PESOs (4) - Laurel Hill Hearse

2022-05-30 Thread Rick Womer
Our photo class visited Laurel Hill Cemetery last week. It was founded in 1836
on the outer fringe of Philadelphia, but of course it has been engulfed by the
city over the decades.

In front of the administration building is this antique Pontiac hearse, which
attracted photographic interest. Note the brackets holding the wing mirrors.

RE: PESOs (4) - Laurel Hill Hearse

2022-05-30 Thread jcoyle
I'm not sure it was ever used for funerals! The skeletal hand mirror brackets
and the slogan on the side window suggest a somewhat
jokey design - and the two-tone jars a bit too! But, good subject.

Unusually big meteor shower tonight ?

2022-05-30 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All,

I've just heard on the news that they except one-in-life-time meteor
shower tonight (US time), - with the peak between 12:45am (Tuesday) EDT

and 1:something (30? 50?)am.

They expect up to 1000 "shooting stars" per hour rate.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned it here...

I hope this message coudl be useful to someone

Tau Herculids, could be awesome or could fizzle.

Tori and friends

2022-05-30 Thread Larry Colen
You may remember that last summer a friend of mine bought a ’59 Singer Gazelle
and I helped her getting running well enough to take it to a local British Car
show, and then towed it down to her place in Watsonville. In the intervening
time Tori has done a lot of work on the car, including body work (with a little
help) and repainting (her first paint job). The car isn’t likely to win the
Concourse at Pebble Beach, but it’s still an impressive achievement. Damned
impressive in fact.

I was heading to a party about 20 minutes from her on Saturday and hadn’t seen
the car for several months so I stopped by to get some photos of it. She asked
me to take it for a short drive, during which the cable for the column shifter
came loose, so I manually moved it to have 3rd and 4th rather than 1st and 2nd,
drove back, fixed it, and suggested that for the next round of photos she
replace her gimme cap with some sort of scarf. She went one better and put on
a bit of a pinup costume.

The full sunlight was a bit of a challenge, but we did have some pretty clouds
in the background.

For those that just want one photo:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52111568366/in/album-72177720299395937/

For those that want the full set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720299395937

You may note that some of the photos are not of a ’59 Gazelle, but of a ’38
Minx. The person that sold the Gazelle to ths car lot she bought it from is a
bit of a Rootes group fanatic. I had first heard of Doug when I was working
with his brother Mike, about 20 years ago, and Mike mentioned that Doug had
“Tigerized” a Hillman Husky. An idea that had crossed my mind on more than one
occasion when I was driving a girlfriend’s husky back in college.

Tori connected with Doug, a very handy resource because he had done a lot of
mechanical restoration on Nigel (the Gazelle). It turned out that Doug had a
’38 Minx sitting around, but not the resources to fix it up, along with all of
his other projects. That is going to be Tori’s next project.

For reference, the “before” photos of Nigel, when we were fixing it up at my
house:

And the day of the car show:

A couple of people on facebook have mentioned that the meteor shower, while not
a storm, is worth checking out.

That's a very nice set, Larry, but I must say I was wondering about the

The intent was indeed to get photos of Nigel, but it was fun the way the scope
of the project increased.

I’m quite happy with the way the photos turned out.
