There are a few pictures of a little boy in an orange t-shirt that didn't turn out well, but I included them anyway for the benefit of his parents, whom I met while taking pictures and told them I'd post them. Otherwise, I think most of the photos turned out pretty well. There are 61 images in all -- mostly of good ol' American muscle car horsepower. http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157624712518913/detail/ (All shots take with my K-x -- the vast majority with the 18-55mm kit lens in aperture priority.) Re: upcoming theater shoot
Christine, When I shot for a theater in Bristol,Pa They did not want me to make any noise at all,not even shutter release noise. So I would take the photos at a louder part of the play to hide the noise from the shutter. Also I was upstairs on the second floor. This was shot with film and the Lx body, But I used fast glass. 85mm F1.4, 135mm F1.8, 200mm F2.5 and 300mm F2.8. The film was either Fuji Press 800asa rated at 1200 and 1600 if needed, also Tmax 400 rated at 800 and 1600asa, along with Tmax 3200 asa. For stills after the play I would use Kodak 400 and Fuji 400. These are just some of the films, I would use at different plays. You can always wait for a slow scene in the play if you do not want to use a high iso. Also maybe they will have a piano or something like that to pose the group around.. Hope this info helps. Joe P.S Look at the lights and see where the lights fall on the stage and maybe some of the actors will be more under those lights, and you will get a better shot. But if you are not going to try to shoot while watching the play, forget about what I said. - Original Message - From: Christine Aguila cagu...@earthlink.net To: pdml@pdml.net Sent: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 00:25:12 - (UTC) Subject: upcoming theater shoot Hi Everyone: I've been asked to photograph scenes from the play My Sister Eileen which will open tomorrow night at a university near by. The shoot will take place after a Friday night performance, and the producer said normally the shoot is about an hour long. The cast is small (9), so I think I've a wide enough lens for a cast group shot. I've requested a comp ticket, so I can see the show before the shoot, and they've kindly agreed. I'll be looking for good dramatic scenes, of course, and I've been told that there's nothing exotic about the lighting direction for this play--just standard stage lighting. Has anyone had experience doing theater shoots? Any tips or suggestions you'd be willing to share? Thanks in advance. Re: Noise with K7
Well I am glad that my NOISE post is still alive. It is bad that Pentax did not make a better sensor for the K7. If they could do it in the KX, why not the K7. I guess the money issue (make more money with the K7 first and then bring out the KX and by this time most people have already bought the K7 and so now they will buy the KX. I have been reading the posts about the noise with the K7, with my K7 even at 100 iso, the noise is bad. Like I stated before that some of my photos were not used because of the noise. I have been fooling with Neat Image Pro and the noise filter in Photoshop and also the noise filter by Topaz. Topaz takes the longest to filter the noise.. My results have been pretty good but like someone else on the list said this is just an extra step. About buying Nikon gear, I do have a couple bodies but they are not new. The D1x is a very good body with very nice color and low noise. Also this body will sync at up to 500th of a second with any flash. I guess if I did not have so much money in Pentax glass, I would switch maybe. I have shot with Pentax gear since about 1975. I have used the Pentax gear to photograph US Presidents, major league sports, NHRA and IHRA Drag racing. News events, Spot news and just about anything a photojournalist would shoot. Even when I worked for the newspaper, I used my Pentax gear instead of the company Nikon gear. I had better glass. When newspapers were switching to digital, first we had the big Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies. Since Pentax never released the first digital body that they showed at the camera shows, I was forced to use the Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies, Next we went to the Nikon D1 bodies which was 2.7 Megs. It would shoot five frames per second and would sync at up to 500th. of a second, but color was always a killer, meant more time on the computer. At that time I bought some nikon gear and glass. But I still shot with my Pentax film bodies when I had the chance. So in ending my longest post on the list, I do hope Pentax will bring out a nice killer body with very very good low light. - Original Message - From: paul stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 2010 9:12:35 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: Noise with K7 On Jun 23, 2010, at 9:02 PM, Rob Studdert wrote: On 24 June 2010 08:59, paul stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net wrote: The Kx would definitely be better for low light applications. Larry, Paul is correct in what he says. You will also need a tech sheet filled out by the owner and have him or her sign it, which also give the magazine permission to publish the photos. You'll have a much better chance of selling the pics if you can write an article as well. You'll want to shoot the cars in an open area in either very early morning or very late evening light. The backgrounds should be clean. Trees are okay, but its best if they are far enough from the cars that they'll be out of focus. Architectural backgrounds are okay, but you have to know how to work with them. Shooting the cars in the guys shop is almost certainly a no-sell. He is specifically being accused of striking one of the officers. Anybody who has seen the two previous videos where Donnelly was confronted by federal officers in front of a courthouse will find these charges hard to believe. After all, Donnelly has a tendency to remain courteous even when getting threatened with violence. Nevertheless, the federal government is charging him with assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain United States Government officers or employees, which carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison. The evidence, of course, lies in the videotape they confiscated from him. We’ll be lucky if that ever makes the light of