Many of those lawnmowers don't look too bad - actually better than my Honda
HR194 which is still running after 30 years. Has only had a ring job, a
couple of starter ropes & many blade replacements.

An extremely interesting and varied gallery. I had a great time
viewing all the interpretations of the theme.

My favorite is "Where Lawnmowers Go to Die" by Brian Walters. What a
find! not exactly :pretty," but compelling.

It appears that we have a lot of wood workers in the PDML. It also
appears that Ann stayed in the kitchen, where all good women belong,
of course.

Bruce's pipe cutter wins the prize for the shapeliest tool.

Thanks to all who contributed, and especially to our devoted PUG-meister,
Brian.

Re: PESO: Kia Orana

2015-12-03 Thread David Mann
I probably should have mentioned that "kia orana" is a greeting in Cook Islands
Maori. Their language is closely related to NZ Maori, who say "kia ora".
There is history of settlers from the Cook Islands colonising NZ so the lingual
similarities are not surprising.

Cook Islanders are brought up as bilingual (alongside English) which keeps
their language alive. We could do better here... when I was in primary school
we learned only a little Maori. I can almost count to 10...

Having said that there is actually a Maori-language immersion primary school a
couple of km from my house.

Re: PESO - Small Wasp

2015-12-03 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Great work, as usual, Mark!

I do not find these insect particularly ugly or threatening.
In many (most?) cases those impressions both concepts are
experience-based.

Naturally, a human brain tends to like what we are used to, and dislike
(or even get threatened by) what is very disparate from ourselves: we fear
unknown.
I think it is very similar to the roots of xenophobia (and a few other
phobias). I also think a similar mechanism is responsible (at least in
part) for face recognition problems across races.

Mark, I see why you said this insect looks like a puppy.
It does a little bit.
By the way, this is actually a great example of that we tend to relate
new objects to something that we are familiar with.
Very similarly, we find human-like features in cars (headlights -> eyes,
grill -> face), and classify some grill features as friendly or
aggressive.

Igor

PS. I find it interesting that a few months ago I was shooting a wasp,
thinking it was an ant queen. :-)

Lots and lots of mature trees. Get up in a high-rise, look down, you
don’t see buildings. You see trees. Late winter-early spring we’re
always at risk of getting rain right around freezing temperature. Ice
builds up on trees. Branches start falling. Then trees. And with them
the power lines. It’s worth putting up with, though. The trees are
one of the truly wonderful things about the city.

Bulent,

It is a nice image.
I see a story, but it might be different from yours.

But on my, seemingly still calibrated, screen, - it looks a bit too dark.
If it were my image, I would have bumped up the exposure (in LR).
I would have also considered some "unsharpen mask" ("presence" in LR), -
to have the flower standing out more.

Best,

Igor

Thanks, Rick.

The story must be lost on everybody!
It requires a very heavy dose of anthropomorphism...
And it is best left untold since the image itself has enough graphic
elements to rest upon.

I am not sure, however, if color is really needed here.

Re: OT: Adobe "mobile apps and services" with CC Photo plan

2015-12-03 Thread Donald Guthrie
The Tablet aps are useful for some. For example when traveling you can
look at a collection of photos select winners and even make adjustments
to the photos which will be reflected the next time you open LR. The
feature I am starting to use is the free unlimited online gallery. My
last GESO to PDML was a link to my online Adobe cloud. You have complete
control of which photos are public. You can set it up so that viewers to
your site can select photos (to print for example) or even make
comments. This seems to me to be very valuable to Wedding or event
photographers. All this is done by flipping a switch on any collections
you have created. Which can be flipped off and the photos disappear
from the site but not you catalog. Pretty good for free.

Looks as if he congealed mid stride. :)
I lived in Iowa for 20+ winters.
I don't know what I was thinking.

The thing about Iowans is no matter the weather they like to be a little
bit uncomfortable. This photo is a bit of a Frankenstein creation. It
was shot on Oly M4/3 using a 50 yr old 50mm Sears lens in the Pentax M42
mount. I cropped out 2/3rds of the photo and resized in Perfect resize
to 11x14. It may or may not have been worth it but it was a fun experiment.
Thanks for looking comments always welcomed.

Doesn't just being in Iowa make on uncomfortable?

We were there for the 01 & 07 storms, though we departed just ahead of each.
Driving through western OK one observes broken blackjack oak trees
everywhere.
They remain from the 01 storm.

PESO 2015 - 184 - GDG

Dusk light and streetlamp mixed ...

I think this one benefits from being printed fairly large, and looks best in
the full-resolution image. I liked the feel of the "grain" (noise) that was
produced and did no smoothing or sharpening.

enjoy,

The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it.

Thanks, Jack, Don, Igor Frank and Boris.

It is a fun event. We have taken our Malemute at least once for the
last 4 years or so.
