That set is missing one of these images:

I used to work with a lab technician from whom I heard about that old
story about B-25 in 1945.
I forgot, - either his cousin or uncle saw this on the street in NYC himself.

That is very nicely timed and the light is excellent. I used to photograph
ducks quite often and I don't think I ever got anything like that. My excuse
is that film cost money back then :)

Re: PESO Celebrating Spring

2014-03-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
In regard to the droplets, I think what you’re seeing is refracted light. The
light angle is far from ideal here. It’s coming around from the front and
slightly to the rear. Passing through the droplets creates some color here and
there. Could be a bit of fringing but I don’t think so. Here’s an enlargement
of the area:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17714813&size=lg

This is far from a perfect shot. It’s handheld at 350mm and the duck was on the
move. To make matters worse, I screwed it up. Had the exposure comp set at -7
from something I shot the other day and forgot to change it, so I had to push
the exposure about a stop in conversion. That’s never idea of course. The eye
is partly in shadow and not absolutely sharp, although it’s decent considering.
I think the critters eye is just a black ball. Don’t believe there’s more
detail there to be had, but I could be wrong. Here’s an enlargement:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17714813&size=lg

Back then, every good goalkeeper was called Parkes. Apart from Gary Sprake,

 Hi all

I know the AF of Canon and Nikon are quite fast leaving us Pentaxians
hunting and pecking our way through landscapes and soccer photos, BUT,
2-3 seconds to lock on and focus on a static object.?? Me thinks
 that's a bit to slow.
The salesman and i played with it for 10-15 minutes. It did get a tad
faster to focus but it was still painfully slow. I know it will not be
as snappy as my Nikon 70-200 f2,9 VR lens, you can barely hear
anything and it locks on faster than Mike Johnson deleting a cat
 photo.

So, am i missing something with this SDM system. Is it painfully slow
or should it be as fast or faster to AF on a subject as the screw
focus lenses. Do i need to adjust a menu setting or something.

Another is on order for Saturday

Hi Team,

Just thought that I would mention that I managed to shoot 1578 shots on the
one battery last night, there was still some power left in the grip battery
and the body battery was unused.

That's shooting with the rear screen off, top LCD illumination off, single
point AF on the back button and JPG + RAW on a 64GB/95MB/s card. Not too
bad.

Cheers,

FS: To pay for Enablement ;)

2014-03-21 Thread Darren Addy
First the enablement part... Found a good deal on what will be my
first real astrophotography imaging (and visual) scope: An Orion ED80T
CF (Carbon Fiber tube). It is a highly regarded scope for the money
and the used one I found comes with the matching field flattener which
helps out the performance in the corners. It is a 480mm focal length
f/6 design and highly color-corrected. It could be used terrestially
also, I think. The optical tube only weighs 5.5 lbs, which is great
since my equatorial mount is only rated for 20 lbs and I will probably
have a home made guidescope to mount along with the DSLR (or K-01).

So, since I put this on a credit card, I now need to get it paid for.
;)

FS List (WORLDWIDE):
Will calculate and charge actual shipping to your address. Email me
for a quote. Happy to ship worldwide to PDML-ers.

Pentax-A 135mm f2.8 A highly regarded prime, with good reason. Built
in hood and easy "A" usage on Pentax DSLRs. This one is cosmetically
in the best condition of any I have seen. I'd grade it as
(conservatively) EXC. Includes both caps... $229

Scarce: Macro-Takumar Preset 50mm f4 (1:1) When you are lucky enough
to find one of these they can be pretty beat up cosmetically. This one
is beautiful. It comes with original caps and the green velvet lined
original Asahi case, which I don't think it has been out of a whole
lot in its life. Condition trumps rarity, but this one has BOTH going
for it. A highly regarded lens you'll be proud to have in your stable,
for a relative pittance $199

Minolta Maxxum 24mm f2.8 AF lens with caps and case. Works (as you
know) natively on Sony Alpha mount.$219

Very clean Minolta SRT101 with the MC Rokkor 58mm f1.4. Includes
original front metal cap and case which is in very decent shape (and
probably why the camera is so clean) $95

Beautiful working LUNA PRO F meter in case with strap. This is a
highly sensitive meter and accepts specialized attachments, including
one for spot usage (not included, but available on the used market).
I'll probably kick myself for letting this go $75

Subject: OT: Eagle Cam

A very popular pastime here in the most heavily populated state of the
US is watching our new eagles being born each year.

Eagle Cam focuses on 3 eggs ready to hatch at Duke Farms

March 19, 2014
original

HILLSBOROUGH — Spring is the season for new life and you, along with
8½ million others, can witness the marvel of birth through Duke Farms’
Eagle Cam.

The webcam focuses on a bald eagles’ nest perched 80 feet in a
sycamore tree on the 2,000-acre property that has been preserved as
center for environmental stewardship. The web cam is located higher in
the sycamore tree and though it can be operated remotely, it is mostly
pointed down to give a birds-eye view of the nest.

There are now three eggs in the nest. The eggs were laid at 3:55 p.m.
Feb. 17, 3 p.m. Feb. 20 and 4:45 p.m. Feb. 23. With a gestation time
of about five weeks, the time for the eggs to hatch is fast
approaching. The first hatch date could be March 24.

“So far, so good,” said Nora Wagner, director of public programs at
Duke Farms. You may see the progress yourself by going to
MyCentralJersey.com.

Since the eagle nest was discovered in the fall of 2004, 18 eagle
chicks have been hatched and fledged — growing feathers large enough
to fly — at Duke Farms. Fledging usually takes 10 to 12 weeks, Wagner
said

The webcam first was installed in 2008 and began transmitting video in
March 2008. Since then, Wagner understated, “it’s gotten pretty
popular.”

As of Tuesday, the Eagle Cam, Wagner said, had close to 8½ million viewers.

Duke Farms and the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey have
created lesson plans for students in schools along the East Coast to
learn about the habits of the country’s national bird. For example,
the mother and father share incubation duties, though the mother
spends more time with the eggs.

Most of the time, the webcam captures nothing more exciting than an
adult eagle protecting the eggs and keeping them warm. When the eggs
hatch, suddenly the nest becomes busy with activity until the chicks
grow their wings.

But occasionally there is drama. In one of the more harrowing scenes
captured by the webcam, on March 24, 2013 a red-tailed hawk swooped
down on the nest but was killed by one of the adult eagles, who then
feeds the hawk’s remains to a chick. The webcam captured every second
of the life-and-death drama.

An eagles’ nest was first discovered at Duke Farms in 2004. But in
2012, Hurricane Sandy’s 90-mph winds tore the top off the upper half
of the nest tree, destroying the nest.

But like many New Jersey families whose homes were destroyed in the
storm, the eagles returned to Duke Farms and built a new nest in the
sycamore about 100 feet from the first nest two months after the
storm. The camera was moved to the new nest tree in the fall of 2013.

There are now 96 pairs of eagles incubating in New Jersey, according
to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation.

Re: OT, photos of low level flying

2014-03-21 Thread Alan C
Thanks for that, Larry. Really enjoyed it. The SAAF flew Shackletons on
coastal patrol missions until quite recently. They have all been pensioned
off now. One had to land in the Sahara en route to a festival in the UK &
was never recovered. All the SAAF Harvard trainers were either scrapped or
sold privately. They had a lot. The private ones still participate at air
shows. I remember driving on a rural road not far south of Phalaborwa some
years ago when a couple of Canberras gave us a hell of a fright when they
shot past only about 100m away in a valley to our right! The SAAF has no
flying Spitfires left. They restored a few but they all subsequently
crashed.