day. He attempted to retrieve it, but they they threw George to the ground. Then they decided to arrest him for assault. They were joined by a 7th marshal. Heicklens states that Donnelly was released after spending two days in jail, forced to wear an electronic bracelet because he was unable to meet the $50,000 bail. Last month, Donnelly was harassed twice for videotaping outside a federal courthouse, including one time when a federal officer got into his face and stated the following: “If you get too close to me with that camera, I’ll take it out of your hand and ram it down your throat” Although this was clearly a physical threat and there is no doubt who it came from, the officer was never disciplined because he was still working his beat since then, according to an interview with Donnelly a couple of weeks back. The second time he was harassed, a different set of officers threatened to confiscate his camera. Both times, he responded politely yet firmly, insisting that he was not breaking any laws, which he wasn’t. So I’m looking forward to see how he responded in the video we have

What killed photography was digital cameras, because now everyone is a photographer, even with their point and shoot.Heck, I still have my color darkroom setup and a fridge full of film. There was a smiley at the end of that sentence, after all. For myself, my percentage of keepers has gone up only slightly because my standards have risen. What I might have considered a keeper before I started shooting digital, I wouldn't consider one now. But you're right, that it's not just the number of the keepers, but the quality. Remember that link I posted about the stages of a photographer? While at the same time, I'm more willing to take chances, to try and make images I wouldn't have thought I could make before ... because the few times I did try to make them I failed. This is certainly true with my photography. I'm at the stage where I can usually get the shot, by experimenting seven ways from Sunday, and bracketing in three dimensions. I'm afraid that I'm not yet to the point where I can usually just go in and nail a shot on the first try, though it is often one of the first tries that does end up being the best. It is amazingly helpful to not only be able to bracket to get the shot, but to be able to look at all the attempts and learn from them. Unfortunately, I'm also still at the point where the most effective way of improving the quality of my work is learning to throw away more of it. I can see right away whether the image matches my vision; whether I got the shot. And it has benefited my film shooting as well. Maybe not as many keepers from film as I used to get, but the ones I do get are better. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Interestingly it is not apparent in live view. I've run the pixel mapping routine several time with no affect on this spot. It evidences itself as a noticeable bright spot near the RH edge of the image (in landscape orientation), with a vertical black line from top to bottom running thru the spot. Its close enough to the RH edge that it can be cropped out with only a small loss of image size, but I don't want to have to crop every image. Re: false focus?
Auto Focus is just for that quick shot, where you just grab your camera and shoot. We as photographers should not be using auto focus. If you look at my photos on my page on Photo.net all my photos are shot with manual focus except the photos that say test under them, that were shot with the 70 - 200 mm Simga lens. Now I understand when someone's eyes are not as good as they used to be, you will tend to use auto focus, but they do make contact lens and the like to improve your eyes. We as photographers and people are getting lazy and not using our brains.Sorry if I offended anyone on the list. I will admit there is times when I try the auto focus, but I go back to manual focus all the time...Joe www.photo.net/photos/pjjdxn Subject: Re: false focus? My K20D front focused with the FA 50/1.4. A lot of the shots with that lens seem to be way out of focus. Are any lenses particularly prone to tricking the camera into thinking that they are in focus, when they actually aren't? I don't seem to have this problem on other lenses. It doesn't seem to be a motion blur issue. I was shooting tonight, in raw, in several modes of high iso noise reduction at ISO 3200. At first glance it doesn't seem to make any difference, though I'll still have to test more scientifically. I got a call from Mark Davis at Pentax today to discuss my issues. Without looking at my pictures he seemed to think that my camera sounded like it was performing nominally. After the conversation, I emailed him the links, with explanations, to my various test sets, but I haven't heard back. A lot of frustrating things may be happening with my camera, many of them quite likely my doing, but I must commend Pentax, and especially John C, because they seem to be making every reasonable, and perhaps even some more than reasonable, effort to resolve the issue. Doug, you could look at the 70-200 MM F2.8 Simga HSM II Lens. I bought one and like it so far. With a 1.4 convert, it will become a 120 mm to 300 mm F4.0. Not as pricey as the 50-250 Pentax unit. I do not have the 50-250 lens but there is one thing I do not like. That is the way the lens opens up. long barrel comes out from main part. I could be wrong. I know Paul has one, ask him about that.To me that might and will get in the way when I shoot sports in a location where there are other photographers trying to get the same shot..I would rather have an internal focus lens..Joe P.S. here are a couple of shot taken with the Simga just after I received it. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=9262999 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=9401091 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=9262974 - Original Message - From: William Robb war...@gmail.