They've been getting steadily worse here. I've evicted a couple of them

September PUG - Some Guidelines

2014-08-09 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

There may be a bit of confusion about the September PUG (judging by a
submission that's just arrived), so here's how it is supposed to work:

The theme is 'Random Exhibition Title Generator' and it's based around
the following website:

http://www.mit.edu/~ruchill/lazycurator.html

If you go there and hit the 'Curate Me' button, you will be presented
with a suggested title for an artistic exhibition in the garbled
language beloved by Exhibition curators (apologies if that includes
anyone here - no offence intended...)

The idea is to hit the 'Curate Me' button a number of times until you
find a title that fits an image you can make (or have buried in your
archives).

Is that clear?

Oh...

Anyway, as usual submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

I've modified the submission form slightly - you must include the
generated exhibition title in your submission.

Other Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

* Nominal closing date: 30 September.

Re: PESO: Bluebird of Happiness

2014-08-09 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Maybe its the happiness of Bluebird - looks like a cozy home

ann

On 8/9/2014 01:57, Daniel J. Matyola wrote:

The bluebird of happiness flew up my, ah, nose.

For decades, I had kept a number of bird feeders in our back yard, as
many as eight at a time. For much of that time, I recorded my
visitors under a program run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I
really enjoyed watching the birds enjoying my feeders.

In recent years, however, the deer and squirrels attracted by the bird
feeders have become a bigger and bigger problem. We also had
occasional visits by racoons and black bear, which were very
destructive, not to mention dangerous.

Three years ago we got a new puppy, and we have been trying very hard
to train him to stay in our yard, so he could tun free, at least in
that acre or so. The deer and other critters attracted by the bird
feeders became a major nuisance, so very reluctantly I decided to give
them up.

The lack of bird feeders the last couple of years has greatly reduced
the number of deer and squirrels in our yard, and made it a lot easier
for our Malamute to enjoy playing in the yard. There has been a
surprising side effect, however; there are a lot more birds nesting
in our yard than before. I suspect that the more aggressive birds
attracted by the bird feeders, like blue jays, cardinals, starlings,
grackles and crows, had been intimidating smaller birds and
discouraging them from nesting in our yard. Last year we had two bird
houses that were occupied with small birds. This year, we had five
occupied bird houses, plus a nest in a tree and one on one of the
floodlights on my house. Better yet, for the first time in decades,
we have bluebirds nesting in two of our bird houses.

One of the bluebird houses is on the edge of the woods, and I see the
birds infrequently. The other is close to the house, however, and we
see them several times a day, often when we are at the pool or in the
hot tub, which is quite close to the house.

I have, of course, been trying to capture some images of the
bluebirds, with little success. They are quite shy, and disappear as
soon as they see my camera. (How do they know what I'm up to?) Even
when I manage to sneak up on them, they are so quick in and out of the
house that there have been very few opportunities.

This weekend, I decided to give it yet another try. I set the tripod
up on the deck, but they saw me and kept hidden. After an hour of no
sightings since I brought out the camera and tripod, I gave up. As I
was putting my gear away, I had an idea: They don't seem to mind us
when we are in the hot tub, so why don't I try hiding behind the hot
tub, resting the camera on the cover? I knelt behind the hot tub and
set up the camera. after a few minutes, the female flew out of the
house, and back in a few minutes later, but she was too quick.
Besides, I couldn't get in a position to focus properly through the
view finder or even the LCD. I pre-focused on the surface of the bird
house, and waited, with my finger on the shutter release and the
camera set on multiple images.

After about 20 minutes, my back was aching, but suddenly the male put
in an appearance. I fired off several rapid-fire shots, and then
tried to follow him when he rested in a tree and then on the top of
the dog run.

I wasn't able to get a good sharp image of the male, so I plan to try
again this weekend. This is the best I have been able to manage so
far:

Matisse Moment

2014-08-09 Thread Bob W-PDML
I went to the exhibition of Matisse Cutouts at Tate Modern today - I recommend
it very highly.

Among the exhibits are the original maquettes for a number of book covers,
including this one, which you may recognise:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=439D213A93634DD4!11773&authkey=!AA0CPkEq4t_hq-o&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

Sorry about the long link - i took the picture with my iPhone and they all get
backed up by MS Onedrive, which makes it easy for me to share, but generates
these horrible links.

Re: Empire Parliamentary Delegation to Australia, 1926

2014-08-09 Thread David Mann
Depends on your definition of fun ;)

I had to rescan about half of them because the preview on my scanner software
was lying to me about the RGB values when I had to use negative values in the
exposure slider. Then there were the Dufaycolor ones.

The photos themselves are fascinating though.

Re: Trouble with uploading books from LR 5.6. to Blurb

2014-08-09 Thread Christine Aguila
I feel your frustration, Boris. The sad truth is if you want internet speed
you have to pay for it. My old Earthlink account had a download speed of 5
MBPs, and I can only imagine what the upload speed was. In switching to
Comcast Xfinity, I now get download speeds of nearly 58 MBPs ( just did a test:
57.62) and upload speeds of nearly 12 MBPs (test 11.70).

