RE: OT: For Frank

2015-11-13 Thread knarf
My preference is a normal bicycle. But then I'm a cyclist.

These guys obviously want to appeal to non-cycists. They wanted it to look like
a little car. If they really wanted aerodynamics they could have done it
cheaper and more aerodynamically:

http://www.hpvelotechnik.com/produkte/streamer/

I agree with Malcolm, that thin fiberglass or composite shell will give a false
sense of security. They even used the word "protection" in the video when
referring to the shell. Protection from the elements perhaps, but not crash
protection.

The large-ish, bright shell will help with visibility in traffic (a huge
problem with recumbents). But I'm not convinced that the weight penalty would
be offset by aerodynamic gains.

One thing they didn't mention much in the first part of the video (before I got
bored and turned it off) is the electric assist motor (hub assist motors are
common in cargo bikes, BTW). I noticed a solar panel array on the roof; perhaps
that's the reason for the large cab? I'm guessing the motor is powered by a
combination of solar panel electricity and captured momentum energy while
coasting or slowing down. That electric assist is probably a huge part of its
higher top speed.

I think this is interesting but only really useful in warmer weather areas
without a lot of rain (or snow!). I'm not sold on recumbents for a number of
reasons I need not get into now.

I think I'd prefer a regular, upright, bicycle. But I'd like to give one of
those things a spin, just for fun.

Cheers,

frank

The ELF LIMO version has a 550lb payload.

Just a side note - the summer after my Freshman Year in College, I

If you go to the 360 degree view of the ELF on the Organic Transit

Thanks John. I don't intend to go nuts with equipment and I'll start off
small. I'd not seen 'Light Science & Magic' but the 5th edition is on its
way to me now. Nothing I have goes into any real detail, and I'd like to
read the book before buying anything else. Having said that I have seen the
Sekonic L 408 light meter. My light meter comes from another age, certainly
film days and I suspect a while before Pentax introduced the K lens mount! I
know for certain that needs to be updated.

Malcolm

I used the L-408 as an example because it's the one I'm most familiar
with. I'm sure there are other meters just as good.

The thing about using an incident meter is it lets me expose for the
light falling on the subject, which generally gives me an image with the
light parts light, the dark parts dark and the mid-tones properly
exposed, without having to figure out where the in-camera meter is
getting it's information from and having to compensate if it's getting
its reading from the wrong place.

Re: Deleting folders from Lightroom navigator

2015-11-13 Thread John

I use Bridge instead of lightroom, but I have mine organized almost that
way. I let Bridge do the import & it automagically creates folders by
date and sorts the images into them. All I usually have to do is add a
descriptor to the folder name. "MMDD" becomes "MMDD-descriptor".

I don't have the "month" folders, because there have been times when I
didn't get to pick the camera up for a whole month and what use is there
having an empty "November" folder?

I have year folders and within that are dated folders annotated with a
job name or descriptor. I find that useful if I have more than one "job"
on a given day or when a "job" reoccurs over several days.

2015
- 20150101_New_Years_Day
- 20150102_Some_Job-Day1 (or location)
- 20150102_Some_Job-Day2
- 20150103-1_First_Job_of_the_Day
- 20150103-2_Second_Job_of_the_Day

...

Since I'm a Windoze user, the "MMDD-descriptor" format keeps the
folders in chronological order and I usually have a fairly good idea of
the time frame I would have taken certain photos and the descriptors
fill in the blanks. Fall Color isn't likely to be any earlier than
September, nor later than November in any given year.

And if they aren't where I think they should be, I could still do a
keyword search.

On 11/12/2015 7:26 PM, Stanley Halpin wrote:

For me, subject-based folder organization is a nuisance at best and a major
pain at worst. I still have several handfuls of folders from my first Optio,
with names like Fall Colors or Ste Marteen. Which would be fine if that fall of
2003 was the only time I ever shot fall colors, or if the spring of 2004 was to
be my only visit ever to Ste Marteen. But when I revisit those subjects, do I
throw those new images in the folders with the old? To me that doesn’t feel
right.

Since those very early days as I became overwhelmed with the proliferation of
folders and sub folders, I have switched to a calendar based system. Every year has
a folder with twelve subfolders. Period. If all else fails, I can look at the
September & October subfolder if I want to find color. The images themselves
are named with a date prefix in a format that is compatible with my computer’s way
of thinking about dates. So if I ever for some reason needed to look at my images
when not in LR,I can just sort my image files by Date and they will be in
chronological order.

When I import to LR, I always not sometimes not occasionally but always apply
broad keywords to the entire set I am importing. Always including the general
area/region and often the town name.Time permitting after importing, and it
usually does, I will go back through and key word subgroups of images with a
bit more precision. I.e., not just Venice, but also Duosodoro.

As I work on a set of images, from a trip or a time frame, I create a
Collection or two to hold subsets of the images. Sometimes Smart Collections
(e.g., all images shot between 9-18-2015 and 10-05-2015 with a rating of 2
Stars or higher), sometimes subject based collections which I load by
dragging-dropping selected images.

All of this isn’t that much work, even for legacy images freshly imported. With
scanned images, I name them according to the date they were taken. Or my best
guess to that date.

So I have LR in front of me. If I want fall colors, I look at my set of
Collections. Nope, haven’t done that one yet. OK, I’ll do a keyword search.
Maybe narrow it down by looking for fall colors shots near home and those in
Michigan’s U.P. I see I am getting mostly October shots; I’ll check September
and November for a few years, just do a quick scroll through to see if there
are some groupings of fall colors I didn’t properly keyword because I was
paying more attention to some detail rather than to the overall context. If I
see some, I quickly keyword them, redo the search. All of this is very quick
and easy and requires only a) a general sense of what events occurred when on
the calendar, and b) a good but not necessarily compulsive keywording process.

No doubt there are other meters which are as good but the L 408 caught my
eye as well. The water resistant bit added to the appeal! For all the
reasons you mention and more, I need to replace my meter, which I doubt
doesn't even get close to the accuracy of the K3's own metering. I'd like a
reliable, modern and accurate method of working out exposure off camera.

Re: OT: For Frank

2015-11-13 Thread John

I just figured you and some others here might find it interesting.

It has a dual chain drive setup & I think they said the drive wheel is
free-wheeling. One chain is driven by pedal power and the other is
driven by an electric motor mounted on the frame under the seat. I don't
think they have any kind of regenerative braking, but they may be
working on that for the future.

The FAQ says the solar panel will recharge the standard battery from 0
to 100% in approximately 8 hours, but it also includes a plug in charger
that will do the job in about 2.5 hours.

They offer 26" studded tires as an accessory for anyone who wants to
ride this thing in ice & snow. But I didn't see any kind of doors or
side protection from the weather offered among the accessories.

I agree with Malcolm, that thin fiberglass or composite shell will
give a false sense of security. They even used the word "protection"
in the video when referring to the shell. Protection from the
elements perhaps, but not crash protection.

The large-ish, bright shell will help with visibility in traffic (a
huge problem with recumbents). But I'm not convinced that the weight
penalty would be offset by aerodynamic gains.

One thing they didn't mention much in the first part of the video
(before I got bored and turned it off) is the electric assist motor
(hub assist motors are common in cargo bikes, BTW). I noticed a solar
panel array on the roof; perhaps that's the reason for the large cab?
I'm guessing the motor is powered by a combination of solar panel
electricity and captured momentum energy while coasting or slowing
down. That electric assist is probably a huge part of its higher top
speed.

I think this is interesting but only really useful in warmer weather
areas without a lot of rain (or snow!). I'm not sold on recumbents
for a number of reasons I need not get into now.

I think I'd prefer a regular, upright, bicycle. But I'd like to give
one of those things a spin, just for fun.

Cheers,

frank

These things give you a false sense of security, in something that

it offers a lot of surface area to throw you sideways into traffic

I like the ordinariness of having a bike. Look at the cycle-parking and the
absence of locks. There are already quite a few cars around, but it's the
period just before mass car ownership and the wholesale surrender here of towns
and cities to the car during the 1960s.

The second paragraph of the introduction to this report, and graph on p.4 are
quite interesting:

Thank you Ann.

I have blurred the background a bit during post processing.
(They were intentionally blurred during the shoot).
I will try more.

The other option requires a re-shoot which is impossible :(

I will let you know.

These things give you a false sense of security, in something that offers no
real protection at all and gives you loads of blind spots. It might be
substantially heavier than a normal cycle, but it offers a lot of surface
area to throw you sideways into traffic in a crosswind. Buy a normal cycle.

Wait until you start dealing with the documentation they write for updates.

They have updates, oh no.

Not only do they have updates, but they use them to add features, not
just fix stuff that crops up in user reports.

Fuji is pretty good that way.
But their documentation seems to presume that the user doesn't need the
documentation.