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Thursday, July 9, 2009 9:51:17 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: I've got a hole in me arsenal - Original Message - From: Doug Brewer Subject: I've got a hole in me arsenal so I'm looking at either the DA Star 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM or the DA Star 60-250mm F4 ED (IF) SDM and the prices are way different, 500 smackers worth at BH. Is the 60-250 really that much better, and keep in mind that linear thought and I rarely collide. For the difference, I could also get the 21Ltd and a grip for the K-7. What to do, what to do? Doug, I didn't have to make the decisions you made, as I already have the 21mm. I haven't handled the 50-135 all that much. I had a pre production unit on loan from Pentax Canada (via my pusher) for a while sometime before the lens was officially released to the world, and that is my only experience with it. I thought it was an excellent lens, but also a lens that shared the same problem that I think 80-200mm lenses have on the 135 format, which is that they just don't have enough reach for my taste. I have an 80-200/2.8 lens which is just about the perfect telephoto zoom on the cropped sensor camera, but for the size, a little more reach would be nice. This was why I was so impatient about the 60-250. The 60-250, I am sure you have handled one, is a pretty chunky lens. Much bigger, IIRC than the 50-135. As far as optical quality is concerned, I doubt that there is a great deal of difference between the 50-135 and the 60-250. Both are fine optics. I wanted the extra reach, so I chose to wait for the 60-250. No regrets, it's a terrific optic. I guess, think back to your film days, did you find that often the 80-200 range of zooms was to be too short to float your boat? If so, then the 60-250 is the answer, no doubt about it. It has plenty of reach. Having said this, I couldn't live without the vertical grip now for what I shoot. I've been doing a fair number of model shoots, and in this type of photography the vertical camera orientation is what I use almost all the time. The grip rules. However, if you spend most of your time shooting landscapes off a tripod, there is no pressing reason to get the grip, so it comes down to the 21mm lens. Do you favour wide angle shots or long telephoto shots more? Does your photography style allow for stiched images? If so, then you can use a longer lens most of the time to emulate the 21. I suspect that for most people, the 50-135 coupled with the DA21 will probably be the more useful lens combination.. I had a pre production unit on 2cn loan from Pentax Canada (via my pusher) for a while sometime before the lens 2cn was officially released to the world, and that is my only experience with 2cn it. 2cn I thought it was an excellent lens, but also a lens that shared the same 2cn problem that I think 80-200mm lenses have on the 135 format, which is that 2cn they just don't have enough reach for my taste. 2cn I have an 80-200/2.8 lens which is just about the perfect telephoto zoom on 2cn the cropped sensor camera, but for the size, a little more reach would be 2cn nice. 2cn This was why I was so impatient about the 60-250. 2cn The 60-250, I am sure you have handled one, is a pretty chunky lens. Much 2cn bigger, IIRC than the 50-135. 2cn As far as optical quality is concerned, I doubt that there is a great deal 2cn of difference between the 50-135 and the 60-250. Both are fine optics. I 2cn wanted the extra reach, so I chose to wait for the 60-250. 2cn No regrets, it's a terrific optic. 2cn I guess, think back to your film days, did you find that often the 80-200 2cn range of zooms was to be too short to float your boat? If so, then the 2cn 60-250 is the answer, no doubt about it. It has plenty of reach. 2cn Having said this, I couldn't live without the vertical grip now for what I 2cn shoot. I've been doing a fair number of model shoots, and in this type of 2cn photography the vertical camera orientation is what I use almost all the 2cn time. 2cn The grip rules. 2cn However, if you spend most of your time shooting landscapes off a tripod, 2cn there is no pressing reason to get the grip, so it comes down to the 21mm 2cn lens. 2cn Do you favour wide angle shots or long telephoto shots more? 2cn Does your photography style allow for stiched images? If so, then you can 2cn use a longer lens most of the time to emulate the 21. 2cn I suspect that for most people, the 50-135 coupled with the DA21 will 2cn probably be the more useful lens combination.. 2cn William Robb 2cn -- 2cn PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List 2cn PDML@pdml.net 2cn http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net 2cn to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly 2cn above and follow the directions. 2cn -- 2cn PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List 2cn PDML@pdml.net 2cn http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net 2cn to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly 2cn above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net

I added three more shots to my Flowers folder. http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=918347 All three shot with D200, Tamron 90 f2.8 macro and sRGB colour space set in camera. Not sure i like this set up. I had to do a lot of LR luminance and saturation to get the colours close. It seems nice enough on the flash shots i did of the kitchen after i stripped the paper off, as before shots. The colours seem pretty close, but the flower shots are all flat. I was tempted to go with one system as opposed to the two i have now, but i'm happier with my K10D for flowers and close up photos, the colour seems more vibrant. Although it could also be the D200, i've never been happy with the camera. No setting seems to give me nice colours and sharpness at the same time. So, Nikon for action, Pentax for landscapes and macros. Oh, Canon for IR. Looks like its a three system house then. The Nikon Coolscan's are also good and only a bit more on the used market. The Nikon 4000 and 5000 are king, but cost like it too. For Medium Format or sheet film, I recommend the Epson's. V500 for MF and V700/V750 for a do-everything scanner. Betterscanning.com 120 holders and ANR inserts are also well worth investing in as the Epson 120 holder is flimsy and poor at holding film flat. Other options are even better, but have serious costs (Nikon 8000 or 9000, Imacons). I have to agree with Adam's selection though the Minolta AF-5400 II is a worthy contender for best 35mm film scanner IMO. I own the Konica Minolta AF-5400 II, Epson Perfection V700 Photo and the Nikon LS-8000 ED, each do what they do very well, that's why I have one of each. -- Rob Studdert HURSTVILLE AUSTRALIA Tel +61-2-9554-4110 UTC +10 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
