Re: OT - PESO - Blue on Blue

2015-04-13 Thread Ann Sanfedele

It is now April 13th and I can pause and do a bit of list looking...

Do have to say that my quip was made for those who were "aspiring"
photographers - the 'I wanna be a photographer' or 'it would be cool to
be a photographer' crowd - not for those of you/us who are already
photographers - who have used film cameras and know what DOF, F-stop,
aperture , shutter speed are and -have- to record something they have

seen and have no camera with them at the time. But you knew that, right
guys?

I like your beefed up image Frank.

As others have said, it's a really nice gallery overall
My personal faves include "Wet Feet" , Marco's "personal Space"
the Old farm by Filip and Jan's Horses at Canyon de Chelly.

and of course I love the punny pan'o rama, too

G'day all

Quite a large gallery of panoramas this month - lots of landscapes, as
might be expected. My favourites are Dave's 'Wet Feet' - wonderful
light and reflections - and Stan's 'Iguazu Falls' - very dramatic, and
the rainbow doesn't hurt!

Most fun is Alan's 'Pan o' Rama 2-1'.

Jan's 'On Top of the World' brings back some pleasant memories for me
personally.

All in all, a great gallery - look for a bit of Esperanto in there as well.

Important!! The images have been resized to fit on most monitors
without needing to scroll the images - in most cases, you can click on
an image to see the full size as submitted.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Next up is 'Celebrating Autumn/Spring'.

Re: Anybody tethering a k-5ii? Plus, camera seizure bonus tale.

2015-04-13 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Christine,

As Steve wrote, all (most?) standard laptops and desktops would not have
ability for video in, only video out.

There are small stand-alone LCD monitors (5"-10") that have HDMI inputs,
and, I suspect might even work on batteries. I've seen those used
for the video work with Canikon DSLRs.

As I pointed out in another thread, this Amazon store sells parts for
building rigs that would allow mounting such monitors to a camera:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/node/index.html?&merchant=A22PRX6WI8E2K6
I am sure there are others.

I also wanted to add a caution: I've never looked or tried, but before
investing in any additional equipment, I'd check if the current Pentax
DSLR firmware allows _LIVE_ displaying via HDMI.
I know that some cameras that have HDMI connectors only allow playing
recorded videos via them, say on a TV, not live display while you are
shooting.

Finally, 2.5 years ago, I was asking for possible tethering solutions
here. I remember there were a few options I considered, but since the
immediate need disappered before I tried any of them, I don't know what
would work.
I don't remember all the details at the moment, but you can take a
look at this thread:

 https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg638081.html

Hope this helps,

Igor

Re: PESO 2015 - A Walk in Guadalupe River Park - GDG

2015-04-13 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Godfrey,

I enjoyed those images!
I didn't get to see the video, as I was on the phone, and that 250 MB
would've been a large portion of the monthly plan allowance. And then I
saw that it became unavailable.

I usually use Youtube for posting videos. It is also easy on people's
traffic even for a high-res video, and one can look a low-res version if
needed. Vimeo and Archive.org are the alternatives that are worth
considering, depending on your needs and requirements.

But I am sure you know all this.
I was just surprised why you wouldn't have used any of those.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Igor.

While I have Vimeo, YouTube, and FB accounts, I so rarely use them I don't
think of them. As more and more of my interests have to do with photo

or the other of them. :-)

It's the story and how you tell it that captures audience, not how you made the

There are small stand-alone LCD monitors (5"-10") that have HDMI inputs, and, I

with Canikon DSLRs.
As I pointed out in another thread, this Amazon store sells parts for
building rigs that would allow mounting such monitors to a camera:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/node/index.html?&merchant=A22PRX6WI8E2K6
I am sure there are others.

I also wanted to add a caution: I've never looked or tried, but before
investing in any additional equipment, I'd check if the current Pentax DSLR
firmware allows _LIVE_ displaying via HDMI.
I know that some cameras that have HDMI connectors only allow playing recorded
videos via them, say on a TV, not live display while you are shooting.

Finally, 2.5 years ago, I was asking for possible tethering solutions here. I
remember there were a few options I considered, but since the immediate need
disappered before I tried any of them, I don't know what would work.
I don't remember all the details at the moment, but you can take a look at this

Strange color output behavior in LR - totally puzzled

2015-04-13 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I encounter some rather weird behavior in LR (5.7.1), and I am totally
puzzled by it.

