PESO: Death of a Tree

2016-04-14 Thread Alan C
This huge Soetdoring (Sweet Thorn - Acacia Karroo) which has been shading
the west end of our house for over 40 years has finally succumbed to the
drought. There is another large branch out of photo to the right. We have
decided to allow the wood borers to do their thing on the soft, light wood
so the branches can be pulled off over a period. The tree must be at least
60 years old because it was already there when the house was built in 1968.
It has been home to many garden birds & lizards & also a pit stop for larger
birds, squirrels & even the occasional monkey. Feels like the loss of a
friend.

Thanks, Rick ...

Partly true re DOF.. but motion related as well - motion of the flowers...
I was battling wind and my hands and unhappily - I wasn't aware I was
shooting at f 4.5 - thats a result of slipped fingers. Had it on auto
focus, ap pref and
200 ISO - the auto focus zoned in on the branch - but that isn't really
sharp either... that's the wind's fault I think. the only nicely sharp
photos I gotthat day were the ones I took insidethe conservatory - no wind.

Ideally, in this one, I'd have liked the left most two blooms to have
lots of detail.

still there. At least EZ-Pass has eliminated most of the back-ups.

I believe that, some time ago, we had a map that showed all the PDML

thinks that would be useful. See, for example:

I disagree most strongly. The government will get our money, one way
or another. What I resented about the old toll system is that I had
to wait in endless lines in order to cough up what the state demanded

Re: PESO: Death of a Tree

2016-04-14 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I certainly understand the pain of losing a favorite tree.

We had a Kwanzan Cherry that was in our back yard when we purchased
our current home. It was spectacular ever spring. about 6 years ago,
it started to look tired, and 4 years ago it died. We replace it
three years ago with a similar specimen, and it is just starting to
show the kind of beauty that the old one had.

Lat year we lost one of my treasured dogwoods. I plan to replace it
in a week or so, I still have four mature dogwoods on the property,
but I miss the one we lost.

Maybe it is, but it cuts down on the time it takes to get to the places

I agree with Bob about straight roads being an abomination. We're about

usual, we'll follow the inland road, stopping off at lots of interesting
places that the motorways bypass. The journey is just as important as
the destination.

We make up for the taxes with high property costs.

But other than nice weather, four racetracks within a few hours drive,
the beach a few minutes away, skiing and Yosemite a few hours away, an
incredible music scene, and proximity to an amazing variety of food in
the Bay Area, several state parks within a half hour drive, and being
smack dab in the middle of one of the best wine regions in the world,
there aren't a lot of reasons to live here.

Portland OR, where hipsters go to retire, also has a lot to recommend
it, starting with Powell's City of books.

I think you folks should spend the summer touring the country, visiting
PDMLers and getting a better idea of what areas work for you.

I guess New Bern is quite a fashionable retirement area these days.
When I lived down there (in Havelock near MCAS Cherry Point), New Bern
was a sleepy backwater know only for being the Colonial capital of NC.
I found that area too muggy and buggy.

OTOH, in my Marine Days I also spent some time on the Gulf Coast, in
and near Pensacola. I really like the panhandle coast much more that
the Gulf or Atlantic coasts to the East. Th Panhandle coast is not as
warm in the winter, but it is also not as muggy and buggy in the
summer.

The San Lorenzo Valley is probably some of the most affordable property
in the Bay Area, particularly if you want to be within a nominal 45
minutes of work in the Silicon Valley. There are some downsides if you
want things like reliable power in the winter, or a house where all of
the rooms were built at the same time.

My first wife was from Florida, along the coast between North Miami Beach and
Fort Lauderdale, and I spent quite a bit of time there summers and vacations
before and during our marriage. That would not be a region I would ever want to
live. Heat, humidity… Maybe the gulf coast is better in that regard. I think in
most regards Asheville would be way up on my list if I were looking to move.
But I am quite pleased with our current circumstance in mid-Michigan and don’t
anticipate ever moving again. Unless we are flooded out.

The government kept the Tolls in Connecticut long after mandated payment
for the road was completed. The public unrest over that was palpable,
and the legislature in fear of losing their phony baloney jobs, voted to
remove them. It was planned for 6 months after the vote, but in the
interim there was a horrendous accident at a toll plaza, with multiple
casualties, when a tractor trailer driver started to fall asleep at the
wheel. The Governor had them shut down within a week by executive
order. I guess the government in NJ is less responsive than in
Connecticut.

PESO: I <3 Sunspots

2016-04-14 Thread Darren Addy
You may have heard of the ginormous sunspot now taking center stage on
our local star. I had to attempt it, so snagged this photo of
ginormous Sunspot AR2529 during my afternoon work break. The inset is
at 100% and appears to be a "heart" at it's core. Taken with a Pentax
K-3 II at 1600 ISO with home made AstroSolar filter. Sigma EX 50-500mm
f4-6.3 DG with a Pentax-F 1.7x teleconverter.

I believe the Sigma was at 500mm plus the 1.7x. This is a single image
(taken from the JPEG) with no stacking or sharpening - only color
correction. (My filter makes everything look violet).

Well, it will be a chore, but once it’s over it may be worth it. I considered a

Ah yes. Powell's.

My wife spent an afternoon there during our USA trip in 2013 and only
left because the store closed and we were heading south first thing next
morning, so she couldn't go back. A carton of books from Powell's was
awaiting our return to Qz several weeks later

Where am I located? My sig tells all.

Re: OT: Word of the Day

2016-04-14 Thread Paul
True - it's less noticeable. We don't have to deal with tolls here in
Wisconsin, although it's talked about from time to time. But if you do
any amount of traveling in Illinois, especially in the Chicago area, the
I-Pass (IL version of EZ-Pass) is the way to go. If you choose to pay
cash, the tolls are double the I-Pass tolls.

They promised that would happen when they built the Garden State
Parkway, but it has paid for itself many times over, and the tolls are
still there. At least EZ-Pass has eliminated most of the back-ups.

EZ-Pass just makes fleecing the sheep less noticeable to the sheep. It's
an abomination. Another innovation that makes it easier to take cash
out of one's wallet. The whole concept is just evil.

In that case, there are a lot of places South County, like Corallitos.
The problem being that there isn't so much for someone Grace's age to
do, as they are pretty rural.

A little closer to town, you have Bonny Doon, which at one point was

K-3 II shooting video: No Card In the Camera (Wanna bet?)

2016-04-14 Thread Darren Addy
I haven't been much of a video shooter, but I thought I would try
capturing video of the sun today. But when I tried it (with two
different cards) when I went to start recording it gave me a "No Card
in Camera" message. Same cards record video fine in the K-01.

As I was typing this, it occured to me: Does video only go to Slot 2?
Or is that something I set in menus, maybe? I didn't think of it at
the time or I would have tried it.

Just tried the card in Slot 2 NOW and it records fine. So I must have
set it up that way (or it is that way by default). Decided to still
send this to the group in case knowing this is useful to anyone else.
I'm never afraid to run my ignorance up the flagpole for the Greater
Good.
:)
