PESO Dance like noone's watching

2019-11-09 Thread Larry Colen
Personally, I think the phrase "Dance like noone's watching” makes about as
much sense as “Take photos as if nobody will ever look at them”. You can’t
live your life terrified of what others will think, but there are times when
it’s helpful to consider the audience.

Be that as it may, it did seem the perfect caption for this photo:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/49041750812/in/album-72157711715372386/

It was a live band night at a swing dance in Palo Alto last Wednesday, and I
spent some time playing with the camera. I learned that the 35/1.4 on the K-1
is a bit more finicky on focus point placement than I expected. With the
31/1.8 on the APS bodies, the shorter fl, smaller aperture and larger focus
points seemed to not only give it more depth of field, but also more likely to
focus on dancers in the foreground. In this hall, this setup did a marvelous
job of focusing on the paneling on the far wall. I need to work at being more
specific with single point focus, or maybe trying the select 9 and see how it
works.

For those that are interested, I posted them in order of social dancing,
musicians, competition and performance. The competition and performance are
not usual occurrences at the weekly dance.

too bad it is such a small gallery - "but what there is, is churce" :-)

I especially love Mark's Tate starcase,   Rick's Arch and  Ken's S at
GFM . I think I may have been in the vicinity when he took that shot.

A friend needed some photos, I pointed out that it’s the same amount of work to

Nice shot, I think it would be better with a bit more shadow detail.

All this shows is that you and I aren’t the same person.

I can understand the pleasure of shooting with film, particularly a very simple
film camera, but if that’s the effect I want, I’ve got plenty of them
collecting dust. If I want gritty loss of detail, I can always do that in post
processing, but I can’t recover detail that was never there. But, to each
their own.

I do.

The Fuji X20's sensor is a 12MP 2/3 inch CMOS so it's not a slouch, but obvs
outdated now.

I love this camera because of the optical viewfinder. It's not the snappiest
performer but if I carry one camera because I don't know what to photograph,
this'll be it.

I guess shooting like this is restricting because I'm narrowing my options. But
it makes me think high contrast and gritty, and so I tend to get that mindset
on and not look for things that don't fit.

I'm weird like that ;-)

Agree with all the above. I have a Fuji X20 (yes an optical viewfinder) and it
