And the Leica R8 body that I wanted so badly in 1998 and simply
couldn't afford (it was over $2600, never mind the lenses!) was sold
to me in minty mint mint condition, in the original presentation box,
with the winder, for $199 two years ago. The Leicaflex SL body, which
cost over $800 in 1969 when I first saw one and fell in love with it
(a Nikon F Photomic FTn with 50mm f/1.4 lens was $415 then, to give
you a sense of the scale of its price) was tossed in with two of the
Leica R lenses I bought in 2013 at no charge—nobody offered the seller
a dime for it. My beloved Olympus E-1, a professional grade body in
2004 that cost over $2200, currently sells for about $80.

Thanks Alan. Don't read too much into the comparison. The shots with
the Bigma were on a different day, in better light, on a 24MP APS body
rather than what would be 18MP. I just did a quick check, with the
bigma/K-3 a blackbird was about 1700 pixels long, with the 55-300 it was
about 800 pixels long, so on tight crops I get about 4 times the number
of pixels, which works out about right ((500/300) * (24/18))^2.

However, the bigma is a damn fine lens for the money, I picked mine up
used, along with the 50/2.8 macro for $1000. The downsides to it are
pretty harsh bokeh, it's not weather sealed and it's only f/6.3 at the
long end.

As I write this, there's a blackbird nearby singing.

The bigma on the K-3 did a lot better with tight crops on small birds

Nice shots, Larry. Takes me back (the swing, that is). I would be interested
to see how the Bigma & HD 55-300 compare. I find crops with the HD 55-300
@300 are just as good as uncropped shots with a Sigma 170-500 @ 500.

one of a tire swing
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/32704700701/in/album-72157676657828303/

Also a small gallery of some birds at the Willamette River a couple
blocks from where I'm staying. Maybe not up there with Paul and Jack,
but still possibly my best shots so far of hummingbirds. Shot with the
K-1 and Nicole's 55-300 (because it is WR and mine isn't I talked her
into swapping for my trip to the northwet).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157680094829546

I think it has stopped raining, so I'm going to give it a try with the
bigma, maybe on the K-3 ii because I'll be cropping them to a
faretheewell anyways and it has a tighter pixel pitch.

Once the industry shot itself in the foot by allowing folks to cease printing,
it had to find maintenance costs from somewhere.

It will be interesting to see how the digital Ms hold their value, particularly
the M10 forward now that the depth of the body has reverted to the original
size.

My feeling is that when the thin version of the typ 262 comes out, assuming I
can afford it, it should be the last camera I buy, with retirement in prospect.
Providing of course that the hardware etc. is good enough to outlive me.

The photos I took last weekend were with the Olympus E-3. A fantastic camera
and lenses, but 8 mpix seems so niggardly these days. How spoilt we are. But I
do prefer 2:3 to 3:4.
