Subject: GESO: Sikeston, Missouri Drag Strip

  Hi all,

Just wanted to share a set of photos I took yesterday on my first trip
to the Sikeston Drag Strip this year. There are a few pictures of a
little boy in an orange t-shirt that didn't turn out well, but I
included them anyway for the benefit of his parents, whom I met while
taking pictures and told them I'd post them. Otherwise, I think most of
the photos turned out pretty well. There are 61 images in all -- mostly
of good ol' American muscle car horsepower.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157624712518913/detail/

(All shots take with my K-x -- the vast majority with the 18-55mm kit
lens in aperture priority.)

Comments and critiques are, of course, welcome.

Best,

Walt

Re: upcoming theater shoot

2010-07-21 Thread 272yb
Christine, When I shot for a theater in Bristol,Pa They did not want me to make
any noise at all,not even shutter release noise. So I would take the photos at
a louder part of the play to hide the noise from the shutter. Also I was
upstairs on the second floor. This was shot with film and the Lx body, But I
used fast glass. 85mm F1.4, 135mm F1.8, 200mm F2.5 and 300mm F2.8. The film was
either Fuji Press 800asa rated at 1200 and 1600 if needed, also Tmax 400 rated
at 800 and 1600asa, along with Tmax 3200 asa. For stills after the play I would
use Kodak 400 and Fuji 400. These are just some of the films, I would use at
different plays. You can always wait for a slow scene in the play if you do not
want to use a high iso. Also maybe they will have a piano or something like
that to pose the group around.. Hope this info helps. Joe
P.S Look at the lights and see where the lights fall on the stage and maybe
some of the actors will be more under those lights, and you will get a better
shot. But if you are not going to try to shoot while watching the play, forget
about what I said.

Subject: upcoming theater shoot

Hi Everyone:

I've been asked to photograph scenes from the play My Sister Eileen which
will open tomorrow night at a university near by. The shoot will take place
after a Friday night performance, and the producer said normally the shoot
is about an hour long. The cast is small (9), so I think I've a wide enough
lens for a cast group shot. I've requested a comp ticket, so I can see the
show before the shoot, and they've kindly agreed.

I'll be looking for good dramatic scenes, of course, and I've been told that
there's nothing exotic about the lighting direction for this play--just
standard stage lighting. Has anyone had experience doing theater shoots?
Any tips or suggestions you'd be willing to share?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Christine

Re: Noise with K7

2010-06-29 Thread 272yb
Well I am glad that my NOISE post is still alive. It is bad that Pentax did not
make a better sensor for the K7. If they could do it in the KX, why not the K7.
I guess the money issue (make more money with the K7 first and then bring out
the KX and by this time most people have already bought the K7 and so now they
will buy the KX.
I have been reading the posts about the noise with the K7, with my K7 even at
100 iso, the noise is bad. Like I stated before that some of my photos were not
used because of the noise. I have been fooling with Neat Image Pro and the
noise filter in Photoshop and also the noise filter by Topaz. Topaz takes the
longest to filter the noise.. My results have been pretty good but like someone
else on the list said this is just an extra step.
About buying Nikon gear, I do have a couple bodies but they are not new. The
D1x is a very good body with very nice color and low noise. Also this body will
sync at up to 500th of a second with any flash.
I guess if I did not have so much money in Pentax glass, I would switch maybe.
I have shot with Pentax gear since about 1975. I have used the Pentax gear to
photograph US Presidents, major league sports, NHRA and IHRA Drag racing. News
events, Spot news and just about anything a photojournalist would shoot. Even
when I worked for the newspaper, I used my Pentax gear instead of the company
Nikon gear. I had better glass. When newspapers were switching to digital,
first we had the big Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies. Since Pentax never released the
first digital body that they showed at the camera shows, I was forced to use
the Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies, Next we went to the Nikon D1 bodies which was 2.7
Megs. It would shoot five frames per second and would sync at up to 500th. of a
second, but color was always a killer, meant more time on the computer. At that
time I bought some nikon gear and glass. But I still shot with my Pentax film
bodies when I had the chance.
So in ending my longest post on the list, I do hope Pentax will bring out a
nice killer body with very very good low light.

Larry, Paul is correct in what he says. You will also need a tech sheet filled
out by the owner and have him or her sign it, which also give the magazine
permission to publish the photos. Also know as an release/tech form. I have if
you need it. Magazines like Car craft, Hot Rod will have their own forms for
you to use.

Talk to the magazines first. Go to a bookstore and find some specialty mags
that feature similar cars and query the editors. Show them the pics you took
previously. You'll have a much better chance of selling the pics if you can
write an article as well.

You'll want to shoot the cars in an open area in either very early morning or
very late evening light. The backgrounds should be clean. Trees are okay, but
its best if they are far enough from the cars that they'll be out of focus.
Architectural backgrounds are okay, but you have to know how to work with them.
Shooting the cars in the guys shop is almost certainly a no-sell. Check out the
kind of photography the magazines you're querying feature.

2010-06-17 Thread 272yb
Has anyone noticed noise when shooting at low (100 iso) settings with their K7 ?
Look at your photos at 100-200 percent and see if you notice any. I have had
some photos turned down because of noise. Thanks Joe
P.S. The K20 does not seem to do this.

Re: Noise with K7

But when you play with noise suppression, it sort of make the photo a little
soft. ??
Like I said before, my k20d does not have this happen. Even my D1x does not do
it and that camera is about 10-12 years old

Indeed, when I switched to K7 from *istDS, my first impression that
the latitude of the K7 was smaller, as the noise was showing up in the
shadows. In case of underexposed images, it is harder to push the
levels up. And despite overall more accurate exponometry of the K7,
it often fails when working with the flash, - sometimes I have
to do +1 or even +2 EV.

On another hand, I just had a chance of trying LR3 - it has very nice
noise supression tool.

Yeah, right, I notice some noise at ISO 200 in rather dark areas. It does
not bother me to the slightest, but I imagine that someone can turn a photo
 down because of it.

Bloglines user quackn (dqu...@thegrid.net) has sent this item to you, with the
following personal message:

He is supposed to have no contact with co-defendants. What a violation of due
process rights, if true. A defendant is entitled under the 6th Amendment to
investigate his own case and that includes witnesses, included co-defendants.
Further, it is permissible to engage in a joint defense.

Photography is Not a Crime
Shining a Light on First Amendment, Media and Police Issues

Penn. activist facing 8 years in prison after videotaping officers
outside courthouse
By Carlos Miller on Pennsylvania

By Carlos Miller
George Donnelly, the Pennsylvania videographer who was arrested last week for
videotaping federal officers in front of an Allentown courthouse, is facing
eight years in prison for his deed.

He is specifically being accused of striking one of the officers.

Anybody who has seen the two previous videos where Donnelly was confronted by
federal officers in front of a courthouse will find these charges hard to
believe.

After all, Donnelly has a tendency to remain courteous even when getting
threatened with violence.

Nevertheless, the federal government is charging him with assaulting,
resisting, or impeding certain United States Government officers or employees,
which carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.

The evidence, of course, lies in the videotape they confiscated from him. We’ll
be lucky if that ever makes the light of day.

When contacted by Photography is Not a Crime today, Donnelly said he was not
commenting about his case.

But Libertadedia , described as the libertarian encyclopedia, offers detailed
information obtained from court records.

The site states he has been subjected to the following conditions under house
arrest, even though he has not been convicted:

• Bail in the amount of $50,000
• Defendant shall submit to random drug testing as directed by pretrial
services
• Defendant shall undergo drug/alcohol treatment if necessary, as
determined by pretrial services
• Defendant shall submit to electronic monitoring
• Defendant must obtain a land line
• Defendant may drive to food store three times per week, and must submit
receipts to pretrial services, with prior approval of pretrial services
• Travel restricted to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
• Defendant shall surrender and/or refrain from obtaining or applying for a
passport
• Defendant shall surrender and/or refrain from obtaining any firearms
• Defendant shall have no contact with co-defendants in this case, or
individuals engaged in any criminal activity
• Defendant may not publicize names, images or locations of officers or
release information to anyone else

Donnelly was arrested on May 11th when he was accompanying activist Julian
Heicklens who was passing out literature on jury nullification .

This is how Heicklens describes the incident:

At 12:10 pm, six federal marshals approached us in a confrontational manner and
said we could not pass out literature nor take pictures. They stood right in
front of each of us, no more than 6 inches away, so that we could not
communicate with passersby. These were 6 of the most obnoxious people I have
ever met.
We asked the marshals to identify themselves, but they refused. We would not
identify ourselves.

George attempted to take a picture, but they seized George’s camera. He
attempted to retrieve it, but they they threw George to the ground. Then they
decided to arrest him for assault. They were joined by a 7th marshal.

