Re: PESO: (Another damned) West KY Sunset - 1/16/2013
Thanks, Frank! I did bump the saturation a little and darken the shadows, but noticed loss of detail when I did, so I backed off some. It's not a perfect representation of the scene, but it's reasonably. The last one I uploaded is closer to it, the colors not being quite so intense -- especially the blues. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/838961/ It's still more vivid than the actual scene, but not by a whole lot. But, yeah -- I did take some liberties. Thanks again! -- Walt On 1/20/2013 8:13 PM, knarftheria...@gmail.com wrote: Nothing wrong with another damned sunset if it looks like that. Spectacular! Weird Lightroom keywording issue
Here's an odd one: I'm gathering photos for the 2013 PDML Photo Annual. Naturally, Lightroom is a big help in organizing the images and making basic corrections (Note: So far Annsan is winning the coveted Most Dust Spots On the Sensor award for 2013). I also add three keywords to each image file: PDML, Photo Annual and 2013. Make sense so far? Good. Next I export the images from Lightroom to make a web gallery for the editors to view. I have the export module set to keep *all* metadata, which it does... except for *one* keyword. Lightroom removes the PDML keyword from all the exported photos. All the other keywords are present in the exported JPEGs. But no matter what I try Lightroom removes PDML! Short of a secret Adobe conspiracy against us ;-) I can't imagine what's causing this. He was very good as speaking in metaphor (I tend to think that same way, so I appreciated that). But I guess specifically, what I disliked about his attitude was that he came across as presenting himself as font of creativity and he can't contaminate that by looking at what others have done. Well, I hate to break it to you, but that's how you learn. In fact, if he was honest, that's how HE learned. That's why cooking shows are so popular, for example. You see the ingredients (and equipment) that they use and you get inspired to try it yourself. Now an experienced cook is going to be able to get as good (or better) results even if they don't use exactly the same ingredients or equipment because they know what they are doing. A true kitchen artist can just be thrown into a room with a set number of ingredients and create something great. But they are fooling themselves if they think they got to that point without standing on the shoulders of other who came before them, learning their ways and copying their recipes. I think it is similar with learning anything, like portraiture. You have to learn some basics with regards to flattering lighting for different facial types, etc. You have to learn how/why setting shoulders and slight head tilts towards either the lower or higher shoulder makes one look masculine or rather feminine. You didn't invent that. You didn't discover that. It just IS. But when you are starting out you need to learn to see that. In time, I think we tend to start taking what we have learned and thinking that we always knew it (or worse, that we originated it) when we did no such thing. This guy is just further down the tunnel than most and so now he wants to establish that fact with his audience and belittle the approach of learning from tear sheets? Please. His basic point regarding how your success or creativity is not completely dependent upon a particular piece of equipment? Yeah, I think most of us already know that. But that doesn't mean that we don't still accumulate equipment for whatever reason - if only out of curiousity/experience with something we haven't worked with before. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You'd have to look very carefully to see anything intimate at this exhibit, Derby. Actually, I count about 10 items smaller than mine, with the smallest being 10x10 inches. Dimensional-peeping aside, the show as a whole looks good, with larger pieces given more breathing space and smaller pieces grouped nicely together. I have to give the jury and curator credit for creating a coherent exhibit from disparate material. I hope to attend the jurors walkthrough this Saturday to hear their thoughts directly. Thanks! In fact it was a crush of the kind where inching sideways was necessary to navigate at times. Surprising as Mississauga is not in any way a cultural hot spot and it was also pretty cold (-9C) and snowing tonight. I'll have to wait until my wife's PS is emptied to see if there are any stills to share. I took my K20D but didn't really bother with it. Seemed more of an enjoy-the-moment kind of evening to me. Met some friends, drank some wine, had a couple of veggie spring rolls. Wondered how on earth a few of the works ever got selected, but on the whole enjoyed the show. This was the first year (of 35) that photography was included with traditional fine art media, so I was proud to have been selected and to represent the photographic intruders. :-) I printed my shot at 30 by 20 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas, which I thought was plenty large enough, but it was dwarfed by the paintings, some of which were probably eight feet tall. I'd say the size of the average work in this show is 3x4 feet -- clearly Big Art is In. But interestingly the show's First Prize winner was a conceptual piece made up of a collage of photos. Not strictly Photography per se as it's documentation of the work which is really an installation, or a series of smaller installations. I didn't win anything, except for a warm buzz of participation -- or from the wine; unsure which. Re: PESO 2013 - 012 - GDG
