I'd still like to see his feet but despite that it's a very nice photo. The

So I landed a paying gig last weekend. I was to document the opening of a
new club: show off the facilities, catch the opening night band, dancing,
drinking, and try to snap some of the staff too. Here's a small set of 12 of
the more interesting shots (of the 74 finals delivered to The Brawley
brass):

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjG1qjie The Brawley Opening

All taken with my K20D, DA* 55, DA* 16-50 & DA* 50-135.

The first three staff shots (wait, bar, kitchen) were lit with a used
$30 AF200T in an 18" softbox on a monopod, gelled 1/2 CTO, and wielded by my
able assistant (my wife). I precomputed the flash exposure assuming a fixed
rough distance to the subjects, then set the shutter to let in ambient room
light about two stops below the key. When WB adjusted for the orange gel,
the background goes a blue tint to give it that cool look.

The west wing and patio shots are HDR, as you've likely guessed -- apologies
in advance. I used Nik HDR Pro and it's pretty good, but I'm not really an
HDR kinda guy. I just figured these facilities shots would benefit from that
Marketing Imperative where Over The Top just isn't good enough. :-)

Most of the dark club dancing and band shots were taken at ISO 3200.
In the past I dismissed that as useless on the K20D but they clean up nicely
with Nik Dfine, so I'm coming to rely on it now. (It even removes colour
banding well so I'm going to go back and revisit some of my "lost" K100Ds
shots.)

Comments welcome, as always.

Re: Non-news story of the day: Kodak not making acetate

2013-06-13 Thread P.J. Alling
No that will be the end for Kodak film. Film was profitable at lower
volumes in the past, it will be again, however you can't run a factory
designed to produce 5 billion square feet of a product a week, (just for
example, I don't know the actual numbers), when demand is 5 thousand
square feet a week. You can however run a factory designed for 5
thousand feet a week profitably. That varies from product to product
however, some machines can be mothballed until you need them quite
nicely. A film plant, probably not. The biggest problem is
distribution, and the internet seems to be designed for niche products.

Not likely to be enough to affect overall demand, really: The biggest
demand isn't from filmmakers shooting with film but for making the
thousands and thousands of *prints* that are distributed to movie
theatres. Once digital projection becomes the norm it'll be over.

On my Alaska cruise a couple of weeks ago, I brought along a monopod and
two bean bags. Didn't really use any of them -- conditions were always
terrible for anything other than handheld high shutter speeds. (The one
event I really planned to use the monopod got canceled -- small-group
photography walk to a glacier -- because weather delayed us enough to
skip Juneau.)

Pentax dealers in the Bay Area?

2013-06-13 Thread Larry Colen
I'm supposed to photograph a friend's wedding Saturday. Technically, I'm
supposed to photograph her surfing to the ceremony on the beach.
As I mentioned, my camera has a bit of an issue at the moment.
I also just found out that due to refinancing my home loan, I'm getting
a big bump in my cashflow (no house payment until August).
I was ready to say WTF, and just go to San Jose Camera and buy a K-5 II,
assuming that their price wasn't too far off of B&H.
All that they have are K30s.

I don't suppose that there are any stores near San Jose, that actually
have the K-5 II in stock?

Although, San Jose Camera's prices aren't too far off of B&H, apart from sales

Re: GESO The Brawley

2013-06-13 Thread Bruce Walker
Thanks, Frank. They _say_ they love the shots, but The Brawley's
owners have been running off their feet since the beginning of May
getting the club ready and then opening (Phil, the owner/manager,
practically lives there), so I don't think they've had a chance to
really appreciate them yet. But I got my cheque, so there can't be any
show-stoppers. :-)

As Gerrit mentioned, The Brawley is a few streets east of Kipling on
The Queensway, north side. Have you been around long enough to recall
a club called OV's? It's that building. OV's was there for 15 years
but gradually turned into a place so dark and seedy that bikers would
avoid it. Then it was renovated with new management and became a
family friendly place called Hollywood, ran into financial trouble
after a few years and now it's renewed as The Brawley.

Re: GESO The Brawley

2013-06-13 Thread Bruce Walker
Thank you, Gerrit.

Re East Wing, you've sharp eyes! :-) Yes, eight of my Postmodern
Pinups and an acrylic of Louise' are on display in the club for the
next 8 weeks. Phil wanted Louise and I to be the first in the door on
soft-opening day and when we arrived L noted the blank walls. Phil has
agreed to let her curate the space and she'll be rotating artists
through there. But I was able to get something up that very afternoon
and they seem to love them, so everyone's happy.

Blues gigs will be happening, don't worry. So far it's been different
groups each Friday and Sunday, an oldies dance Saturday, and I expect
some of our fave blues bands to rotate in. Sometimes there's a $5
cover now, but that's not a bad thing. It's Little Peter and The
Consuls this Sunday which we'll try to make as we know the bassist.

High ISO is the name of the game there, so your K-5 will rock it. You
won't need any FL longer than 135mm as you can easily get near the
stage. Even a fast 50mm will get great results.

Re: GESO The Brawley

2013-06-13 Thread Bruce Walker
Thanks so much, Derby. I really dislike the usual staff shots of them
all standing in an awkward group with forced smiles in front of the
beer posters and was determined to do better.

The two wait staff, Julia and Thomas, had just arrived for their first
ever shift there on Sunday morning. Before they'd even served a
customer I had them posing for me. And they proved to be naturals at
it and we had a lot of fun.

Megan behind the bar was a tougher case. She was ticked that the night
staff had messed up her careful arrangement of glassware in the
fridges, and the draught supply lines for the most popular beer were
screwed up so it wasn't pouring right. I got about three chances to
capture her before we lost her attention; the first two were
underexposed but #3 was good enough, although soft.

My pinup pics are there for two months then we'll rotate in another artist.

Thanks Brian, Paul, Bob W, Ann and Bruce!

On the other hand the stones is a balance to the dark left side. I did try to
avoid them first, though...

water and swimming in my pictures, especially this time of the year :-)

I damn near went for it. That's the IIs from electronics basket, which has the

Chinon AF macro 28-80

2013-06-13 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Picked one up cheap today.
K-mount, but that's where the compatibility ends.
No aperture ring. So I put it on macro and shot the K5 @ f22 with the
flash.
Really not a bad image.
But I don't think I'll keep it.

I'm not entirely sure what was the point going from the K30 to the K50.

To have something 'new' on the market.

The need for 'change' in the eyes of the consumer appears to have sped up.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

We have two galleries lined up for July:

'Temptation' - closing date 30 June. No submissions so far.

'Open Gallery' - closing date 15 July. Two submissions so far.

Thanks, Bruce! I found skateboarders can be "shy" (meaning they get upset when
they see my camera) but when I saw Mike I thought my bikey-ness might get a
good icebreaker - which it was.

I got a few other good ones but nothing uber-spectacular. I hope to get up

It's at Birmingham and Eighth in New Toronto if you're ever in the area...

Re: PESO - Portrait of a Tree Swallow

2013-06-13 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
He was perched on a butt-ugly sheet-metal sign. Really would have ruined the
photo to leave any of it in there I think.

In retrospect I think leaving in the top of his pink legs was a mistake. Just a
distraction, I think. It was such a severe crop I was really leery of going
smaller but now I am rethinking that.

Might try a different crop tonight. Or not; might just work on a new photo.
We'll see.

Thanks to those who commented. And to those who looked. Much appreciated.

G'day all

Another fine gallery with a range of interpretations of the theme. My
favourites - Bruce's 'Trio', Mark's 'Oak Opening', Ken's 'The Forest
for the Trees' and Toine's 'Fresh Green'.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery there)

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

We have two galleries lined up for July:

'Temptation' - closing date 30 June. No submissions so far.

'Open Gallery' - closing date 15 July. Two submissions so far.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

Here's another portrait from down at the ol' salt mine -- a man named
Mark. He's about as nice and polite a man as you could ever hope to meet.

We nearly lost him about a year and a half ago in a car accident. He
spent a good amount of time at Vanderbilt University Hospital undergoing
surgeries before going through about three months of physical therapy.
He's fortunate in a lot of ways -- from being alive at all to having all
his limbs.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/9036796687/
K-5, M-28/2.8, ISO 200, 1/160 sec, f/?

I'm not altogether pleased with the exposure or sharpness, and will
probably return to the shot at some point in the future for further
processing. But, I rarely see Mark these days, so I wanted to be sure to
get at least one shot of him.

The first three staff shots (wait, bar, kitchen) were lit with a used
$30 AF200T in an 18" softbox on a monopod, gelled 1/2 CTO, and wielded
by my able assistant (my wife). I precomputed the flash exposure
assuming a fixed rough distance to the subjects, then set the shutter
to let in ambient room light about two stops below the key. When WB
adjusted for the orange gel, the background goes a blue tint to give
it that cool look.

The west wing and patio shots are HDR, as you've likely guessed --
apologies in advance. I used Nik HDR Pro and it's pretty good, but I'm
not really an HDR kinda guy. I just figured these facilities shots
would benefit from that Marketing Imperative where Over The Top just
isn't good enough. :-)

Most of the dark club dancing and band shots were taken at ISO 3200.
In the past I dismissed that as useless on the K20D but they clean up
nicely with Nik Dfine, so I'm coming to rely on it now. (It even
removes colour banding well so I'm going to go back and revisit some
of my "lost" K100Ds shots.)

It's as if, released from the constraints of focusing and sharpness, have
nothing left but pure composition.

Yeah, sounds like bullshit, but you get my drift.

Why does a cheap camera and a pinhole make me so happy?

Thank you, Larry.

Sooner or later, I'm going to put together a decent-sized collection and
ask around the local restaurant/bars to see if someone will host an

We nearly lost him about a year and a half ago in a car accident. He
spent a good amount of time at Vanderbilt University Hospital
undergoing
surgeries before going through about three months of physical therapy.
He's fortunate in a lot of ways -- from being alive at all to having
all
his limbs.

I'm not altogether pleased with the exposure or sharpness, and will
probably return to the shot at some point in the future for further
processing. But, I rarely see Mark these days, so I wanted to be sure
to
get at least one shot of him.

Pentax dealers in the Bay Area?

2013-06-13 Thread Bipin Gupta
There is one more in San Mateo, Kaufmann Cameras on W 25th Ave, just
off Al Camino Real.
http://kaufmannscameras.com/

A pretty good store and very kindly old folks. I used to live some
half a mile away near the Safeway Supermarket. Bought lots of old
stuff from them.
They store a lot of Canikon stuff, and plenty of good Pentax used gear.
But nothing to beat the on-line prices, sad to say, for these Mom & Pop Stores.
Regards.
Bipin - from that far away enchanting land.

I happened to be around a couple of non-photographers at the time, both
