RE: PESO: Cafe du Gaz

2020-04-21 Thread jcoyle
Try walking 10 minutes away from, for example, the Champs-Elysées, and you
should be able to find a very good meal at a bistro or restaurant (sometimes
labelled 'resto'). I have had some memorable meals at such places: choose the
ones where ou will get the last table, they're the ones the locals go to!

Yes, I realize that. On our first trip to Paris, I found it very difficult to
get anything for lunch except ham and cheese or cheese and ham sandwiches. We
had some great dinners at nice restaurants, but the lunches were all ham and
cheese. At the Eiffel Tower snack bar, they sold only cheeseburgers and hot
dogs, with pommes frites. I saw "sausage" on the menu, so I ordered it. It
was baloney in the shape of a hot dog on a hot dog roll.

In Normandy, the lunches were much better. There, they make great crepes for
lunch, unlike the tasteless ones offer in Paris.

Two of the greatest meals I ever had were dinners at Parisian restaurants, but
for lunch one might as well go to McDonald's.

Sorry, Ralf. Parisian lunches suck; all ham and cheese. Elsewhere in
France is quite different.

Just our of curiosity, we checked out a Parisian grocery once. They had
special racks with a separate indentation for each apple or peach. I
noticed a sign indicating a restaurant upstairs. I climbed the stairs to
look, and noticed several tables of businessmen in suits and ties. I
convinced my wife to go up there and give it a try, and it was the most
wonderful dinner we ever had, with menu items I had never imagined before.
I can't recall the name of the grocery, but I understand it is still there
but no longer operates that restaurant.

PESO 2020 - 078, 079, 080

2020-04-21 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Yesterday my time was absorbed for most of the day with some paperwork and
phone calls, and it was a chilly day with gusty winds. So I finally got out for
an isolation walk around 4:00pm. I carried the Polaroid SLR670a with color film
in it and made three exposures in my hour and a half walk...

Tree & Fence – Santa Clara 2020 :: https://flic.kr/p/2iSS86A

All with: Polaroid SLR670a + Polaroid Originals 600 Color.
Shooting with a Polaroid is so different from using almost any other kind of
camera. :D

Interesting how everything over your left shoulder appears to be in sharp focus.

I have a bunch of selfies from the first time I tried to take a photo with my
iPhone. Somehow I managed to get it switched to the front camera & took about a
dozen selfies trying to figure out how to switch it back.

The critter I was trying to photograph ran away before I figured it out, so I
never did get a photo of it.

Sometimes when I take the dog out at night it's so quiet it's eerie.

We can keep the windows open on the street side, all day, in the very
city centre. No noise, no car exhausts, no fumes from all the restaurant

This morning, I've heard a bird sing so charmingly, it was almost
unreal. No idea what it was, but I hadn't heard this particular kind

It is indeed beautiful, if only it weren't for all the wrong reasons.

I don’t think they would help with this. They are not individualised. I just
did the test on the supplier’s website and it said ‘strong red/green colour
blindness’, which I know of course, and recommended a particular range which
are supposedly good for people with weak, medium or strong red/green
colourblindness. I don’t see how that could bring every wearer’s colour vision
up to some reference standard, which is what would be required for critical
colour work.

Something that might work, if it were possible, would be the equivalent of
digital hearing aids. My hearing tests provide a profile of my hearing shown as
a graph of the differences from a reference hearing standard. The hearing aids
are programmed to receive the sound from the world and change them based on my
individual profile so that they enter my ears at the level of the reference
standard.

Non-digital hearing aids simply amplify everything, which is very crude. These
glasses appear to be something similar to analogue hearing aids.

That's a pretty good result for a proof sheet!

The film rebate is usually the best reference because you know it should be
clear film … thereby white if considered a positive, invert to pure black in
the actual positive. :)

Fun stuff, I'm glad to see how you're progressing with this technique. It's a
nice time savings to getting an reasonable index print so you know where to go
for finish capture.

(Yes, I don't know how you'd do finish rendering on color work if you're color
blind. I can imagine some numerical analyses, but …!! )

onwards!

2020-04-21 Thread Bob Pdml
Hi,

Yes, I thought the version from yesterday was ok.

Earlier today I re-did it using the rebate, and I think it’s better, and
repeatable. After I’d done it I realised why it works, and how rational it is -
as you describe. One of those things that’s obvious after the event.

I can’t do colour work that relies on my judgement - I will have to find a way
that works by numbers, or outsource it. I don’t think the volumes will be
particularly high, and it’s only negatives that matter, slides don’t really
require me to make any colour judgements.
