I will grant that Amazon has amazingly good customer service. As a matter of fact, a couple days after the fracas, I got an email from Amazon that they saw that I had unsuccessfully tried to use the visa30 discount and credited my account with $30. They also decided that my account was a business account, and as such, I get the prime free 2-day shipping on orders over $50 (or whatever it is). That being said, just about every other aspect of Amazon is pure evil. The horrible working conditions of their employees have been the subject of many articles. A friend of mine is a Hugo winning author, and he has many stories of the ways that they totally screw over publishers and authors. Plus, many of their practices are designed to kill competitors. Jostein, That's a beautiful photo of a somewhat scary looking beast! If you sat just a bit lower, you could probably get a catch-light in her eyes. ;-) Just kidding... Re: Amazon Prime Day VISA30 SNAFU
Larry, Sorry to hear about your problems with Chase/Amazon. In my experience, Chase is an average bank: not the best, but not the worst. (Citi is much worse.) Amazon, on another hand, is a company that has one of the best records for their performance and customer service. Walmart.com is actually trying to catch up with Amazon but so far couldn't get even close - neither in the technical aspects of the online orders and returns, nor in the level of the customer service. In the past several years of having Amazon Prime membership, we've had periods when a UPS guy was dropping off Amazon shipments 4 days a week. That was a big time- (and money-) saver and a savior when you have a little kid (especially in the area where the stores carrying baby products are limited to Walmart & Target). Actually, I think Amazon got us spoiled with the speed of delivery and quality of customer service that other stores are now having hard time to match that. I also think that Amazon was the reason why mail-order places such as B&H and Adorama had improved their policies and customer service in the past decade+ (and especially past 5-7 years). Yes, we've had some screw-ups from Amazon, and one time (maybe 2?) we had to bring a present after the party happened. But in all cases, Amazon tried to do everything they realistically could to make up for the problem. Just saying... Igor Larry Colen Wed, 13 Jul 2016 12:08:09 -0700 wrote: I won't bore you with details of my travails right now but I got an email notification of a promotion $30 off any order of $150 or more using my Chase amazon rewards card. In the process of shopping I realized that I needed two more large hard drives as both my working drive and my secondary backup were close to full. When the dust settles, we're talking a $600 order, and at checkout, I find out via a terse error message that the discount code has been expired, over 12 hours early, and possibly just a few minutes before I tried to check out. After spending much time on the phone yesterday with multiple calls to both Chase and Amazon, not even getting any sort of courtesy credit, I cancelled my Amazon rewards card. My new Costco card gives me as much cash back, it doesn't have to be at Amazon, and Costco is much less evil than Amazon. Actually, Costco seems to be pretty darned ethical while Amazon competes with Walmart in levels of evil. This morning, the order that I had made, using the rewards card one last time to collect $120 in rewards, wouldn't go through. They had not charged the card when I made the order. I have 30 days to collect my rewards after cancelling, but there is no way to collect them. Adoramapix is unreliable (Adoramapix woes)
I appreciate everybody's responses with the suggestions of alternatives places. I thought I'd provide an update about the saga with AdoramaPix. Last week, I spoke with Adoramapix representatives and they offered as one of the options to upload the files with the SRGB color space and they said they would do "their best effort" to expedite printing and to ship overnight it after that. I indicated (as with the original order), that I hoped to receive it by Saturday. That was Tuesday afternoon (July 12). At that point I thought maybe they are good about taking care of the hiccups (and almost wrote about it to PDML..., but decided to wait till the end). Today is July 18, the date by which my original order should have arrived, and they still haven't finished printing the "expedited" order, "because due to the high volume of orders they had technical difficulties". So much for "expediting". (Their website says: "Our normal turnaround on prints is 2-4 days. Expedited service will cut this turnaround down to 1 business day. Please have your orders in before 10am in order to get them shipped out the same day.") They didn't bother contacting me, or responding to my e-mail inquiry I sent on Friday. Ufortunately, I no longer need some 60 photos from that order after today. In the end, I had to order those photos to be printed at Walmart 1-hour lab. So, I canceled that order (even though I paid only the shipping, as I used their 100 free prints offer). Obviously nobody can return me the time wasted for ordering on their website (which is quite considerable, as the UI is very sluggish). While I admit that I should have been more careful and should have noticed that they only accept SRGB images, their handling of the order is far from what you expect from a "professional print shop": They e-mailed me that they cannot deal with any other color spaces, and didn't tell me what would be happening next, or what my options were. They didn't tell me that the order was put on hold. And that was already a full week (!) after the order was placed. And even if they had the printer breaking (the way the CSR spoke about that was not straight forward and was not convincing), they should be informing about that, especially for the "Expedited" orders. If you paid the expedited fee and overnight shipping and had not received it after 6 days with a total silence about the delay, what would be your reaction? Bottom line: Terrible-terrible service. Far from "professional". Additionally, - the information about the order status does not get updated on the website. The order that was cancelled last Tuesday is still showing as "processing". There is also an old order that shows 2006 in one place and 2012 in another; the status for it is "processing". Conclusions: 1. If I'd ever use Adoramapix again, that would be for the jobs where I can wait for at least a month. 