On 31/8/14, Brian Walters, discombobulated, unleashed: I don't have a problem with videos when they're obviously the right tool for the job, but more and more I keep coming across video tutorials on things like Photoshop or Lightroom which I think would be far more useful with a bit of text and some screen grabs. I find it much more difficult to follow along with a video presentation than with a well written descriptive article. Interesting point. A few years ago I needed to learn how to use DVD Studio Pro properly and considered the alternatives. After much thought I opted for a series of video tutorials - the kind with active screen in vision using a teacher's voice-over. This allowed me to pause or even replay any section, and crucially I was able to make my own notes on paper much as I would if in a classroom. Personally I find this much more useful than actually having the official provided text in front of me. Others may differ. In some cases I prefer to have the reference text, depends on the subject and how well I know it. In most cases what I am particularly interested in is workflow relevant to my interest rather than all the possible workflows that can be achieved. This isn't to say that this can't be achieved by the written word - far from it! But in this case the video was my preferred option, and I'm glad I did it -well worth the money (Lynda.com) and I was able to achieve my own workflow very quickly in authoring DVDs for my clients. YMMV :-) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Mark, Just in case, - I just saw that there is a $200 rebate for 3880, and it is ending today, August 31. I don't know how it is with Epson, - it might mean that there will be yet a lower price or a different rebate in September... But in any case, - it looks like BH has that rebate, and their price is lower than at other places: $1139, and the rebate is applicable. (double check it yourself though.) When I went to fire up the print last month the photo black was also empty then - though then as now it shows nearly full on the printers usage gauge. My guess is that the PK ink is slowly draining into the maintenance tray when the printer is idle. I'm thinking about replacing this with a 3880, basically the same printer but with the updated K3 inks (vivid magenta). Is anyone here using the 3880 now? Any comments on it? I have found that the 3800 has met my relatively low volume needs for the past 6 or 7 years, with my only complaint being that it is a little flimsy on the build quality. If the 3880 is the same that would be OK. Does anyone know if the 3880 can use the same ink cartridges as the 3800? The ones I have in the 3800 are all 80% full or more and I have 8 new cartridges on hand - all tolled that is almost $1,000 worth of ink. I may be able to sell the sealed cartridges but am sure I could not sell the ones installed in the printer now. Looking on the web it appears the the two printers can use the same cartridges but if that is the case, where do the upgraded K3 inks come into play with the 3880? Thanks Attila. No tripod. Although it would enable slightly better portrait-type shots, a tripod is an encumbrance for this type of shooting IMO. Actually, the research is waiting to be done, but a lot of people (including me) think we are producing generations with better writing skills than in the last few centuries. For many generations, the only thing anyone wrote in a typical life was book reviews in school, reports for their boss, and maybe some letters. Since some time in the nineties, a high proportion of communication, in particular young people’s communication, has been in writing. Re: OT: n Smartphone Photography Hacks
If you compare the writing, in the letters home, from the average Civil war soldier, to the writing capability of the average J school graduate, from the last 20 years, it's plain we have been raising a couple of generations of illiterates. It's only gotten worse. Hell I had to look up how to spell soldier, and my writing style on this list is especially sloppy. I used to be regularly published by a newspaper, that just 10 years before I contributed to them, would have looked st a sample of my writing, and laughed me out of their office. But, that's just me. Most of the literate and I do mean literate in the 19th century had no more than a 6th grand education, yet, they wrote and understood, at what today would be College and post graduate levels. You don't need research to know that, all you really need to do is read some historical documents. Besides which, you're wrong about how much writing people did until quite recently, it wasn't until after the third quarter of the 20th century that long distance telephone calls were inexpensive enough to be the regular method of keeping in touch with distant friends and relatives. Letter writing was the preferred method, the post office used to make a great deal of money on first class mail. On 8/31/2014 2:26 PM, Tim Bray wrote: Actually, the research is waiting to be done, but a lot of people (including me) think we are producing generations with better writing skills than in the last few centuries. Since some time in the nineties, a high proportion of communication, in particular young people’s communication, has been in writing. Glut of 28-35mm lenses
Recently I said that the list of lenses that I still wanted to get is shrinking rapidly. But one that I still wanted was the SMC K 30mm f2.8, a desire that Stan has fulfilled this week by putting one in the mail. I've wanted that lens particularly since seeing this stunning image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellinuxero/4547285529/ It is worth noting that this image was shot on film, so has the full 30mm FOV. Still, the cinematic look of the image - the combination of sharpness and buttery bokeh - that is what I love. There are many more delicious images produced with this lens at: http://www.flickriver.com/lenses/pentax/smcpk30mmf28/ I'm looking forward to comparing the lenses that I have in the 28-35mm range because I think I've got wy too many and I may need to thin the herd. In the autofocus department I cover that range with: DA 16-45mm f4 (middle of the range) Sigma EX 30mm f1.4 (prime) Pentax F 35-70mm (at its widest, obviously) In the manual focus department I've got: SMC K 28mm f3.5 SMC K 30mm f2.8 (coming from Stan) Flektogon 35mm f2.4 (preset... coincidentally, also from Stan) Tamron 01A 35-85mm f2.8-3.8 macro I'm always threatening to do comparison images and then never really getting around to doing a pseudo-scientific side-by-side comparison. It always seems to come down to gut feelings and how often the lens actually gets put on the camera. I'm getting closer to having my basement darkroom set up and so I may need to keep an eye on which lenses will also work on which film bodies (with no crop factor, obviously). But it appears that I have a silly amount of overlap at the 28-35mm range. -- Photographers must learn not to be ashamed to have their photographs look like photographs. ~ Alfred Stieglitz -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

When I went to fire up the print last month the photo black was also empty then - though then as now it shows nearly full on the printers usage gauge. Re: Brecon Beacons
Thanks. That small climb we did yesterday was probably more difficult for me than the climb up Sarn Helen, because of the different gearing on the bikes. On the Roberts I can drop down onto the granny ring, but the Concorde has no granny, so it's all up to me, and my pride won't let me get off and push. In one of the pictures you can see a tiny little cyclist in the distance. He, and his unseen mate, cruised past me going up that hill as if it wasn't there. They were, however, at least 30 years younger than me. B On 31 Aug 2014, at 22:10, Chris Mitchell chris.mitch...@which.net wrote: A few more hills than our trek then! Re: GESO: Lens-swapping
Oh, the manual-focus aids on the X-T1 are pure voodoo magic. You can have the basic does-it-look-sharp, or you can have focus-peaking sparklies, or you can have split-screen like Dad’s rangefinder. Or you can have dual mode, with a large-ish version of the image using focus-peaking with a little miniature split-screen image off to the side, an enlargement of the focus point. I normally use the sparklies, because they give you DoF too. Here’s how great it is: When I’m sitting at my cabin looking out over the ocean with the Tokina 400mm strapped on, as I turn the focus ring I can see the in-focus sparkly region sweep in or out across the wave-tops. Of course this only works because of the huge brilliant EVF. Which, by the way, flips the whole UI sideways when you go into portrait mode.