I have a photograph that has primarily white and orange color in it.
In Print module, I added a text-based ID plate and a text-based watermark.
For both of those, I selected orange font colors that are visually very
close to that of the photo.

1. If I "Print to: File" (withing LR Print Module dialog), then all
orange colors in the resulting JPEG appear to be similar to each other,
and if I import that JPEG back into LR and print to Epson R2880, all the
colors are similar.

2. If I "Print to: Printer" right away, the text font color is _VERY_
different from the color of the photo itself.

JPEG and the initial file - appear to be in the same color (on the
screen).
But if I print both to the same printer (and paper) with the same
otherwise settings (besides the id plate and the watermark), -
The print colors (between the printed photos in #1 and in #2) are
different.

I suspect that something might be off in the calibration conversion,
as the JPEG is in RGB, while the DNG is in Adobe RGB (but even this is a
big surprise). But what is completely puzzling is why and how the colors
of the text and the photo are different when those are printed directly to
the printer.
Also, I see this difference is present in the "Preview" that shows up when
it is enabled in the printer (R2880) "set page" dialogue.

(I should point out that the colors in the preview have ALWAYS been
royally messed up (on both Windows computers that I used with this
printer, WinXP and Windows 7, and different versions of LR, from 1 or 2
to 5 [Win7 only]), when printing from DNG files in Adobe RGB, but
prints were coming out mostly fine.)

In all these cases, I have the configurations set to disable color
management by the application and enable color control by the Printer
driver Profile.

Any guess for this weirdness?
1. Why do text and photo of visibly similar colors come out differently
in print?
2. Why do the prints from an AdobeRGB DNG and from an RGB JPEG have
different colors?

Thank you,

Igor

Re: April PUG - Panorama - Now Up

2015-04-13 Thread Darren Addy
It's a nice gallery with many wonderful images but, at the risk of
being pedantic, I must say that I feel that a large percentage of them
are not panoramas (if we are using the term in the traditional
photographic sense and not simply as a synomym of "a vista". A true
panorama results in a wide aspect ratio, but a wide aspect ratio does
not necessarily make a panorama. A panorama is created in one of two
ways:
1) by stitching together two or more exposures (ideally made by
pivoting around the lenses nodal point) that results a a Field of View
wider than would have been possible with a wide lens on the normal
film/sensor format.
2) by the use of a lens with the Field of View (and image circle) of a
larger format, used on a smaller format film/sensor. (As in a 5x7 film
capable 90mm lens being used in conjunction with a 120 film format in
the Fuji G617/GX617. Another example might be a strip of 35mm film
exposed in 6x7 camera with a 6x7 lens.

Shooting in true panorama fashion can be a real challenge, both in the
taking and the making of the image. Not so with merely cropping a
traditional image into a panorama-imitating aspect ratio. Perhaps I
was reading too much into the theme of "Panorama" and thus my
expectations are out of line. If so, I apologize. But I have a real
appreciation for real panoramas, and I was let down by a significant
percentage of the images in this gallery. That being said, I made no
submission myself, feeling that I had not made a true panorama in
quite a while.

All of that being said, my favorite images were Ken Waller's "Denali
Falls" (the only vertical image of the entire gallery and an image
that reminds me of one I took while hiking as a lad in Washington's
Olympia National Rainforest) and David Mann's "Wet Feet", which is
near perfection (and by "near" I mean "I wonder if the use of a
polarizing filter might have made it just a wee bit closer to
perfection"). Lovely images, everyone!

Re: Strange color output behavior in LR - totally puzzled

Sounds like you have a gamut problem, one or both of the colors are out
of gamut for your printer's inkset, and the direct print is at some
point in the image processing train pushing them further apart.
Converting the image to 8 bits first by saving as a jpeg is pushing them
closer together.

Why are you not using application color management instead of printer
color management? It seems that would produce more accurate color
representation. Also...what does the image look like if you enable soft
proofing in LR? Do you note the same problem?

Are you using Epson paper or some other brand? Color accuracy should be
better using software color management and the icc profile that matches
the paper you're using.
