Re: light modifier idea
Dave, with decently powerful strobes (eg 400 WS), *most* rooms available to me are going to look like small rooms. If I am using an umbrella it's because I'm going for high-key, or a well-lit scene, or outdoors where the photo-bomb effect isn't noticed. Take a look at this pair of photos: http://www.zarias.com/shoot-through-umbrella-vs-softbox/ Clearly a softbox in a small room works just fine. That's why softboxen are so highly coveted. It's why I prefer to shoot with them. I'd rather have a big softbox, but that would cost $50 or $100, and a sheet of posterboard is closer to $5. Less, if I use one of the beat up pieces that I bought for backdrops a few years ago. My favorite CD's by them are Under a Violet Moon (1999), Fires at Midnight (2001) and Ghost of a Rose (2003), while their latest works are less captivating. Re: OT computer problems.
Does the drive spin up? If it does, you could try a kit to go from the drive to USB to see if it still can read data. If so, you should be able to recover what seems to be lost. Cost for the adapter kit is about 30 bucks. You could also try booting with Knoppix from a live CD to see if your data on the drive is recoverable. Of course, you'd have to reinstall the dead drive again to use Knoppix for data recovery. Derby, on the screen, in web size files it does not look any different than your other street photography, be it m43 or Pentax or other gear you have and use. OT OM-D OMG!
Hello Larry, just got the June issue of Better Photography magazine, where there is an excellent review of the Olympus OM-D. The PLUS points are: quick AF, good image quality from a small 17.3 x 13 mm live MOS sensor, customisability. MINUS point are: small buttons, price. Final Ratings are: Features - 13/15; Performance - 38/45; Build Quality - 14/15; Ergonomics - 17/20. OVERALL RATING 85 %. The Editor says that if you do not mind a slightly bigger size, then the Nikon D7000 beats the Olympus hollow. It goes on to say further that the cheaper Panasonic DMC- GX1 may be a better buy. People get nostalgic at its circa 1984 SLR retro design, and may buy it on impulse. Going by the Overall Rating (85%) for Camera Tests in this Mag, I would not buy it. Anything over 90% is OK. I also noted that this company (Olympus) was embroiled in a multi-million Dollar fraud recently and it will tend to recoup the loss from us gullible customers. Regards. Re: Rough draft of book; CC?
Page 4 and page 19 IIRC use a duplicate image. As a non-dancer, my impression is of a whole bunch of photos of people dancing, either focused on one couple or on a group. Then after a while you switch to a whole bunch of photos of people (dancing). I.e., now for many pages you show head shots or head and shoulder shots rather than 3/4 shots. That was a pleasant relief for me, as a non-dancer, but I would think that for any audience it might work better if you had more of a mix of style throughout rather than predominantly one with an abrupt switch to predominantly another. As for technical quality, I saw no problem in my quick pass through via Preview. Overall I think this is something that your dancer friends will greatly appreciate. stan On Jun 9, 2012, at 6:17 PM, Larry Colen wrote: I'm putting together a blurb book of a dance weekend that I took photos at last April. OT Not worth paying for
An author of dog training books contacted my wife about a picture I took of my wife and our late Doberman. The author wanted to use the picture in a book she is writing. My wife respects the author and liked the idea of being in the book, but I didn't want to give away a photograph for a book to be sold at profit. I realized that the book is likely to sell on a pretty small scale, so I thought a good compromise would be to allow her to use my photograph, in exchange for a free copy of the book. That would make my wife happy (for both the book and being in it) and be a minimal expense for the author. The author declined these terms. You see, she plans to use hundreds of photographs, and clearly it would be too expensive to agree to such terms. (Since the author is seeking permission from the subjects, rather than the photographers, I'm sure the book will be full of photographs that she doesn't have the right to publish.) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I am starting to think that the likes of Sony NEX with couple of adapters (K-mount and Leica M-mount) can be my next enablement. It is unfortunate that Ricoh does not upgrade their GXR system modules (50 mm macro and Leica M-mount) with 16 MP sensor from Sony, or I would have bought these probably on the spot… Boris, don't diss the Ricoh Mount A12 - it does a better job than one might expect for a 12 MP sensor because of the lack of an AA filter and the offset microlenses. :) I have one and I'm not sure that more pixels are needed to get IQ close to the M9. It's better than the 16 mP A5n as it is… Regards, Jim Ricoh system is very high up in my order of priorities. The M-mount module is attractive but I am a bit uncertain about its dynamic range. I'm shooting for many months with K-5 and it spoiled me, you know. I don't care for pixel count so that 12 MP would be absolutely fine. The reviews on the net say that focus peeking implementation of Ricoh is good enough for all practical purposes and that the lack of AA filter is great advantage, as the sensor truly preserves the artistic character of the lens, so to speak. My only gripe is dynamic range because the transition from 12 MP to 16 MP also included the huge advancement in that department. Unless something dramatic happens in the months to come, I can easily see getting a body and a module. Oh by the way, do I understand correctly that then the shutter is closed (that is when the power is off, etc) the module is sealed from dust? So that dust is practically a non-issue here, right? Hey, Bulent! Don't be sad. This is still very much a toy. I won't wanna go into geeky list-of-things-that-suck mode, but let is suffice to say that this camera is good mostly for things such as (G-d forbid) recording results of a road accident or some other such thing where it does not really matter what camera one has, as long as it is there and operable. The good thing about this camera is that it one more time gave me a trigger to think about alternative to rather bulky and heavy DSLR system as opposed to lean and mean options that can shoot just as good. And having shot with Pentax 645 I should say that by no means such gear should be disregarded. Without any intent to start a fight or flame I submit to the court a question - how slightly bigger??? There are moments where Nikon D700 beats Pentax K-5 hollow, like you put it, Bipin, but it is not slightly bigger, it is great deal bigger, as much bigger as to be a show stopper for some people such as myself with rather weak wrists. Granted D7000 is not that big, but imagining the likes of Olympus E-Px cameras or Panasonic GF-1 with correspondingly small penta-prism on top does not make me think that D7000 is only slightly(*) bigger than OM-D...
