PS. You would probably start yelling "boring", if I were to start telling
you that the first word root "vari" comes from "variable"... and not
"varaible" ;-)

P.S. It is "varifocal", not "Varafocal". ;-)
In the era of film cameras, I was happy to get Tokina ATX-Pro 28-70/2.6-2.8,
as besides being fast it was parfocal. With zoom, that allows zooming in to
focus more precisely. Also, changing zoom after you've focused is easier: you
don't need to think about refocusing.

P.J. Alling Sat, 29 Oct 2016 10:08:41 -0700 wrote:

So I've been getting along using a combination of a Manual focus Varafocal,
(Vivitar 35-85mm f2.8), and a FA 20-35mm which satisfies most of my needs,
but they can be damnably inconvenient, the varafocal makes me think that
sometimes I need extra fingers and more inertial processing for my brain to
keep track of stop down metering, re-framing and refocusing, which leads to a
lot more missed shots than I'm happy with. Swapping to the 20-35 and back, is
sometimes necessary at very inconvenient times which also leads to missed
shots.

It doesn't look like a Full Frame camera is in my budget for quite some time,
and let's face it, I've come to terms with APS-C. The K-5II is more than
sufficient for most of what I do, in fact is better than most needs. A more
identical backup body is what I'm more likely to get than an actual full
frame camera, maybe a K-7 another K-5[II(s)], or K3 thought the latter would
have some of the same problems as using the K20D as backup, though the K5II
hasn't failed me yet.

So I'm looking at APS-C lenses.

I've kind of narrowed it down to five lenses, at this point, based on
reviews.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8, comes in couple versions, latest version still available
new.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 also comes in a couple of versions latest version still
available new.

Pentax FA 17-70, seems to be discontinued, but still available new.

Sigma 17-70, three versions, latest one still available new.

All of them have pluses and minuses, the Pentax FA* is the most expensive,
the first version of the Tamron is least expensive, of course it's only
really available used. I like the idea of the 17-70 as it would cut down on
the necessity of changing lenses when things are moving fast.

I know there are people on the list who've used later Sigma 17-70, and the
two Pentax lenses, but what about the Sigma 17-50 and Tamron 17-50 has
anybody got any experience with them? Optically good? Mechanically crap? Vice
Versa?

It comes down to the fact that I don't trust most reviewers. I'll pick up
something that's gotten bad reviews play with it a while and think, this
isn't nearly as bad as I expected, hell this even seems to be pretty good,
and things that have gotten good reviews and think, what the f*#k was that
guy talking about this is pretty horrible. You guys have real world
experience, what is it.

I'd sort of like to see the uncropped version tooactually. And I liked
the shot for it's geometry and the point you were making with thenew
more modern ladder..

The summer of 1956, when I lived in Taos for two months, I wouldn't go
to the Taos Pueblo because I didn't like the idea of people gaping at
the Pueblo Indians that lived there, as looking at their community,
which was definitely impoverished in 1956... as"quaint"... eventually
there were shops and such added and I came over to the realization that
it was necessary to preserve the historic site and allow people to keep
living there and that vistors were welcome tokeep the Pueblo alive.
Richard and I visited in 1985and I went once more after that... probably
back to the town of Taos, not the pueblo , about 10 timesover the years.
New Mexico has been important to me personally on many levels ..

I ramble... and babble as it is unlikely I could ever return there

Re: In other news Ken Rockwell is still an idiot.

2016-10-31 Thread P.J. Alling
Let's just say I was continuing my lens research, got a link that google
told me was connected, and clicked on it without looking at the
destination. I ended up at his review of the K-3II. I'll summarize,
makes great images, hate the ergonomics, Canon and Nikon make better.

Even though it was overall positive, he really liked the image quality,
(probably of the Jpegs as I highly doubt he actually processed any raw
files), and I agreed with some of his criticism, (though his take is
because he doesn't like something it's objectively bad, rather than a
subjective matter of taste, something he has no capability of separating
even if he thinks about it, indicates his weak mind. His basic
/deserved/ insecurity, about his lack of skills comes through in his
writing style. The actual tone of most of his writing could basically
be described as the digitalrev guys in print, something that doesn't
translate well, without the actual talent and sense of humor. A man's
got to know his limitations and stick within them.

Now I've actually given his review /more/ time than it deserves. Reading
it was 10 minutes of my life, I will never get back. Venting actually
felt cathartic.

Re: PSO: Taos Pueblo

2016-10-31 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I was told that, of the 19 surviving pueblo communities in New Mexico, 11
survive by owning casinos. One instead owns the Santa Fe Hotel and Spa,
where we stayed. Taos and Santa Clara (Puye Pueblo) choose tourism, to a
limited extent, and the sale of native crafts.

That is certainly the case. The first Taos PESO was focused more on the
(to me) remarkable fact that the Taos Pueblo was not an ancient ruin, but
the site of a continuing native settlement, although most members of the
Pueblo now live in a more modern village nearby.

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

2016-10-31 Thread P.J. Alling
OK, at this point I'm leaning towards the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. The one
report I've had from the list about it is that it's optically very
good. The outside reviews complain about it's plasticy build, and noisy
AF motor, but hell large numbers of even fairly expensive lenses are
mostly plastic these days and all my current AF lenses are screw drive,
I wouldn't know what to do if a lens didn't make /some/ noise. The
kicker is that Amazon is selling the damned things for a tiny bit less
than $250.00 grey market.

Optically it appears to be on par with the Pentax DA 16-50, and Sigma
17-50 for approximately 1/3 and 3/5 the price of the former and latter
respectively. True it's got the same warranty you'd get if you bought a
used lens but even then it's less than 1/2 the price of a LN used
Pentax, and about the same as the LN used Sigma.

The only fly in the ointment is that the USA version of the Tamaron has
a 6 year guarantee, does it need it. I know that was the selling point
of early imported Hyundai automobiles, they had the longest warranty in
the US market because you /needed/ it.

Well, not a river exactly.

This is the stream that divides the summer side of the Taos Pueblo from the
winter side.

Oh thats a River. Ever seen the Santa Fe river? This stream you took a
photo of is larger than that river most of the time.

Yes, I know what you mean, but we spent more time at the Rio Grande, which
is quite a bit larger than either.
Water is precious in that part of the world.

PESO: Beige and Blue

The dominant hues of Santa Fe are Beige and Blue: Adobe structures and
clear blue skies. I thought it could make an interesting abstract:
