Re: K-1 review rehash
Stan - Using the K-3, I shoot RAW+JPG. I keep an Eye-Fi card in slot 2. The card in slot 1 gets the raw files and the Eye-Fi in slot 2 gets the smallest JPGs the camera will generate. The JPGs transfer fairly quickly to my iPad for initial review when I'm not near a computer. The JPG quality is good enough for a quick social media post or to quickly send off in an email. -p On 3/15/2017 11:11 AM, Stanley Halpin wrote: I have not explored wifi etc with the K-1, partly because I can’t imagine why I would care, and partly because I assume that the bandwidth/speed would be too low to be useful. Re: k-1 review lenses and other gear
Interesting summation of your experiences with lenses on the K-1. Thanks for posting this and your other K-1 reviews. I'm using the same zoom setup that you are using - 28-105 Tamron 28-75. My first impressions are that the lenses both are excellent. Maybe I got lucky with my sample of the Tamron, but if I had to choose between the two I'd probably pick it. It seems to be a little sharper than the 28-105 and of course infinity better at f2.8 (and other apertures) that the 28-105 does not support. Both lenses outperform the APS-C zooms that I was using (DFA 18-55, 16-45 and 17-70) and none of those lenses were bad at all. After a couple weeks I can say that the DFA 50 and 100 macros seem to be outstanding, as well as the A*200 macro and fa50 f1.7. My Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is very good but a bit short of excellent. I need to test the FA 20-35 some more - seems to be very good at 35mm but not as strong at 20. Mark On 3/15/2017 12:58 PM, Larry Colen wrote: lens selection and reviews: At the moment, most of the lenses I can’t afford on my wish list are made by sigma. If sigma were weather resistant and sold their entire line for K-mount Ricoh might sell a lot more bodies and fewer lenses. 28-105 I picked up the 28-105 so that I'd have a weather sealed standard range zoom for use outdoors. Years ago I got a lens in this range and it pretty much covered all of my needs at the time. It seems to be reasonably sharp. When much of my photography is in challenging light, I end up using primes or my 28-75 far more often. Due to lack of space, while we have nice weather, I've taken it out of my camera bag. In not as nice weather it is my daily driver outdoors lens. Tamron 28-75/2.8 This is my moderate light daily driver. Not weather sealed or as sharp as the 28-105, not as much range, but a lot faster. If I had the money for the 24-70 I’d probably have one. 15-30 The 15-30 is a nice lens, but it is huge. DA 35/2.8 macro This lens nearly works as a FF lens, there is some slight vignetting in some circumstances which can be alleviated with a slight crop. DFA 50/2.8 macro I expect that I would use this lens a lot for a single walk around the woods prime. DFA 100/2.8 WR macro Very sharp, very nice, bought one to supplant Tamron 90/2.8 macro because a lot of my macro work is outdoors where it can be wet. FA 50/1.4 In many ways this lens works very well. It is much better on FF than on APS. However, it seems to show a bit of weakness in the coatings. DA 55/1.4 This lens needs a sunshade that is meant for FF use. It seems to impinge on the corners of the image. Rokinon 24/1.4 I wish this lens had autofocus, or at least that the live view worked better. It’s a great lens, particularly for astrolandscape photography. 18-250 While this lens is great on APS, it has an internal shade that makes it always crop to the APS sensor. 55-300 This lens works well at the wide end and at the long end, but crops in the middle. 50-500 My old sigma 50-500 is still reasonably sharp on the k-1, and still has nervous bokeh. It also lacks weather sealing. FA 80-200/2.8 31/1.8 ltd 77/1.8 ltd Sigma 20/1.8 Much more interesting on FF than it was on APS. Since getting the Rokinon 24/1.4 as a fast wide lens, I wasn’t using it as often and loaned it to a friend. Lens wish list: Camera bag: My fastpak 350 is nearly the perfect bag for my APS kit, but doesn't seem to work so well for full frame. I have not yet figured out what my standard kit is, or how I want to carry it. Flash: My Metz 58 flash stopped working properly with the K-1 until I upgraded the firmware. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My current F 70-210mm is more Varifocal than the previous.