Heicklens states that Donnelly was released after spending two days in jail,
forced to wear an electronic bracelet because he was unable to meet the $50,000
bail.

Last month, Donnelly was harassed twice for videotaping outside a federal
courthouse, including one time when a federal officer got into his face and
stated the following:

“If you get too close to me with that camera, I’ll take it out of your hand and
ram it down your throat”

Although this was clearly a physical threat and there is no doubt who it came
from, the officer was never disciplined because he was still working his beat
since then, according to an interview with Donnelly a couple of weeks back.

The second time he was harassed, a different set of officers threatened to
confiscate his camera.

Both times, he responded politely yet firmly, insisting that he was not
breaking any laws, which he wasn’t.

So I’m looking forward to see how he responded in the video we have

Now with images available almost instantly, and a host of bloggers,
that world is pretty much dead.

Magenta edge bloom, where very bright values abut very dark values, or a
general color cast?

Great work Sasha - I'd move that heart on the bed a bit to give it more

I'd go (ahem) further than that. With some careful setup and using the

excellent series of geometric repetitions.

NiMH C cells are fairly easy to come by; in Oz JarCar sell them, not sure
anywhere else, but any electronics stockist should have them. The ones I
have seen are 4500MAh.

The other alternative is the AA-C cell adapters, but of course this limits
you to the capacity of AA batteries; though they are then cheaper and more
universal.

I have the powerpak III that Pentax sells using 'C' batteries. It
seems to work about as well as my Quantum Battery 2 packs that I used
with my metz and Pentax potato masher units. Recycle times are
fairly close. I found one minor advantage with the Pentax unit in
that when you have to do long sets of pics, you can install another
set of batteries when yours run out. Of course, the downside is that
you have to buy them each time.

I haven't yet seen any commercial pack for the 540 other than the
 Pentax one.

Internet sellers who don't report their sales will no longer be under the
radar. Starting next year, any bank or other payment settlement company that
processes credit cards, debit cards, and electronic payments such as PayPal
will have to issue information returns telling the IRS what merchants receive.
The new returns are Form 1099-K, Merchant Card and Third-Party Payments.

My D1 on the other hand, around 80-90K
But isn't the real question, how many of them were keepers? :)

I think a better question might be are you getting MORE keepers? And
 Why?

There was a smiley at the end of that sentence, after all.

For myself, my percentage of keepers has gone up only slightly
because my standards have risen. What I might have considered a
keeper before I started shooting digital, I wouldn't consider one now.

But you're right, that it's not just the number of the keepers, but
the quality. Remember that link I posted about the stages of a
photographer?

While at the same time, I'm more willing to take chances, to try
and make images I wouldn't have thought I could make before ...
because the few times I did try to make them I failed.

This is certainly true with my photography. I'm at the stage where I
can usually get the shot, by experimenting seven ways from Sunday, and
bracketing in three dimensions.

I'm afraid that I'm not yet to the point where I can usually just go
in and nail a shot on the first try, though it is often one of the
first tries that does end up being the best. It is amazingly helpful
to not only be able to bracket to get the shot, but to be able to look
at all the attempts and learn from them.

Unfortunately, I'm also still at the point where the most effective
way of improving the quality of my work is learning to throw away more
of it.

I can see right away whether the image matches my vision; whether I
 got the shot.

And it has benefited my film shooting as well. Maybe not as many
keepers from film as I used to get, but the ones I do get are
 better.

Ouch! My Sigma 100-300/4 EX lens has been used for well over 30,000
frames almost all with AF - no problems - it uses the screwdriver
method. I have not pushed the SDM on either of my DA* zooms like that
so don't know about reliability. I'm hoping it is ok.

If it was a little more I'd probably be buying a K-7.

 Subject: K20D - Hot pixel ?

After approx 3850 images, my K20D started producing a defect in the
images, not related to SD card or battery charge. It occurs at all ISO's,
all lenses, shutter speeds apertures. Interestingly it is not apparent
 in live view.
I've run the pixel mapping routine several time with no affect on this
 spot.

It evidences itself as a noticeable bright spot near the RH edge of the
image (in landscape orientation), with a vertical black line from top to
 bottom running thru the spot.

Its close enough to the RH edge that it can be cropped out with only a
small loss of image size, but I don't want to have to crop every image.

