I actually had an image in my mind for this PUG, and finally had the time and
opportunity yesterday
to drive out there and make the shot with the K1 and the old (but compact!) FA
400mm

So mine is in as well now!

Re: Pentax Photo Gallery

2019-10-03 Thread John
Just a SWAG, but maybe they won't let you delete a lens from your gear list if
that lens was used on one of the photos that are already in your gallery. You
still "own" it as long as an image made with it is in your gallery.

Can you delete images from your own gallery?

4. Order of images. Until yesterday, all the images in my gallery
were sorted with the oldest image first. This made it extremely
difficult to tell im any were approved, as I had to scroll all the
way down. Now, the most recent images are at the head of each queue.
  This is much more convenient.

5. Premiere Collection. There have been no additions to this
excellent gallery of images since the gallery became active again.

Yes, there is no question of that, but this gives a feel for how noisy. By the
same token 200mm shots hand held slower than 1/60 second, or any shots of a
musician shot at slower than 1/60 tend to be a bit blurry. It’s a question of
making the best of a bad situation and what side of the exposure triangle do
you push harder on. I figure that with digital I have very little to lose by
trying for the shots, even if none turn out. Worst case I waste a dime’s worth
of hard drive after a night’s shooting, best case I get a keeper shot.

One thing I noticed many years ago is that if you convert a noisy digital shot
to black and white, the noise gives a retro high ISO film feel.

Here’s the same frame processed in black and white
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/48795253708/in/album-72157711063469821/

To my eye the noise is about the same as the grain in plus-X, not even Tri-X.

Is that frame technically strong enough for me to print out? Not really, and I
almost certainly wouldn’t hang it on my wall. However, for a lot of subjects,
that might be the cleanest photo they have of them doing whatever they love,
because things like dancing or playing music tend to happen in really crappy
light.

If I compare this with shots I took with my K100, I would guess it closer to
ISO 800 than 20,000.

A quick update on the PPG.

I just noticed that 2 of the images I submitted last week (of the Praying
Mantis on our pool deck) have been approved in the Gallery. I am wondering
about the voting process, as I still have a large number of images in the
"Pending Review" section, some going back to January 2018. I am glad,
however, to see that they are tabulating votes and approving images.

Re: High ISO questions

2019-10-03 Thread P. J. Alling
I actually add film grain to some images to give them more character.  I
found an image of a blank exposed and developed 35mm film, posted
somewhere on the internet, and add it as a layer to an image that I like
the composition of but seems to lack "something" and every once in a
while get a result that looks to my eye pretty good.  Better than the
imitation film grain that's offered by many plugins and for that matter
in DxOMark's film pack software.