That says it all. Either there was a focusing problem with all my previous Pentax DSLRs or the sample variation in this one particular lens is huge and bizarre. I never noticed a large difference in focus at 70mm and at 210mm on the two previous versions of this lens that I've owned, (there was a very slight change with the second one I owned), but this one is quite noticeably out of focus, if focus is set at 210 and the lens is then zoomed to 70mm, without refocusing. Testing it I find a small but magnificent focus correction if I auto focus both before and after a zooming operation. It's kind of annoying that it's not as able to hold true focus through a zoom as the Sigma Zoom 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 UC-II. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

What I miss in the K-1
1) A buffer size that is appropriate for K-1 files 2) A writing speed that is appropriate for K-1 files 3) A way to see the live view image in low light with rather high speed and stopped down aperture (e.g. a dark studio environment when shooting with flash units at say 1/200 F8). Just amplify that signal as you used to do in the K-3, instead of simulating an underexposure that won't happen! 4) A useful and comprehensive top LCD panel, just like the one on the K-3 (that's more useful to me than the multi-dial thing) 5) Dust Alert image. Where has it gone? All those features were present in the K-3 and lost in the K-1. Why? Most of all, why swapping the Play and LV buttons over previous models in the K-1? Whichever of the two (either LV or Play) you press by accident when looking through the viewfinder, you get the screen on in your face. Is Play any better than LV in that event? I don't think so. Actually, play/review is much better because all you need to do is lightly tap the shutter and it goes away. k-1 review lenses and other gear
lens selection and reviews: At the moment, most of the lenses I can’t afford on my wish list are made by sigma. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
k-1 review notes and questions
K-1 review revisited 14 March 2017 Nutshell review: While the K-1 has some nice additions and features over the K-3 II, if it wasn't for the full frame sensor angle of view and performance, I'd be a bit disappointed by it. Then again, that is like saying that if a Ferrari didn't have a V-12 engine and performance, I'd be a bit disappointed by it. The raw performance of the K-1 is very impressive but it takes a fair amount of knowledge and skill to make full use of that performance. My feeling, however, is that while the K-1 seems to require taking a lot of control to get the best performance out of it, the UI feels like it is optimized for people who shoot directly in JPEG in full automatic mode. Some points will crop up in more than one place in the more detailed comments below, that is because some issues will affect more than one aspect of camera use. Notes: They have expanded EV compensation and bracketing range, can bracket up to ± 5 ev in some situations Features that I'd like to see: I'd like arca swiss mount ridges as part of body, with removable caps. This way, rather than having to buy tripod mounting plates, they would already be there, and would be much more secure than if they were screwed on. I’d like them to replace the monochrome LCD on top of the body with a color display even if only vga resolution. I’d like to be able to choose between different auto exposure algorithms. I’d like an expose to the right mode that optimizes exposure for not blowing out highlights. Finding the celestial object you want to photograph in astrotracer can be a challenge. If I could reliably mount my cell phone to my camera pointing parallel to the lens axis, google sky map would be a big aiming aid. Even better yet, would be if they incorporated it into the camera’s software, and showed the google sky map image on the rear screen, even better yet would be if they could combine it with live view. I’d like to be able to transmit the preview image via wi-fi to a computer or tablet to facilitate real time reviewing of the image. Currently, in theory, I think this can be done by shooting raw on one card, jpeg on another, and transmitting the jpeg data over wifi. I don’t want to play games, I want RAW images to go to the card and would like to simply transmit previews (or jpegs) over wifi. I’d like to see an off camera flash that uses the same battery dli-90 battery format. I’d like to be able to use wifi to control external flashes, as long as it’s in the camera anyways. I’d like that control format to be a published standard. Questions: Does high iso noise reduction work on raw or just jpeg? What does ISO auto options actually mean? With numbers? In additive multi-exposure, is there a noise advantage of doing multiple short exposures versus one long one? Doing two 30 second exposures wouldn't trigger darkfield image like a 30 second exposure. Tethering in lightroom, via USB does actually store the files on the SD card. Lousy options for the fx1 button Why do they waste a four way button on jpeg processing nonsense? I need to figure out what user modes to set and use What is this multiple white balance? Does it work with RAW? Difficulty with selecting focus point in live view, it may be set to face recognition, couldn't find the menu to change it. k-1 review performance
Sensor: The sensor is pretty much the point of the K-1. The 24x36mm “full frame” sensor restores the full angle of view to legacy Pentax glass. Since the APS lens lineup is rather thin in fast standard and wide lenses, this can be a big thing for low light photography. Even on a per-pixel basis the sensor out performs the K-3 and K-5 sensors, so on that basis it’s a better APS camera either of the other two. I don’t know how it compares in APS mode with the newer APS bodies (K-P and K70). At 36 MP its pixel pitch is a bit larger than the 24 MP APS sensors, giving up a little bit of reach when cropping telephoto shots, however at 50MB per frame in raw, the same pixel pitch would give 48MP frames using up 75MB per shot. iso invariance: One of the major characteristics of the K-1 sensor is that it is ISO-invariant, which means that modulo clipping you will get nearly the same result if you shoot at a high ISO as if you shoot at a low ISO and brighten the image in post processing. So, why not just shoot at ISO 100 all of the time? That would pretty much make sure that you never clip your highlights. For one, it makes it nearly impossible to review the photo you took to check for problems. Another issue is that Lightroom has very limited range for correction, only about five stops. I also expect that if post processing did allow more correction the delta between theory and practice on ISO invariance would show up as noise, and possibly posterization in the shadows It would be nice to be able to underexpose raw, but compensate on previews... photographing musicians with colored backlights Bracketing ISO effectively does nothing. While I prefer shooting Tav mode, in Tav it only brackets ISO, it would be nice to set the bracketed variable separately from the exposure mode. Wide and standard full frame lenses work so much better: My FA 31ltd and FA50/1.4 are great lenses, but they never really inspired me on APS. On full frame however, I really quite enjoy using them. I always had mixed feelings about my Sigma 20/1.7. Sometimes I hated it, but only used it because it was the only fast lens I had in that angle of view, but sometimes it really worked quite well. On full frame it really became quite an interesting lens, although once I picked up the Rokinon 24/1.4 I’ve rarely used it. focus points: They have increased the number of focus points to 33, which is a big improvement. the narrower angle that each one operates at seems to also help prevent the camera from focusing on the wrong thing. However, they do not cover nearly enough of the frame. When photographing people, I often want to compose the shot with the person's eye well out of the area with all of the focus points. This means I cannot autofocus on the face and eyes if the person is moving around. The K-1 is a lot better at focusing on a musician rather than the microphone in front of them, quite likely because of the smaller active area of each focus point. By the same token, if I’m not careful to make sure the focus point is on the person I’m photographing, it can do an excellent job of focusing on the wall behind them. I should experiment more with the select-9 autofocus mode. Selecting focus points is not as graceful as I would like. I have heard that on other systems, the UI for focus point selection works better. When using manual focus, the in-focus indicator is very helpful at focusing the lens. It works great, but for some reason, it is limited to the center focus point. There is no reason to do this, and it makes manual focus lenses less usable for anything but landscape work, and even then there are problems with focus and recompose. Since there is a very limited selection of full frame lenses available right now, and many, if not most, of the people in a rush to buy the K-1 right away have a large selection of legacy manual focus glass, Ricoh should drop this restriction in the next firmware update. One can get some reprieve from the focus restrictions by using live view, but it is so slow to take a photo in live view, even with the focus locked, that it is unusable for any sort of dynamic scene. This has been alleviated somewhat with the firmware update that implemented electronic shutter. Auto focus speed and accuracy: When the autofocus works, it seems to work pretty well. Not nearly as well as Nikon. Sometimes though it just won't lock focus. This might be due to the narrower range that each focus point uses now. I should probably experiment more with the "auto 9" autofocus mode. In order to photograph action, I pretty much have to prefocus and lock out autofocus with the AF button. Bus speed The K-1 biggest shortcoming seems to be its bus speed. Saving files to the SD card takes far too long, and using fast SD cards doesn’t make a difference. I think I’ve seen that after about 40 Mbps, there is no advantage. buffer size The buffer size is woeful
Re: K-1 review rehash
Speaking of SR, all previous Pentax D-SLRs AFIK, including the 645Z, would automatically turn OFF the SR if you were in one of three shooting modes: Self-timer, Remote control, or Mirror Lock-up. Makes sense, in any of these modes you would be shooting from a tripod and everyone says to pretty much always turn SR off when on a tripod. However, there were those rare occasions when I might want to have SR on even though I was using a tripod and Remote. On the K-1, thank you Pentax!, there is an option to bypass the default auto shut-off of the SR. Speaking of the top dial, I miss the large top display which I was used to checking when adjusting settings while the camera was on a tripod. I keep telling myself that there must be a valid use for that dial but haven’t yet found a way to incorporate it into my “style” of shooting. Mostly I have it on +/- and then use the dedicated +/- button anyway for adjusting exposure comp. I have had no issues with inadvertent changes in the top dial setting nor with the Movie switch. I have mentioned before that I occasionally unknowingly hit the edge of the 4-way control with the heel of my hand, just the way I grip the camera. I recently went back and dug into the functionality of the Lock button. It solves my problem! I had avoided it, thinking that too many controls would be locked and that I would be frustrated with the need to futz around every time I wanted to adjust a control. It turns out that it is well designed, relatively limited scope. The strange decision to switch the location of the LV and Image Review buttons took a long time to get over, but I am finally at the point where I most often hit the right button. It validates my decision to sell all earlier-generation Pentax D-SLRs - I don’t think I could cope with using two bodies with mirror-image controls for these two functions. Some time ago I found that I could use my Apple watch as a remote control with the cameras on my iPhone. I used that once or twice. I decided I preferred hands on. I have not explored wifi etc with the K-1, partly because I can’t imagine why I would care, and partly because I assume that the bandwidth/speed would be too low to be useful. I could change my mind if I heard someone’s story of how they have used it to good purpose... Looking forward to your eight-months later thoughts Larry... stan > On Mar 15, 2017, at 7:37 AM, Paul Stenquist wrote: > > I like the double dial thing. It's also interesting to be reminded of all the features that I thought would be great that turned out to be useless duds, like wifi and tethering. Part of the problem with tethering is that it's useful in a studio, but then you might as well use a wire, you're better off at any reasonable frame rate, as wireless just doesn't have the bandwidth to handle big image files. WiFi is great for sharing low res images. Another issue is that from every review I've read of every camera that offers WiFi, camera makers just don't do WiFi applications very well. You might use WiFi more if the connecting apps were better or the images lower resolution, but why then are you shooting with a high res DSLR and not your phone? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: K-1 review rehash
I'd be interested in seeing your review. I can't say that I use the new dial much bu it doesn't seem to cause me any issues. The only interface change that has been driving me crazy is the switching of the LV and Play Back buttons, compared to the K3 and other prior models. I am always turning on LV when when I wan to check recent shots. Mark On 3/15/2017 3:37 AM, Larry Colen wrote: Eight months after I started it, I sat down to try and finish up my K-1 review. K-1 review rehash
Eight months after I started it, I sat down to try and finish up my K-1 review. I thought I sent it to the list, but it seems that the email monster ate it. If it never does show up, and people are interested, I'll give it another try, I'd certainly like to get some other viewpoints on some of the things I've noticed, or possibly answers to some of the questions still hanging. It's interesting to see how my perception of certain features has changed in the intervening time. When I first got it, I thought the third control dial was really awesome, but now I rarely use it. It's also interesting to be reminded of all the features that I thought would be great that turned out to be useless duds, like wifi and tethering. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
