Re: WesternDigital portable hard drive with SD card reader
I forget which hosting company, but recently a very large internet hosting company produced statistics on their hard drive failure rates. This company uses cheap consumer drives so the figures were interesting. Topping the list on reliability was Hitachi followed by Western Digital. This was interesting because Hitachi was long known for producing some of the most unreliable drives. It seems they have reversed this trend. I don't know if anyone remembers their deskstar aka deathstar disks that all mostly died under 6 months. That was a long time ago, but Hitachi has come a long way. I personally prefer WD drives and have had better luck with them than others, but it looks like Hitachi is now the top dog for the moment. It is better, as has been mentioned, to buy the better rated drives. If you notice some WD drives are only warrantied for 1 year. Their better drives still have 5 year warranties. That should tell you something. On Thu, Sep 4, 2014 at 1:50 AM, David Mann dmann...@gmail.com wrote: On Sep 4, 2014, at 1:06 pm, Brian Walters apathy...@lyons-ryan.org wrote: Interesting. Re: Peso:Ali's Farm
I prefer the color, sorta along the same reasoning as Paul. In the BW version, it seems that the dark tones from the green flower stems etc. in the foreground overwhelm the weathered tones of the building. In the color version OTOH the foreground seems less obtrusive. stan On Sep 4, 2014, at 11:32 AM, Jack Davis jdavi...@comcast.net wrote: Something I shot some year ago with an LX. Re: PESOs : Biking with Bob
Dropbox presents photos as a thumbnailed directory by default. If you double click on a thumbnail you get an image displayed that fills most of the browser window, with navigation controls directly below and other options in a small pictograph menu on the bottom left of the window with the file name on the bottom right. The thumbnails are very small, but they do offer a minimal gallery format for each folder. The issues are the thumbnails are very small and there is no real control of how the image appears it's just the image file displayed on a black background with the controls in while at the bottom of the screen. You can however use pretty much any gallery software that will run on the client browser to control how the image displays. I much prefer to roll my own HTML, and others use java based gallery software, but for some purposes the default works fine. But it has those safety (?) arches under the propellers. So, I am confused if it is just an add-on, or I mixed it up, and it is a completely different quadcopter? I put the the prop guards on to protect the machine if I bump into something with it. Please, report back on your experience after the first week or two, I am curious 1) how you settled on this model The DJI's are pretty much the most user friendly machines out there right now. Very simple to fly and they have all sorts of fail safes on them to keep the pilot out of trouble. The Vision 2 plus is a sideways version of the Vision 2, in that it comes with the camera built in rather than having to add it to the machine (which would be a Gopro Black right now). I did a lot of checking around and the concesus was that the DJI camera and the Gopro are of very similar imaging quality, but by the time I got the Vision 2 outfitted I would have spent several hundred dollars more than I did. The machine I bought uses a smart phone as the camera controller rather than having to buy a dedicated screen for first person view (seeing what the camera sees in real time). From what I read, the Vision 2 Plus is the lowest cost machine capable of giving professional results. The camera is 14mp/ 1080px60fps video, and seems to do good video. It's mounted to a three axis gimbal, so the machine can be pitching around quite a bit and maintain smooth video. and 2) what's your first week's experience (regrets, etc.) I've only done a few flights so far, I won't bore anyone with the videos (well, unless asked), but so far, I'm very happy with it. The only frustration with it, and I fully understand why DJI has done what they did with the software is that it doesn't fly very far when close to an airport. I live about 3lm from our local aerodrome, and in the school ground a couple of blocks from where I live, I can fly to a fifty foot altitude and 50 feet from the launch point. It's like it runs into a wall when it hits the limit. Having read a few very scary stories of quad copters being used badly, I'm not unhappy with the compromise, I do feel it is a bit more limiting than it needs to be though.. bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: WesternDigital portable hard drive with SD card reader
YMMV. The only hard-drives I've ever had fail in use were Western Digital. Especially problematic have been their MyBook external USB drives which have really, REALLY piss-poor power supplies. September PUG is up - Enjoy!!
G'day all I think this theme probably goes under the heading of it seemed like a good idea at the time. In the end, we had a bigger gallery than I expected. As usual, you'll find the gallery here: http://pug.komkon.org/ (you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there). Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery, let me know. + Next up is one that can't be put off until the last minute. Synchronicity' requires taking a photo on the date of the September Equinox, which is rapidly approaching. The actual time of the equinox will be on 22 or 23 September, depending on your locality. You can find the actual time for your locality here: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?continent=namericaiso=20140923T0229msg=September%20Equinox%202014 http://tinyurl.com/pmmh9qp The photo should be taken during a 24 hour period - 12 hours either side of the actual time of the equinox. The subject of the submitted images can be whatever you like but images taken around the areas where you all live might make the gallery a bit more interesting - but that's only a suggestion. Submit here: http://pug.komkon.org/submit/ Submission Guidelines here: http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html The main requirements are: * Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels * Max file size: 300k * Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or lens used is Pentax. * If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line. * Nominal closing date: 30 September. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: WesternDigital portable hard drive with SD card reader
Yeah, I have a 1.5tb mybook external that is 3.5, so has an external power supply. I'm pretty sure the power supply fried the board on the drive as it spins up, but refuses to be recognized by the USB bridge or connected directly to SATA. It just refused to come online one day. The mechanical parts sound rather healthy so I'm fairly confident that if I can track down a matching logic board from an identical drive everything should work again. I kind of hope so. 400gb of mp3s were living on that drive as well as quite a few other massive collections of stuff that I lost the backup drive for.
