Interesting set, Larry. I notice your guinea fowl have white skin on

Re: Pentax FF v APS

2020-08-01 Thread Jos de Fotograaf
For me, the only remaining advantage of FF over smaller sensor size is
the smaller depth of field of FF, when this can be simulated nicely in
software, I will be ready to step over to smaller sensor sizes.
Mirrorless is the future, I think, as it gives more freedom to the lens
designer because no need for additional tricks to create room for the
mirror, so: better lenses at less costs.

I've been considering that with 4-5 years between the K-1 and the new aps
flagship, that's like three Moore's law cycles, almost 4, and in theory one
moore's law cycle would account for the performance difference betwen aps and
FF in sensor performance. The K-3 already outperforms the K-1 in terms of frame
rate and buffer size. If it's really going to be flagship level, they should
take all of the improvements in autofocus, and expand on them. By the time the
dust settles, if they do it right, I'd expect that the only advantage the K-1
will retain is a wider angle of view on full frame lenses, and for some, the
larger body would fit better in their hands.

I also know that if they even hint at a K-1 successor before the new aps is
released, it would torpedo the sales of the aps. I do, however, hope that
there is a new ff body in the pipeline, and that it will be released as soon as
they can after the aps.

Re: What PENTAX Values Most in Future Cameras - more info on new APS-C flagship

2020-08-01 Thread Rick Womer
I am very happy with my K-5, but am still looking forward to the K-new (as
usual, I will wait a year before buying so that other people can identify the
bugs).

I would very much like an articulating rear screen, though. I have missed some
close-to-ground-level macro shots because there wasn’t room, or too much mud,
to stretch out to see the screen. I have shot several events where it would
have been very useful for over-the-heads shots, too.

My wife has a K-70, and I like the size and weight, but I find the user
interface difficult unless one just wants straight “auto”.

Re: What PENTAX Values Most in Future Cameras - more info on new APS-C flagship

2020-08-01 Thread P. J. Alling
It depends on your vision of state of the art, as I've said, while I
don't have anything against an adjustable rear screen, either the one on
the back of the K-1 or the fully articulating screen on, K-70 and K-P,
but, it is more fragile and therefor something else you can break, and I
seem to be able to break nearly anything.

It would be more convenient, but given the the cost of a K70 these days,
(or it's upcoming successor), I think I'd get a one of them for whenever
I really needed to use the flip out screen and use the solid body camera
most of the time to lessen my chances of breaking the screen completely
off, (I'm surprised I've never broken the pop up flash off a camera, but
heck, I have several with that device and the day is still young).

I bet therefore that the final version of the new flagship will have
it too.
The two videos demonstrate that Ricoh/Pentax put so much focus on the
new non-mirrorless APS-C flagship for their fate in the coming years.
To compete with other top APS-C cameras such as of Fujifilm all
features should therefore be state of the art.

Trying it like this. The e-mail won't go throgh.

A large anthill with a built in timber supply & a typical sand river.
All the tributaries around here look like this in the dry season. The
sand beds can be several metres deep on top of the bedrock. The rivers
still flow below the surface through the sand. Elephants dig wells &
extract the exposed water with their trunks. The pool in this shot is
occupied by a solitary hippo.

I haven't posted any shots but we "intersected" two herds of at least
500 Buffalo & a slightly smaller herd of Wildebeest all headed to
drinking spots on a river. You just have to be patient & wait!

Yesterday we went on a day Lockdown excursion to Mopani Camp situated about 100km N
of the Phalaborwa Gate in the Kruger Park. We were self sufficient (just in case)
but were treated like royalty when we, the sole visitors, arrived. Lunch on the
Fish Eagle Terrace was a memorable occasion. A few shots: The impressive entrance
with Baobab tree; An immigrant - English House Sparrow; A worker busy painting the
wooden terrace structure with creosote (there was recently a bad accident when part
of the terrace collapsed because of termite damage) & a 4-frame Pano of Pioneer
Dam. Regrettably the two bird hides at the other side of the dam are still
off-limits. Please scroll along.

All with the K5 & HD 55-300

Perhaps I will do another post with some of the animals we encountered.

Re: Pentax FF v APS

2020-08-01 Thread Henk Terhell
It will be a challenge for Ricoh/Pentax to frame a new FF DSLR successor
to the K-1.
But I don't doubt that there is a  future for FF though the camera
market is shrinking.
The trend for FF consumer models is now set by Canon EOS RP and Nikon Z5
with a price below that of fully featured APS-C's.
Now mirrorless FF cameras are getting so cheap and compact (not the
lenses) many amateurs will be turning to FF.

2020-08-01 Thread Henk Terhell
All Pentax FF and APS-C DSLR cameras (and those of competitors) have a
movable screen in 2020 and there is no reason not to have it for new models.

I bet therefore that the final version of the new flagship will have it too.
The two videos demonstrate that Ricoh/Pentax put so much focus on the
new non-mirrorless APS-C flagship for their fate in the coming years.
To compete with other top APS-C cameras such as of Fujifilm all features
should therefore be state of the art.

There is a follow-up video from Ricoh/Pentax.
The new APS-C is claimed to have a new penta-prism, improved grip, new
shutter, better image quality and also a silver model (also for star
lenses and K-1 mark II)
No details on date of introduction.
I still have no clue on whether the back LCD panel is fixed or not.