These speeds have changed dramatically my computer/internet experience. In
the last month, I have uploaded blurb books made via Lightroom—big ones—13x11
inches with 100+ pages—and the upload time was super fast, under 20-25 minutes.
I even made a little 7 x 7 blurb book via Lightroom on my laptop and uploaded
it via wireless, and that took 15 minutes, though the book length was 48 pages,
and I was in the same room as my router at the time of upload.

No doubt at some point I may run in to a Lightroom/Blurb server glitch, but so
far so good.

Cheers, Christine

Darren's old photo find has finally spurred me into action...

Back in February I scanned a box of old glass slides (B&W positives sandwiched
in glass) from the Empire Parliamentary Delegation to Australia in 1926. My
mother-in-law had asked me if I could do anything with them and I managed to rig
something up with my medium format film scanner (Minolta Multi Pro). The slides
are a strange size - about 83mm square with an image up to 70mm square (usually
masked with a border).

There are a handful of colour photos mixed in there which are not part of the
Australia collection; those are Dufaycolor slides which are fascinating under a
microscope but utterly horrible to scan. It looks like those ones were taken
in NZ.

I was wanting to put them online but with 72 files I wasn't really sure how
best to present them. In the end I've taken a lazy approach and thrown them
into a jAlbum gallery. The photos are presented in the order they were stored
in the box.

Note I haven't done anything about dust.

http://www.multi.net.nz/empire/

The photo captions are mostly what's written on the slides, except for the
number which is their position in the box. They might not be correct; being
handwritten and quite small they're difficult to read. A book accompanies the
slides but it's packed in a box somewhere. If it contains more info I'll
update the gallery.

Cheers,
Dave

Far from all of the local companies. There is a company out here
called Verizon, which grew out of Bell Atlantic, which in turn grew
out of Jersey Bell, New York Telephone and other local phone companies
in the east. It is now one of the biggest in both mobile and land
line telephone service. Verizon also took over most of the huge
corporate offices that the old AT&T built in central New Jersey. At
that time, the "new AT&T" acquired "Golden Boy," the iconic statue
that stood for years outside the AT&T headquarters in NYC, and moved
it from Bedminster, New Jersey to Dallas, but that is about the only
piece of the old AT&T corporate structure that the new "AT&T" can
claim.

At
that time, the "new AT&T" acquired "Golden Boy," the iconic statue
that stood for years outside the AT&T headquarters in NYC, and moved
it from Bedminster, New Jersey to Dallas, but that is about the only
piece of the old AT&T corporate structure that the new "AT&T" can
claim.

Re: PESO Sign of the times.

2014-08-09 Thread P.J. Alling
The AT&T name was purchased by Southern Bell Company, which if you do a
little checking you'll find has also purchased pretty much all of the
local operating companies that were spun off by AT&T, and a few that
were always at least semi independent, such as SNET, making it fitting
and yet sad that they adopted their erstwhile parent's name when they
absorbed them. SBC by the way had one of the worst reputations amongst
those 7 spun off companies and really had to change their name, to
protect the guilty. And yes SBC now AT&T still owns pay phones
including that one if the plate on the front is any indicator.

Regarding the corporate giant in the background, coffee and free rest

which corporate giant owns the object in the foreground. Ma Bell was
dissolved years ago, and I doubt the inept wireless carrier that
purchased their name and logo owns any pay phones, even defunct ones.

Re: PESO: Bluebird of Happiness

2014-08-09 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Alan.

I can sneak up on some of the birds, but the bluebirds are the wariest
and the most alert. They are, of course, also the most beautiful
birds we see in this part of the world on a regular basis. (They are
also a great help in keeping down the flying insect population.)

My longest lens is also a 300mm. (Actually, I have a 500mm f8
reflector lens with a screw mount that I could use with an adapter,
but the quality is not great and the bokeh very distracting.) I think
I need to go out in stronger light, although of course the birds are
most active at dawn and dusk. I guess the other option is to use high
ISO, but that also has its drawbacks.

This is the best I have been able to manage so
far:

Re: PESO Sign of the times.

2014-08-09 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Interesting composition there.

Pay phone? What's a pay phone?

Regarding the corporate giant in the background, coffee and free rest
rooms is the only reason I would darken their doors. I can't tell
which corporate giant owns the object in the foreground. Ma Bell was
dissolved years ago, and I doubt the inept wireless carrier that
purchased their name and logo owns any pay phones, even defunct ones.

Re: PESO: Bluebird of Happiness

2014-08-09 Thread Alan C

Dan, I really enjoyed reading your tale. I have only 1 bird feeder which is
quite enough for my budget - they guzzle about 1Kg/day. I hate to think how
much seed you were going through. I haven't seen any small animals or large
aggressive birds at the feeder yet. We have a lot of species nesting in our
yard & the adjoining parkland including those I have seen at the feeder. I
find I can easily sneak up on them behind larger foliage but it is much more
difficult in the park. I have considered a portable hide (the type with a
built in chair) but haven't bought one yet. A longer lens (500-600) would
help a lot too but for the moment the 300 will have to do.

Have a look at this site - a lot of useful info there.

Subject: PESO: Bluebird of Happiness

This is the best I have been able to manage so
far:
