FSF: Sigma 30mm f1.4, Fujifilm X-E1, K20D, FA 28-70mm F4 AL

2014-04-04 Thread Tim Bray
There’s good stuff sitting unloved in the cupboard, and an upgrade
opportunity, so...

The prices are wild-ass guesses based on looking at EBay. Is EBay
still a thing? If I’m asking for too much my feelings totally won’t
be hurt if you say so, or just offer less. If I’m asking for too
little... well you got lucky I suppose.

Payment by Paypal or in Bitcoin (seriously).

1. Sigma 30mm F1.4.
STORY: Start at http://goo.gl/QnDsO - here’s a show-off piece:
http://goo.gl/f584P7
WHY? I only use Pentax for long-lens work these days. The Fujinon 35mm
f1.4 fills the same gap at a third the size/weight, and the Sigma is
just too good to sit in a closet.
COMES WITH: Everything, including the nifty Sigma soft-side lens
carrier, hood, cap, etc.
CONDITION: Hunky dory.
$$$: US$240 + shipping

2. Fujifilm X-E1 (black on black, no silver, looks like a rangefinder)
 with Soviet Helios 58mm.
STORY: You’ve probably seen the hype on the Fujifilm X-cams. My love
letter’s at http://goo.gl/WvenmD - also the photos I took in March of
2013, of Tokyo and The Big Island, are mostly this camera:
http://goo.gl/D78m0Q
WHY? I lust after this year’s model, the X-T1.
COMES WITH: Original box, charger, USB cable, etc. I only have two
Fujinon lenses and I love both, you can’t have ’em. You can buy a
K-adapter and put your Pentax glass on, it works fine albeit manual.
But so you don’t start naked, I’ll toss in a Soviet-made “Helios
44-2” 58mm F/2.0, which I bought (disclosure: CHEAP) because it’s
supposed to have stars in its bokeh. I never got the stars, but the
lens can do good things, for example http://goo.gl/yP32iv which also
has an adorable pic of the camera with Soviet lens installed (but you
don’t get the Luma Cinch, just the stock Fuji strap).
CONDITION: Recent shots at http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/What/Arts/Photos/
$$$: US$325 + shipping

3. K20D.
STORY: My backup when the K-5 was my everyday camera.
COMES WITH: Nothin’, just the basic body/charger/strap. But, nicely
packed up for shipping, with manuals & so on, in a K-5 box, which fits
it perfectly.
CONDITION: Has always worked fine but I haven’t used it much since 2011.
$$$: US$175 + shipping (They seem to be selling for more than that on
EBay, which seems crazy).

4. FA 28-70mm F4 AL.
STORY: I’d forgotten I had this until I went poking around in the
cupboard for the K20. This lens was one of the reasons I got into
Pentax digital, my wife & I had both shot Pentax film before we met,
and thus had film-era lenses sitting around. (The other is a 50mm F2
but you can’t have it.) This is from the early 90s I think. I used it
a lot on the *ist D, here are a few pix: http://goo.gl/S2UzuW
http://goo.gl/A1CKWp http://goo.gl/Vnwvhh
WHY? For the K-5 I have the 50-135 and for the Fuji I have the 18-55.
CONDITION: Looks fine. Stuck it on the K-5 today and it auto-focused.
COMES WITH: Front & back caps and a Hoya Skylight (1B) filter. I
don’t have a case, you’ll get it in a shipping box with bubble wrap.
$$$: US$75 + shipping.

Re: New 645D?

2014-04-04 Thread Darren Addy
More good signs that, under Ricoh, Pentax has a better marketing
department than they did under Hoya. I thought it was really lame when
they called it the 645D 2014 (which would be dated as soon as 2015
rolls around. That haD all the originality of Windows 98). I knew they
just COULDN'T keep that name. But waiting until now to reveal the true
name creates another little wave of buzz.

So do you think it is going to be 645Z or 645Dz or 645dZ?

It is also a tip of the cap to previous Pentax naming conventions,
like the p-Z1. Maybe they will use a hyphen.

I am really curious to see what this camera's video capabilities are.
I'm not a videographer, but if this thing could do extended video
filming on a medium format chip it could be a very serious tool for
the money to videographers. I fear that this is going to suffer from
the same overheating problems after so many minutes that the DSLRs do,
without auxillary cooling - which would have driven up the price.

I think that this camera could benefit from being designed with a
removable back that would give you two back options:
1) that contains the standard LCD screen
2) a thicker one that incorporates sensor cooling AND the LCD
If it snapped on and off like the old film backs, then people could
buy one or both backs, depending upon their needs. The cooling back
would also be terrific for astrophotographers. A LOT of serious
astrophotographers used Pentax 6x7, back in the day and many of them
spend big bucks.

Sheer joy?

I thought that the idea was:

- an artist must suffer for his art
- shooting film is suffering
- therefore ...

And of course that "the hipsters" love shooting film.

Rosco sells a Color Effects kit with about 20-odd gel sheets in it,
mainly for stage lighting. They also sell a color compensation kit for
shifting colour temp to deal with CT matching or creating effects like
night light in the daytime. I have the Color Effects kit and the best
thing is the sheets are so large you can cut dozens of flash-sized
strips from them.

I used to use the velcro doohickeys -- I have two FXtra kits from
Lumiquest -- but lately I just use archival art mounting tape to stick
gels to the flashes; reusable, no residue, and lower profile to fit
under the white plastic diffuser dome when needed.

The Strobist wrote an article on attaching gels to various strobes and
modifiers.
http://strobist.blogspot.ca/2013/01/how-to-gelling-large-light-sources.html

I used two cucoloris' and two gels, red and blue, on two flashes (L &
R) on the background behind some tulips to get this effect ...

Re: colored strobes

2014-04-04 Thread Paul
Back when I had a studio I used these plastic clips to hold gels. Can't
remember where I got them - it's 20 some years ago - but I suspect an
office supply store or craft store might have something similar.
They're stick-on so should be removable if the need arises.

pick up some sheets of colored gel to get a bit more variety, but I’m
interested in suggestions for ways of mounting gels, or getting other
interesting effects when using lights on the background.

Larry

At school we used a low residue masking tape to attach the gels to
whatever holder we were using. With hot-lights & studio strobes having
strong modeling lights you had to make sure the gel didn't get to close
to the light. Taping to the front of the reflector usually worked for that.

You can make cardboard cut-outs of patterns to use as a scrim & shoot the
gelled strobe through it.

OK. That helps. It's all still kind of deranged on this end.

PDML messages are appearing in my Yahoo account via POP3. But I cannot
reach Yahoo's SMTP server. In the meantime, I can apparently post to
PDML from my new subscription via RoadRunner, but the only PDML messages
showing up in my inbox so far are my own messages echoing back to me.

So, I can't unsubscribe from Yahoo yet, nor cancel my Yahoo Plus
account. Which I *DO* intend to do real soon. I'm not getting what I'm
paying for, and there is no way to contact Yahoo for help.

Looks like I'm going to have to find an email host that does POP3/SMTP
*AND* has an actual help desk for when things go wrong.

As Steve noted, interesting how similar these are to the North

Perhaps Adequate Groceries, or Tolerable Menswear.

I was struck by how much the parking lot supports resemble a field of
grave markers. Maybe you could make these out to be in commemoration
of the small local businesses that will die after this is up for a
couple of years.

I thought that the idea was:

And of course that "the hipsters" love shooting film.

OT - Expected to work for free -- not limited to photographers

2014-04-04 Thread Igor Roshchin

Similar to what we've seen in a recent thread,
here is a snap from Craigslist about musicians expected to play for
free:
http://goo.gl/UzCXJx

That makes me think the argument about availability of cameras
as the main explanation why people expect photographers to work for free
is not quite correct.
The main reason is HUMAN nature.

Pentax Spotmatic F issue

The mirror currently locks up. I’ve been told its the bump stop.
I’m wondering who people have fixed this and if anyone has photos of what the
inside of the camera (bumpstop in particular) should look like?

Re: Pentax Spotmatic F issue

2014-04-04 Thread Darren Addy
Hi Callum,
The "bump stop" is the rubber that surrounds the focusing screen. When
you take the lens off you will see it at the top. They like to
deteriorate and go all gooey in time. If your mirror is sticking there
you will probably see evidence of the goo around the edges of the
mirror itself .

When this happens, the same thing is likely happening to the seals
that engage the film door (bits sticking to the door edges that engage
the slots in the body where the seals reside.

There is a guy in the U.S. that sells seal kits (very reasonably). He
used to sell on eBay but gave that up due to too many run-ins with
fraud, etc. But he still sells the kits. They come with all the
instructions for doing the replacement yourself. His email is:
jon_good...@yahoo.com

Hope that helps!

Darren