2. Free cheese is only in a mousetrap. Caveat Emptor! Igor PS. Sorry for the lengthy message. - I am not trying to vent here. I am rather calm about it. But I wanted to make other aware of what can go wrong with Adoramapix, should you consider using this lab in the future. Adoramapix is _UNRELIABLE_ . On Mon, 11 Jul 2016, Igor PDML-StR wrote: I've be seriously disappointed by Adoramapix today. And there might be some useful information (a warning) for anybody who considers using them. Well, let me tell the entire story. In the era of film, I've used to print at Adorama store in person, while living in NYC, and I had my favorite master that I was asking to print my photos, even if that would take an extra day because it wasn't his day. The way Michael was doing colors was what I wanted. Then after moving away from NYC, I've used Adoramapix a few times to order photos via mail to some relatives on the East cost, and some photos for myself. Fast-forward some 8-10 years. A few months ago, Adoramapix started sending their spam (aka UCE) to the address used for my account with them. That's after more than 8 years of no relations. (This IS a violation of the existing, albeit miserably failed anti-spam laws. But this message is not about that.) Just before July 1, I've got an e-mail from them with a special code for 100 free 4x6 photos. I actually needed to print something. So, I ordered them. Of course, the shipping is not free, and the faster you want them shipped things quicly pick up quite some price (that's apart from the "rush processing" if you want to have them printed within less then a week). I've sent photos with the embedded Adober RGB (And a few with PhotoRGB) color profiles. At the last moment, I've written in the comments that is am embedded color profile in each photo (PhotoRGB or AdobeRGB). A week later (when I am thinking that my order is hopefully already put in the mail), I am getting an e-mail message (in between 4 identical Adorama+AdoramaPix spam messages "Adorama + Nigel Ba

OT - shooting high -- Charles Ebbets
I came across the photo at the top of this page: http://www.ebbetsphoto-graphics.com/page/about-the-artist/ Charles Ebbets preparing for his “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photograph in 1932. He was on the 69th floor of the GE building. Re: Hyperfocal distance and circle of confusion in metadatafile of Pentax K5 and K1
I agree with you fully. But still it is fun for me, thinking of possibilities to make the focusing process more intelligent, meaning faster and more accurate, but not more accurate than needed. If the system knows the depth of field, it can take the allowable error into account and optimize speed with that information. I did not check all my lenses. But I checked an old and a new Sigma lens. Both lenses have a lens ID in the metadata that is used by several different lenses with totally different minimum focus distances. So it must be another lens code informing the camera about the minimum focus distance. If that is true, than LR gets more information to show the correct lens name, and not: Lens1 or lens2 or lens3 as it does now sometimes. And why is the camera spending time in calculating the hyperfocal distance? Is it using that? And why is it passing that information to us in the metadata file? And also the circle of diffusion it used in the calculation? Who will use that info down the line? I realize that if I get information, I start to think about it. And if I donot see the logic, I think harder . Greetz, Jos On 18-Jul-16 06:15, P.J. Alling wrote: I don't think the camera knows the minimum focus distance on any lens that doesn't have that data on it's chip. So it's only available for some F series lenses and later. It might also be available from the A lenses supplied with the MZ/ZX-M I think there were two lenses that were pretty much the same as their FA counterparts, a 35-80 and a 80-200mm, which might be pretty rare as the FA versions were pretty inexpensive to begin with. I really don't think that the autofocus system is smart enough nor are the lenses standardized enough for the system to interpolate anything about focus throw. The AF system misses the focus point and simply tries again, running through the entire range of the lens. If after a certain amount of effort, which seems to be random, but probably isn't, it simply gives up. The K-5II gives up a lot less often, and gets the right focus more often, than earlier cameras but it still gives up eventually. On 7/17/2016 12:46 PM, Jos from Holland wrote: The metadata also shows the minimum focus distance. How can the camera know, even when it does not know which lens is mounted? Only the lens can tell the minimum focus distance. But if the camera knows the minimum and maximum focus distance, than it could estimate the focus distance! Is that why it hunts now and than: to throw the AF between minimum and maximum focus distance and interpolate values in between?:-) Greetz, Jos On 17-Jul-16 18:11, Larry Colen wrote: Jos from Holland wrote: Going through the metadata of K5 and K1 files I observed that the hyper-focal distance is available, based on the applied aperture and focal length. Wouldn't it be nice if this info was visible on camera for manual adjustment, or even better an select-able auto focus mode with hyper-focal priority? I wish the lens mounts would return focus distance to the camera body. If they can engrave it on the lens, then they can know it electronically. Also the circle of confusion is given: 0.02mm for K5 and 0.03mm for K1. Considering the a full frame camera will / can be used for larger prints, I would prefer to keep the circle at 0.02mm for K1 as well. Or better: user selection of he circle size resulting in corresponding hyper focal distance.
