be interested in a 6’ long telescope because it was in a house that was
part of an estate and they needed to rehome it. Would probably be
affordable, she said. I was put in touch with the disposal person and asked
how affordable “affordable” might be. They said they were hoping to get
$50. I said I could do that and it was in my possession within the hour.

The telescope is a homemade Dobsonian with a 12” mirror and mirror coatings
that by themselves was $200. The scope has a Moonlight Crawford focused
that is worth $300-400. All together everything is worth an easy $2K. 😳

Here are the Pentax pieces:

They are worth around $200 each (used).

The 12” diameter is going to be a major upgrade from my 8” dob, allowing me
to see much fainter objects!

Re: Dumb storage question.

2022-05-03 Thread John Sessoms
*IF* I had not already purchased most of the components to build my
home-built file server I would have gone with a Synology 5-bay NAS box
when they first became available.

I like the Seagate IronWolf drives & you could get the current "Synology
5-bay NAS DiskStation DS1520+ (Diskless)" + 5x4TB drives for about
$1,100 USD and with WD Red 4TB drives for about $1,115 USD.

(The WD drives are $3 more than the Seagate)

... plus shipping, tax & whatever fees Canada imposes on imports from
the U.S.

That's about what I spent to build my home-built file server, although I
also have 5x2TB drives in addition to the 5x4TB drives.

Synology DS1520+:
https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=Synology+5-bay+NAS+DiskStation+DS1520%2B

Drives:
https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100167523%20600374777%20600457700

It also looks like you can buy one with the drives already installed for
about $800 - $1,000 more than buying the diskless one and installing the
drives yourself.

If I were starting all over I'd get the Synology instead of building my own.

Ditto what the guys said...

and Ralf, your photo of the white cliffs of Ault , Stan's B&W Denali and
Jostein's well eroded colorful scene are my personal favorites ,but the
whole gallery is so interesting and diverse. Was a bit surprised not to
see entries from a couple of people who frequently have shown very
geology approrpiate shots - notably Larry and Ken .

The open is going to be the most challenging for me - so har to make  up
my mind these days about anything one needs limits :-)

An even bigger gallery this month. Great work!

Enjoy the new gallery here:

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not

let me know.

The theme for June is No Theme! It's an Open Gallery so go for it!