These days, especially when travelling, I don't always have much time to view all the PESOs (but a large portion), and commenting is even more problematic. This photo caught my eye in two ways: First, it is rather subtle, like some watercolor paintings, with a very interesting combination and juxtaposition of the almost monotone (albeit toned) feature. I like it. (And if I were to print it I'd try watercolor paper. I would consider minimalistic frame or alternatively, I'd print on one of those fancy/funky papers that have some texture (but not canvas), or just on watercolor paper with the mask producing wavy edges.) Second, I liked simplicity, but something was bothering my eye, especially in the Flickr lightbox presentation (with the black background). After seeing it against the standard white background of Flickr, I liked it better, but then I appreciated it better against the black background. So, I cannot figure out what exactly bothers me in the lightbox presentation (as linked). Maybe it's just the size that is a bit too small that way. However, and this is different, the two horizontal streaks at the top left, just above the most left pod, do distract me. In addition to their a bit rough texture, they go against the preferential vertical lines in a metal scribe on glass sound way. wow, I missed this one. I'm not getting some of the original posts. Lovely blue and I agree with Igor. Great work, Godfrey! There's about a 10 minute walk from there to the gallery. Despite being dismissed as urban-sprawlsville, Mississauga's transit system is pretty civilized. Amazingly they keep to their schedule too. Have to admit that I'm a bit uneasy about art competitions, especially between different media as seems to be the case here. Just being included makes you a winner! cheers, frank I talked about that with an artist friend this morning. The whole juried competition is a negative to many people, but her take is nothing ventured, nothing gained. She entered this one and did not get selected, but she's not taking it badly. She entered a competition in nearby Burlington the week after and got in, so she's happy there. I had nothing riding on getting into this: no expectations, wasn't holding my breath. I simply submitted my best work and left it at that. I wanted to see that shot printed anyway, so I had little money at stake either. It matches our dining room decor, so I know where it's likely going when the exhibition ends. :-) --- Original Message --- From: Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com Sent: January 17, 2013 1/17/13 To: Pentax Discuss Mailing List PDML@pdml.net Subject: Re: I've been selected for a juried art show, VAM35 Well, the opening is over, and it was really well attended. Re: Snow Crystals with the Pentax Q
Gorgeous, Mark. If you controlled the flash through cheap wireless triggers that don't support P-TTL the camera should see that there's no response from the flash and assume manual. Re: PESO 2013 - 012 - GDG
Thank you Igor, Christine and Bruce! Some interesting comments to respond to from Igor: On Mon, Jan 21, 2013 at 9:29 AM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: ... This photo caught my eye in two ways: First, it is rather subtle, like some watercolor paintings, with a very interesting combination and juxtaposition of the almost monotone (albeit toned) feature. I like it. (And if I were to print it I'd try watercolor paper. I would consider minimalistic frame or alternatively, I'd print on one of those fancy/funky papers that have some texture (but not canvas), or just on watercolor paper with the mask producing wavy edges.) I usually print on one of the fine art matte surface papers, and for this one I'd pick something with a little surface texture (like Somerset Velvet, etc). The paper could be debossed or the edges deckled for this kind of image successfully too, I think, but it would have to be in combination with other similarly treated photos. Second, I liked simplicity, but something was bothering my eye, especially in the Flickr lightbox presentation (with the black background). After seeing it against the standard white background of Flickr, I liked it better, but then I appreciated it better against the black background. So, I cannot figure out what exactly bothers me in the lightbox presentation (as linked). Maybe it's just the size that is a bit too small that way. Dunno, can't say much here. The 'lightbox' viewer mode sizes to the browser window, so much depends on the browser and the system and display you're using it's hard to imagine what might be the issue. However, and this is different, the two horizontal streaks at the top left, just above the most left pod, do distract me. In addition to their a bit rough texture, they go against the preferential vertical lines in a metal scribe on glass sound way. This is always a bit of a challenge when I'm working with the Polaroid. These buggers produce prints which are tough to scan properly, and the prints themselves have interesting surface blemishes and textures the result of being an old, used camera and a curious film. The two artifacts you are pointing out are there in the original, they're part of the way the camera squeegeed the developer into the image sandwich. The image process made them a bit more noticeable. I could tone them down or clone them out, but there are so many other artifacts of the print in the image that once I start working on defects like this I really have to figure a point at which to stop... One of the interesting thing about working film and prints like this compared to digital is that the blemishes and defects of film recording media become a part of the image qualities that you are reaching for. How much to leave in, how much to remove ... all part of the magic. I usually make final decisions on this kind of stuff when I go to make exhibition prints, because then I'm working with how the image translates into similar media. On the aforementioned textured matte paper, these things would likely be much less noticeable. Fun stuff! Gotta load up another film pack and carry the camera again ... :-) -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Trio GESO - my Wanaka adventure
