in the other thread, this has huge implications for astrophotography.
Canon has OWNED the astrophotography market for many years even though
their cameras and sensors have been lapped by the competition... they
are all people talk about in astrophotography. If Pentax builds the
astrotrack capability into their camera (rumored for the K-3 II - and
presumably the FF) AND they do this Bayer shift, astrophotographers
will notice. It is a sizable market a particularly important one
with DSLR sales shrinking.

I hope that the astrotracer function is upgraded to work with manual
focus lenses based on the programed focal length. But, I doubt that they
will.

Built in GPS, that's good.

No more pop up flash, for me, also good to lose the flash of last
resort. I

much prefer daylight even if the ISO has to be bumped up, but then use a
dedicated flash/other lighting thereafter.

Personally, I'd rather have the flash - useful for fill-in and I can
add GPS co-ordinates in my image management software for those (few)
times I want it. But I'm probably not in the market for this camera
anyway

Pixel shifting, now that's a tricky one. As I understood it, both the
camera
and whatever was being photographed had to remain still. Not a
problem with

the camera on the tripod, but what about the subject? Or has technology
moved on again and this isn't the problem it was?

Well, the Olympus implementation of this in the E-M5ii requires a
tripod and static subject. I guess we'll have to see if Ricoh has any
tricks up its sleeve.

Not enough to swap from a K3 - although I might be tempted when they
start

selling the last ones at reduced prices ;-)

I'm probably not really interested in anything Pentax at the moment,
unless its a large sensor mirrorless with a viewfinder. Can't really
see that happening.

I really like the idea of that, and I really like the scene, the the light,
colours and the overall ambiance, but there's a couple of things that for me
mean it doesn't quite work.

First is the fact that the top of the horseshoe is lost in the background, so
it doesn't quite stand out enough; second is that the horseshoe and the
fencepost divide the frame more or less evenly and they are of different visual
weights, so the composition is unbalanced and my eye can't settle on one or the
other.

It would have been better to have the horseshoe on its own as a point against
the background; perhaps a bit closer so more detail was available, and a touch
more blur to the background.

But a lovely scene and well worth going back tomorrow in the same light, if you
can.

Re: Peso-Acacia Rd

2015-04-22 Thread Jack Davis
Well taken points. I want to say that I had nothing to do with the horseshoe's
being hung there.
Not speaking to any of your points, just feel like letting you know I didn't
decorate the scene.
The horseshoe (oddly, very thin) together with the somewhat more prominent
orchard trees, I feel balance off acceptably
with the heaver fencepost.
An element not spoken too, I was very much taken by the wheat like foreground
grasses.

Appreciate your commenting, Bob!

But a lovely scene and well worth going back tomorrow in the same light, if you
can.

Uncomfortable Truth About Photography

2015-04-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
This great little piece landed in my Inbox today from my school mate
in Canada. This could be a tribute to all us great or not so great
Photographers.
Read on folks. You will love it or hate it. The choice is
yours. But do share some feedback - either way.
Regards. Bipin.

1. It is more about equipment than we'd like to admit and smart kids.

The kid whose dad bought him a D3 and a 400mm f/2.8 lens is going to
have a better sports portfolio than you. You're talented but too
fucking cheap to provide or get top notch equipment. As a consequence,
he got all the primary shots he needed in the first five plays and
spent the next half-hour experimenting with cool angle shots and
different techniques, while you were still trying to get your fucking
cheap DSLR to lock focus quickly enough and shoot.

True, you can't pick up a pro camera, set it to P mode and instantly
turn into Ansel Adams. But if you're learning at the same pace as
everyone else and you are trying to keep up because your equipment
can't hack it, the difference will be stark, and frustrating. Remember
today’s kids are smart learners.

2. People are doing some unethical shit with RAW and nobody really
understands or cares.

Photoshopping the hell out of photos is a no no in photojournalism, we
all know this. And yet I see portfolios and award compilations come to
our desk with heavy artificial vignetting, damn-near HDR exposure
masking and contrasts with blacks so deep you could hide a body inside
them.

When I question anybody about this they say oh yeah, well I didn't do
anything in CS6, just the raw editor in Lightroom real quick so it's
okay, it's not destructive editing, the original is still there.

It's not okay.

But it doesn't seem like anybody cares. Some of the shit on the wire
services looks exactly the same so they got jobs somewhere.

That dude that got canned from The Blade for photoshopping basketballs
where there were none? He's found redemption- I remember reading an
article where some editor says oh he sends us the raw files so we
know its kosher now.

Fucking storm chasers are the worst offenders at this shit. Guess what
he does now.

3. Many times, sadly, it doesn't even matter if your photos are all
that good or not.

We are in the age of the Facebook Wedding Album. I've shot weddings
pretty much every Saturday for a decade and if there is one thing I've
learned it is the bride paradox: people hate photos of themselves even
if they are good, people love photos of themselves with people they
love even if they are bad.

And that's totally fine.

Now that many people have a DSLR, there exists an entirely new and
growing population of couples who are perfectly happy employing their
wedding guests as proxy paparazzi for everything from prep to ceremony
to formals to cake to dance. They will like their photos better than
ours, even though they won't last, they won't be able to put together
a quality album, but they really don't mind.

And nobody cares.

My buddy, an excellent photographer that chooses to shoot mediocre but
proven poses for senior portraits, yearbooks, weddings, school sports,
etc.,.. makes something like $ 70k / year in Midwest money. He's a
really great photographer, but you'll never see the good stuff he
shoots because it doesn't sell. You shoot what the clients want.

4. Photography is easier than we'd like to admit.

Here's something for you: I've been doing this for a long time. I am
an excellent photographer. Give me an assignment and tell me what you
want and I assure you, I'll come pretty fucking close to the picture
you had inside your head. I am very, very good at what I do.

You know what? You could learn everything I know in a few months.

Maybe less if you really focus on it.

That's it.

My knowledge, my experiences, all of it, from professional sports to
weddings to news to features to product shots to portraits, you can
learn all in a few goddamn months, especially if you have Pro gear.

5. We need to stop being goddamn snobs and accept the coming of The Golden Age

Remember that asshole kid with the $ 5k Nikon D3 whose portfolio was
better than ours?

Have you played with a D3? That is a sweet goddamn camera. That can do
everything you need to do, right now. Even ISO 6400 is beautiful. And
a lot of cameras are like that. Take the Pentax K-5 – beats the hell
out of the Canon 5D Mk III, if we are to believe DxO Mark

Everything is getting better. Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, everything
is fantastic. And that means more people are going to be able to
afford really great cameras that can do amazing things and we are
going to see some amazing photography come from surprising places.

It's going to be awesome.

It may also be the death of a profession – of Pro Photographers?

Is this a bad thing for the industry? Look at the quality of the
photos from a smartphone and the level of editing you can apply to
those shots on the phone itself.

No, this is a damn fucking positive thing. Cheers

From what I've been able to find out, the Pentax version of pixel shifting

The Olympus moves the sensor to enable a 50mp file, the Pentax moves the
sensor to give each pixel point benefit of all three colors, thereby
 improving color depth.

Sigh, of course you are probably right. Plus, the AA simulator is

Re: Lightroom 6 released, It seems worth it for the HDR

2015-04-22 Thread Larry Colen
I just spent some time playing with LR6s new HDR feature. At first
glance, I am very happy with it. It seems to do pretty much exactly
what I want in HDR, it takes several DNG files and combines them into
another DNG file with expanded dynamic range, and no tone mapping.

I'm not sure, but I also suspect that it would work well for stacking
astro shots as well by turning off the anti-ghosting features.

I tried it quickly on two photos from last summer and whether the
results are much better than I was able to get by carefully using the
brush tool in lightroom, it was a LOT easier. I did use the brush to
bring up the clarity on the sky to help bring out the clouds.

The built in ASTROTRACER function must require the GPS. That's how the

What would be really nifty would be the option of getting all three or

file, on the off chance the merge doesn't work, you'd still have
unmerged files that would be usable.

But, that would complicate the UI, and worse yet be an admission that
sometimes things go wrong.

I've been interested in the sensor-shifting approach to resolution

image resolution stays at 24 megapixels, but the quality and accuracy of
those 24 megapixels is noticeably enhanced. Sharpness is increased, color
accuracy per-pixel is increased, and noise is noticeably reduced. The images
are comparable in quality to other cameras that have a higher pixel count in

The new camera also has GPS and a compass built into the camera, with

Re: New Adobe Camera RAW release a new lens I was not aware of...

2015-04-22 Thread Igor PDML-StR

It is indeed a rather interesting lens.
Thanks for posting the info.

As for 2:1, I am thinking about how often it gets practical (for me).
I've used the D-FA 100/2.8 with 1.7x for a few things like a fruit-fly
caught by a spider, etc.
I know that when I tried to stack 2x on top of that it was too much (and
the image was degraded - probably too much glass and it might also be
that I was hitting the diffraction limit from the effective aperture).

I posted a few photos back in 2007:
http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/100-2_0x-1_7x/IMGP9608.jpg
http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/100-2_0x-1_7x/IMGP9609.jpg

The quality of the shots taken with DFA 100/2.8 + x1.7 was reasonable
(you may like or dislike the photos themselves- different people had
different view on the composition,etc.):

http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9503.jpg
http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9527.jpg

Here is the old message describing those:
https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml%40pdml.net/msg422565.html

So, yes, I would benefit from that lens occasionally.. But not sure, - how
often.

Cheers,

Igor

2015-04-22 Thread Philip Northeast
I tried it on some sets of shots that I had processed with Photomatix
Pro. The lightroom versions were quite good, it certainly is faster.

One thing is Photomatix pro will process a single file and help bring
out shadow detail.

You can create a copy in Lightroom and use it with the original to get
Lightroom to process them.

For some photos I preferred the Photomatix version, while on others
Lightroom did the best job. Because it is so fast it is easy to try
Lighroom HDR and also Photomatix then pick the best product

I'm not sure, but I also suspect that it would work well for stacking
astro shots as well by turning off the anti-ghosting features.

I tried it quickly on two photos from last summer and whether the
results are much better than I was able to get by carefully using the
brush tool in lightroom, it was a LOT easier. I did use the brush to
bring up the clarity on the sky to help bring out the clouds.

Not quite following you on the ratios... I've long thought that 1:1
means the image on the sensor is the same size as in real life, 2:1
means 2x lifesized. Did the Macro Takumar achieve greater magnification
that say, the DFA 50mm macro (which Pentax specs as a 1:1 lens)?

2. People are doing some unethical shit with RAW and nobody really

3. Many times, sadly, it doesn't even matter if your photos are all

4. Photography is easier than we'd like to admit.

Cheers Photography and all

What would be really nifty would be the option of getting all three or four
low resolution raw files in addition to the superresolution final file, on
the off chance the merge doesn't work, you'd still have unmerged files that
 would be usable.

I don't see a lot of point to that. The logic that combines the four original
images into a a single multi-channel image is pretty straigntforward; with the
exception of the green component, which is the sum (or average) of values from
two of the original images, each component value in the merged image is just a
copy of the value in one of the four input images (possibly offset by one pixel
horizontally and/or vertically). I consider it extremely unlikely that errors
would occur in doing this combining (and suspect there may, in fact, be custom
hardware such as a one-scanline shift register to support doing this rapidly).

Where I think there is far more possibility for error is in the accuracy of the
sensor shift mechanism in shifting by exactly one pixel. If such an error does
occur the final image may not have quite the full spatial resolution that would
be possible, but it's still going to be better than a Bayer-transformed result
derived from just a single one of the four input images. And, in any case, it's
pretty simple to pick apart the combined image to get the four original images
(except for some slight uncertainty in the green channel).

If you own a Lightroom 5 license and want to upgrade, go to this page,

then once full version of Lightroom is added to the cart, click

Lightroom and then click “Save”. As before, upgrade is priced at $79.

Built in GPS, that's good.

No more pop up flash, for me, also good to lose the flash of last resort. I
much prefer daylight even if the ISO has to be bumped up, but then use a
dedicated flash/other lighting thereafter.

Personally, I'd rather have the flash - useful for fill-in and I can
add GPS co-ordinates in my image management software for those (few)
times I want it. But I'm probably not in the market for this camera
anyway

Pixel shifting, now that's a tricky one. As I understood it, both the camera
and whatever was being photographed had to remain still. Not a problem with
the camera on the tripod, but what about the subject? Or has technology
moved on again and this isn't the problem it was?

Well, the Olympus implementation of this in the E-M5ii requires a
tripod and static subject. I guess we'll have to see if Ricoh has any
tricks up its sleeve.

Not enough to swap from a K3 - although I might be tempted when they start
selling the last ones at reduced prices ;-)

I'm probably not really interested in anything Pentax at the moment,
unless its a large sensor mirrorless with a viewfinder. Can't really
see that happening.
