Re: Long macro lenses for K mount?

2016-05-12 Thread P.J. Alling
Vivitar made the Series 1 Flat Field 90-180mm 4.5 flat field zoom. I
have one but have never tried it on a digital body, it has that stupid
over sized stop down lever protector flange that the original Series 1
lenses were affected with. It only focused to 1:2, (I do have other
ways to get larger reproduction ratios), at 180mm but it's very sharp on
film. Someday I'll have to Dremal the offending excess metal off to try
it on a digital camera. I've only been saying that for about 10 years
now. It's a lovely hunk of glass and metal, a fine lens and it would
probably be quite handy for self defense.

Two part question:

What are the options for long focal length macros? How are they
optically? Are there any teleconverters that do well? Or, am I just
better off cropping tighter?

In a similar vein, are there technical reasons for the dearth of long
macro lenses? Or is it just that the market for them is too small for
them to be commercially viable?

1) Use a tripod. A good one. I know it seems like the photos turn out
fine when looking at them on the back of the camera, but really, you
spend all that money on good gear, don't mess it up.

2) When the lighting changes, photograph a color reference.

3) Clean the front element of your fisheye lens, particularly when
shooting into the sky, i.e. any time you take a photo outdoors.

4) Doing HDR processing of two frames when shooting running water can
give a very cool effect where you get both the sense of movement and
the shape of the splashing water. It would be really nice if
lightroom gave more control over blending two photos in that manner.

5) If I'm going to be photographing landscapes,in the forest, late in
the afternoon, while stitching panoramas taken with a K-3 and the
16-50 will "work" I really "need" a K-1 and 15-30.

6) I need better (and better fitting) sandals if I'm going to be on
uncertain terrain immediately after walking through a creek.
Uncertain footing either between the ground and the sandal, or the
sandal and my foot is a kind of fun that I can usually do without.