Last week I went to Lake Wanaka to take part in the Lake Wanaka Half which is a half-ironman triathlon (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21.1km run). It's run as part of Challenge Wanaka which is the full ironman distance (yes, double those numbers - they do two laps of each stage). This year one hardman was doubling the full Challenge just for the fun of it. He started the day before so he could finish before the cutoff time of the main race. http://www.challengewanaka.com/home (The video is well worth a look) The scenery is spectacular and the course is renowned as one of the hardest in the world. Even the swim had hills: the legendary nor'west wind had come up overnight so we had some fairly large waves on the lake. On to the photos... I've split them into three galleries. First some pre-race photos of the area: http://www.multi.net.nz/wanaka/pre-race/ Some taken during the race by my wife (with her iPhone) and her brother who had borrowed my camera: http://www.multi.net.nz/wanaka/race-day/ And a few pics from our trip home on Sunday: http://www.multi.net.nz/wanaka/homeward/ Finishing that race was one hell of an experience - I'd had an injury during training which meant I couldn't do anywhere near the amount I needed... but I made up for it with sheer determination on the day :) Cheers, Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Upcoming photo shoot
The studio where we are taking dancing lessons may hire me for their annual gala event. I'm going to do some test shots on Thur. after our class to see about getting the poses that they would like to see. My question is: Do you think the on-camera flash is adequate or should I use something more powerful to capture dancers? If so, manual or auto, dedicated or non-dedicated? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

People dancing argentine tango will be moving slower and easier to keep focus on than folks dancing polka. I'm going to do some test shots on Thur. after our class to see about getting the poses that they would like to see. My question is: Do you think the on-camera flash is adequate or should I use something more powerful to capture dancers? If so, manual or auto, dedicated or non-dedicated? Which body do you have? What is the lighting there like? I've seen about six stops of variation in lighting at dances. How big is the performance area? If you have a K-5 and a reasonably fast 28-35mm lens, you may be best off shooting without flash. If you shoot with flash, be particularly aware of mirrors, windows etc. Also, will these be couples performances or group performances? If you are shooting a group and your flash is at the edge of the dance floor, It could be five feet away from the nearest dancers, and 20 to 40 feet away from the furthest. Inverse square law on a 6x difference in distance is 36 times, or about five stops. Do everything you can to minimize this ratio, which usually means moving the flash as far back as you can, possibly bouncing it, or using several flashes. Painful experience has taught me to push the ISO harder than you think you should. Noise is better than too much motion blur, or too little depth of field. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

on 2013-01-13 8:22 Bruce Walker wrote In fact, the iPhone lightmeter apps cannot do: - spot metering - incident flash - flash/ambient ratios - flash triggering - readings triggered by sync cable - cine readings benefits of living a block from an excellent thrift store: i happen to have a Pentax Spotmeter-V and a Gossen Ultra-Pro, both in great shape; very interesting devices; the Gossen has dozens of functions - reflective, incident, flash, etc. - while the Spotmeter-V is perfectly minimal — just reads EV from a 1 degree spot (it's got a Hycam scale on the side so i use my iPhone to convert EV to exposure) also have an Extech industrial light meter, which i plan to use to check the Gossen's incident readings i don't really need them, but using them for some learning, and will pass them on fairly soon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
About those samyang lenses ....
We just cashed in a bunch of loose coinage and have over $200 in Amazon credits. This is nearly enough for either the Samyang/Rokinon 85/1.4 or the 8mm/3.5 and I'm quite tempted to make an impulse purchase. I've heard a lot of good about the 85/1.4, but since I have the 77/1.8 I'm quite tempted by the 8/3.5. Especially since my current widest lens is my 16-50. Anybody have experience with the 8? Or ideally both lenses? Suggestions? Advice? Warnings? How hard is it to focus the 8mm? Or with the short focal length, is it harder to get the shot out of focus? -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
