GESO: Little Miracles 2

2018-01-30 Thread Alan C
After that crappy shot in half darkness I posted last night, I got another
chance this morning. I coaxed the family out from under a Pumbago bush with
some crushed maize. As you can see, still very dry with no rain in sight.

Week 4 PDML Photo Annual Update

2018-01-30 Thread Mark Roberts
Half way through the submission period and we're into the lull that
always comes between the initial rush and the last minute flail ;-)
Still, judging by the overall quality of the images we've received so
far I could probably put together a damn fine book right now...

Just a reminder: Everything stops on February 28 - Midnight GMT, 7:00
p.m. US Eastern time and 4:00 p.m. Pacific time. I have a busy
schedule this semester so we'll really be taking no more submissions
after the page shuts down.

Thanks to all those who made donations via the submission page. They
really help mitigate the out-of-pocket expense for me.

Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

2018-01-30 Thread John
I've given this a bit more thought and it seems to me you go to the same
place every time you go out to Hawaii. If that's true, might there be
someplace out there where you could store a tripod between visits?

Alternatively, you might consider shipping the tripod to where-ever you
are going to stay and have them hold it until you arrive; then shipping
it back just before you leave for home.

Years ago I framed the full moon between two palm trees, and I might try
that again.

Going up the mountain to the 10,000 foot level would probably get me above
the clouds, but it is a hell of a drive at night.

I will play around and see what develops. :)

I hear that some folks a Mauna Kea have some awesome telephoto lenses,
maybe they'd loan you one?

You seriously are not going to even be able to get close capturing shots
of the moon itself that folks with serious gear will be able to do. My
suggestion is that you find a place that would have some really nice night
time scenery to put in front of the moon and set up some night landscape
photos with the moon in the background. It should be in roughly the same
place about 40 minutes earlier tonight, so you could go do some
test/practice shots.

If you don't want to invest in a cheap tripod, you could make, or buy a
beanbag, and set up photos using that and the 2 second delay.

Alternatively, you could just not worry about trying to get an awesome
shot of this lunar eclipse, and enjoy the show.

Super Moon because it's close to perigee (appears about 7% larger).
Blue Moon because it's the second full moon in the month of January.
Blood Moon because it's going to be a total lunar eclipse.

It's a fairly rare thing for all three to occur during the same full
moon. The last time one was visible from North America was 150 years ago.

I think we're supposed to be able to see the beginning of the eclipse
from here on the east coast (of North America).

So, I am here, in the middle of the Pacific, and it suddenly dawns on me
that there will be a total eclipse of the moon, right over my head, in just
36 hours, and I am totally unprepared. Of course, the weather is still a
problem, but I would hate to miss such an opportunity.

I used to bring a tripod with me, but with the tighter baggage regulations,
I gave it up a few years back, first substituting a monopod and then one of
those 8' models that you can place on a table or wrap around a pole. This
year I have nothing.

Had I given it some thought, I would have brought a prime lens, or even my
old 500 mm reflector lens with an adapter.

Re: Week 4 PDML Photo Annual Update

2018-01-30 Thread ann sanfedele
I'm pretty sure I caught mine at a small but crowded gathering last
Saturday... the NY book launch
of the bio of my friend, poet James Wright. (James Wright, A LIfe in
Poetry) His (second) wife Anne, whose friendship wiht me has continued
over the years since Jims passing age in 1980. I first met them both in
1973. Her part at this particular signing and reading made it important
for me to go and not just dash in and get my book signed since I don't
get to see her much these days since she moved up to a senior residence
upstate in Rhinebeck.

There was a reception at Poets House following the reading of passages
by author Jonathan Blunk, by Annie
and poet/teacher/novelist Donna Masini - who had been Jim's student at
Hunter in the 70's.  The book was a
very long time coming... Blunk had been working on it for a very long
time.. .  I can only read it in small doses..
but it is nicely written.  I wish he read his own prose as well as he
writes.  Happily, Donna's turn at the microphone
telling stories and reading a couple of favorites made it a bit easier
to sit in the uncomfortable chairs.

Too much mingling at the reception.. too many hugs..etc.. sigh.. that
being said, not nearly as dangerous as
getting on plane in terms of picking up unwanted bugs  -  But Hawaii
-they- say is very low on flu monitor so thats in your favor.

I bet you guys can tell I just woke up from a nap (about the third one
today) - in chatty mode.

I did get my three pix in to Mark though...

Re: DA 40mm

2018-01-30 Thread P. J. Alling
The DA 40mm lenses are supposed to be exactly the same optical formula
as the old M 40mm f2.8, with more modern coatings.  I can't say whether
that's true or not, I have an old M version and didn't see any
particular reason to duplicate it with an AF version.  On the other had
the 40mm seems to be somewhat soft on the edges and corners wide open on
film, so you might see the same thing using a modern version on a FF camera.

Thanks all. Very little post-processing & only sharpened 1 click. There used
to be a lot of Guinea Fowl in town but I suspect many have been eaten in
recent years with the changes in demographics. Small, demi-domesticated
groups like these are hanging on.
