And suggestions from UK PDML people for activities/events will be

 Excellent!

Any excuse to visit the drunks and pubs in Greenwich is good for me :)

There are no drunks in Greenwich.

A trip on the cable car is quite good fun, especially if there's a bit of snow
around, but not enough to stop it running.

Hello, wise people of PDML :-).

I have an idea/question. Say, in LightRoom Library module I set up a filter
and see some pics. I sort them some, mark them some, etc. Then I decide to
set up another filter, may be from different folder, may be from different
parameters... I sort some more pics and so on.

Is there a way in which I can easily go back to my previous filter (state of

Are the plugins/addons that facilitate such convenience?

 Thanks.

(with its mere 12 MP APS-C sensor) that suits all the rest of my
 photographic needs with flying color.

However, once K-5 expires, which unfortunately eventually it will have to, I
will review the market. At that time, I expect to be buying a full frame
camera. Why? Just because I want one and just because I can afford it,
 internet articles be damned.

Did the last k5* firmware update fix the Video codec issue? (and conversion script)

2013-11-01 Thread Igor Roshchin

As some knowledgeable PDMLers pointed out to me a few months ago,
all K5s (at least as of release of K5 II*) had a bug related to the
FFMPEG audio codec which resulted in a clicking noise once uploaded
to Youtube (or, possibly played in some players).
http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2013-July/353117.html

This forces me convert videos before I upload them to Youtube, which
is a PITA, and takes considerable amount of time.

So, my question is whether any changes to the codec were made in the
recent firmware updates?
My guess is no, and I just don't feel like testing it, but I thought
maybe somebody already tested it.

BTW, in case it is useful for anybody, my solution for the conversion
before uploading to youtube is this .bat script in Windows, using
Avidemux v.2.6.4. I copy this script to the folder where my videos are,
and it creates a subfolder UPLOAD, where it saves the new videos
with the -upload added to the file name.
Along the way, I recode the audio and the video, compressing them
to minimize the time it takes for the upload.
(I am not making Hi-Fi movies, so, that's OK for my purposes.)
This might not be the best combination of codecs, but it took me some
time to play with those to make sure they work with Youtube.

 8--

set avidemux=C:\Program Files\Avidemux 2.6\avidemux_cli.exe
set videocodec=XVID4
set audiocodec=LavAAC
mkdir UPLOAD

for /r %%f in (*.AVI) do %avidemux% --load %%f --video-codec
%videocodec% --audio-codec %audiocodec% --output-format AVI --save
UPLOAD\%%~nf-upload.avi --quit

-- 8==

Re: Question about finding Missing folder in LR

2013-11-01 Thread Igor Roshchin

Boris,

Thank you, that was a good idea!

It allowed me to have both drives available at the same time.

Just in case somebody else might be in a similar situation, here is what
I did.
In windows, using Computer Management - Storage - Disk Management,
changed the drive letter of my external USB drive to a different one
P: in my case.
(This MS article tells you how to do that in case you don't know:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/change-add-or-remove-a-drive-letter
 )

Then I did (in the command prompt):
subst G: P:\
subst F: P:\

Now, I open LR, and I have both G: and F: with the folder Photos-2013
in it. Now I point to it, right-click, and choose Update Folder
Location, and then choose the same folder (Photos-2013) on P: .
No physical file moving is involved in this process, - so it happens
quickly.
Now, I have everything consolidated on one drive, that from now on will
always be attached as P: .
(Note that G: - Photos-2013 and F: - Photos-2013 disappeared from
Folders)

After that I remove the duplicate drives in the command prompt:
subst G: /D
subst F: /D

Best regards,

Igor

K-3 functions - tidbits from the manual

2013-11-01 Thread Stan Halpin
I've been studying the (pdf) K-3 manual supplied by Darren a few days ago.

Items that caught my eye:

p21 As an element in E-Dial Programming, it is now possible to change dial
direction from the default. Create your own logic for whether a
rightward/leftward turn of theFront/Rear dials will increase or decrease EV.

p35 When in LV, the OK button is used rather than Info button to zoom into the
view.

p45 Three (3!) AF modes: AF-S, AF-C, and (drum roll please) AF-A which
automagically switches between AF-S and AF-C depending on what is going on in
front of the camera. Barely defined, not explained in any detail; I'll be
intrigued to see how this works.

p59 Lens distortion correction for the 31/43/77 Limiteds and FA-era lenses.

p61 Eye-Fi wireless transfer is Auto, Select, or Off. Flucard wireless
transfer is On of Off. For any further information about the Flucard operation,
see the Flucard manual.

p65 The HDMI output port can be used during Liveview as well as Playback.

p73 One of the functions that can be assigned to the Fx button is SR On/Off.
For those that still miss the switch on nthe back of the camera.

p82 The in-camera HDR is a 3-exposure process, selectable range. If you select
that option, you can't use flash, mirror lockup, the AA filter simulator, and a
couple of other functions. of other functions.

p87 Simple Navigation is no longer available when using O-GPS1

Oh, and back on p46, details on AF modes, the AF-in-Liveview has a setting
labeled Focus Tracking. The table showing options when using AF while
composing via the viewfinder talks about setting different sensitivity levels,
how many adjacent AF points to activate if the subject moves off the selected
AF point. I think they must be talking about Focus Tracking but don't use the
term.

Nice one, Jack. Really sharp around the eye and the background suits
it as well.

This is sort of large gallery of Fall 2013. Taken mostly with K-5
some with M4/3. Micro 4/3 Pentax mount lens.

If you have time I would love any CC you might have.

I agree with Bob - really need to see a more concise set.

I like the idea in No 2 - presumably vertical movement of the camera
during exposure - although the white fence is distracting.

No. 62 is appealing as well.

Re: Question about finding Missing folder in LR

2013-11-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termsv/g/volume-label.htm

I'm not a Windows user, but that page seems to give the basic info required.

A volume label is a higher level file system construct than a drive letter and
persists even if the drive letter changes. Once you set volume labels for your
system, start LR. It will pick them up and display them in the Folders panel.
Once a volume label is in use, LR uses that instead of a drive letter because
file system calls to a volume label are translated by the OS to the underlying
current hardware letter identifier.

 Godfrey,

How would I do that on Windows?
Once I import the photos from the HDD, LR (at least up to ver. 3.4)
sets that the photos are on a particular HDD, with a specific drive letter.
I was not able to find how I can disentangle from that.

Pretty short on details but it's interesting that the dispute (whatever it
was) only applied to Pentax branded products.

My reading between the lines:

The first on-the-street digital I can vaguely recall was a Kodak/Nikon
co-development. I assume that as one of the firsts, Kodak garnered many
fundamental patents on digital capture. Others presumably have been licensing
those. Including Pentax. Hoya then apparently picked up the ball and continued
the Pentax-related patent licenses from Kodak. Ricoh neglected to continue the
Pentax-related licensing arrangement with Kodak (maybe assuming that their
existing arrangements vis a vis Ricoh products would cover them?) and got
caught out.

Thanks Brian. To be clear, no photoshopping of any sort was used on the
image. A square crop, some levels adjustment etc, but the monster is as I shot
him. Serendipity is a wonderful thing.
