin - slow but spectacular.

I can't recall hearing about the Aramoana massacre but I'm sure it made
news here at the time. Only a few years later (1996) we had a similar
incident at Port Arthur in Tasmania.

I don't think I knew you'd been down in this country. I don't know if the news
coverage of that event would have extended much past NZ or maybe Australia.

Dunedin is a lovely city with lots of beautiful old buildings and a very
Scottish heritage. I find myself paying more attention to historic buildings
lately since we lost so many up here in Christchurch.

About the only downside of Dunedin is that it's reputed to be COLD in winter.

Nope, a lot of it was outside during the day, I did play a bit with it and an
SB800.

You can see the shots I got with the K-5 at:

This is true, and I repeated that a lot of it was unfamiliarity with the
camera, but it really made me appreciate, for example, being able to adjust the
iso without taking my eye from the viewfinder, or for that matter, my left hand
from the lens.

I was talking to someone tonight about Nikons, and his gripe with the film era
cameras, was basically the same as mine, the controls were all backwards from
what I was used to.

I was certainly able to shoot with it. I've also spent a few minutes here and
there with D700s.

When I was shopping for my first DSLR, I much preferred the D40 over the rebel.

It was in reasonable light, and since I was alternating between the Nikon and
the Pentax, the lighting conditions didn't really affect my perception.

For the first shot, but not the second or third. I couldn't just lock on to
someone and keep firing. I'm sure that there's a way, it just didn't leap out
at me. As it turns out, that is exactly what I did.

I don't have an F70, just an F, EM, FE, FE2 and an N6006.

Am I right that this lens has slow 3.5-5.6 aperture? Am I also right to
understand that when you were shooting the light was rather dim?

I haven't seen any of the photos yet, so I can't speak to the image
quality, but I can say that shooting with the D200 really made me
appreciate the ergonomics of my K5.

Habit is the second nature, as we say in Russian.

Some of my issues are undoubtably unfamiliarity, but while I gripe
about having to use two hands if I want to review photos on the K-5,
it seems as if half the controls on the D200 are out of reach of the
right thumb or forefinger. Changing mode, or ISO was a complicated

A friend of mine has D200. After taking it to my hands few times I find
it reasonably familiar and in fact I can shoot with it.

Focus with the 18-200 didn't seem to be any faster, if even as fast
as with the 16-50 on the K-5.

See my questions above.

It's probably just unfamiliarity, but I didn't see a button
conveniently marked as AF to disable AF once focus was locked.

If you keep pressing shutter button half-way, doesn't that do the trick?

And the shutter, while not as loud as the D700, was a far cry from
the whisper quiet snick of the K-5.

D200 was the first camera after plethora of 6MP cameras based on Sony
sensor. It was 2005 or 2006 somewhat before K10D. That certainly can
explain few things.

I will say that I liked the feel of it in my hand. It was noticeably
bigger than the K-5. I like that I can make my K-5 bigger with a grip
if I were to want to, but if space is at a premium, I can also make
the camera smaller, and easier to carry.

I dare you find Nikon F70 (film body) and familiarize yourself with it.
Based on my experience, all modern digital cameras are pedigree of
ergonomics and ease of use compared with this one...