The body will probably find its way to Pentax Repair, but I thought I'd
get some input from the collective minds on the list. Depending on the
cost to repair, this may push me into getting a K7.

 Your thoughts are welcomed

Well, the lens will not work on the other bodies that I have. I mean the auto

I just had a DA 18-250 stop autofocusing on the K-7. Other lenses
continue to work at this point. It goes stop to stop but never
achieves focus... about a year old. I can't necessarially say it's the
 fault of the camera though.

Clean the lens and body contacts just for giggles.

K 7, maybe shorting out Sd cards

2010-01-19 Thread 272yb
I have had two 16 gig SDHC Sd cards of different makes go bad in the K 7. None
have gone bad my K20 or K10. Also the Simga 70 to 200 F2.8 HSM lens, will no
longer auto focus, (not that I really use auto focus) using the K 7. The lens
will still transmit the f-stop to the camera. This lens is about five months
old, I like the lens, but I begin to wander if the K 7 electronics is going
haywire..I do also like the K 7, and like to shoot with it on all manual
settings. Any thoughts anyone ? Thanks Joe

This one is, as I say, odd. I found it while going through some old
stuff. It's a BW (film) shot from several years ago: Pentax MX,
A50/1.4 and Ilford Delta 400.

This shot was seriously underexposed, yielding a very thin negative
and a very grainy print. But I still kind of liked the shot. So,
rather than trying to hide the grain, I tried to *emphasize* it as
much as possible. I think I like the result...

Mind you though, if it doesn't show up in the card reader, no software
will ever be able to access it!!

2009/11/23 eckinator eckina...@gmail.com:
GetDataBack is available from www.runtime.org and they have a demo
that shows you what the purchase version will recover.
 Good luck

If it is FAT formatted, try GetDataBack - it is in my experience the
best in class of non pro grade, i.e. affordable data recovery tools.
If the pictures are worth a lot to you, get in touch with Kroll
 OnTrack or perhaps also SilverLining.

Re: false focus?

2009-08-03 Thread 272yb
Auto Focus is just for that quick shot, where you just grab your camera and
shoot. We as photographers should not be using auto focus. If you look at my
photos on my page on Photo.net all my photos are shot with manual focus except
the photos that say test under them, that were shot with the 70 - 200 mm Simga
lens. Now I understand when someone's eyes are not as good as they used to be,
you will tend to use auto focus, but they do make contact lens and the like to
improve your eyes. We as photographers and people are getting lazy and not
using our brains.Sorry if I offended anyone on the list. I will admit there is
times when I try the auto focus, but I go back to manual focus all the
time...Joe

A lot of the shots with that lens seem to be way out of focus. Are any
lenses particularly prone to tricking the camera into thinking that
they are in focus, when they actually aren't?

I don't seem to have this problem on other lenses.

It doesn't seem to be a motion blur issue.

I was shooting tonight, in raw, in several modes of high iso noise
reduction at ISO 3200. At first glance it doesn't seem to make any
difference, though I'll still have to test more scientifically.

I got a call from Mark Davis at Pentax today to discuss my
issues. Without looking at my pictures he seemed to think that my
camera sounded like it was performing nominally. After the
conversation, I emailed him the links, with explanations, to my
various test sets, but I haven't heard back.

A lot of frustrating things may be happening with my camera, many of
them quite likely my doing, but I must commend Pentax, and especially
John C, because they seem to be making every reasonable, and perhaps
even some more than reasonable, effort to resolve the issue.

On the bright side, I seem to be learning a lot about my camera.

Doug, you could look at the 70-200 MM F2.8 Simga HSM II Lens. I bought one and
like it so far. With a 1.4 convert, it will become a 120 mm to 300 mm F4.0. Not
as pricey as the 50-250 Pentax unit. I do not have the 50-250 lens but there is
one thing I do not like. That is the way the lens opens up. long barrel comes
out from main part. I could be wrong. I know Paul has one, ask him about
that.To me that might and will get in the way when I shoot sports in a location
where there are other photographers trying to get the same shot..I would rather

so I'm looking at either the DA Star 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM or the DA
Star 60-250mm F4 ED (IF) SDM and the prices are way different, 500
smackers worth at BH. Is the 60-250 really that much better, and keep in
mind that linear thought and I rarely collide.

For the difference, I could also get the 21Ltd and a grip for the K-7.

What to do, what to do?

Doug, I didn't have to make the decisions you made, as I already have the
21mm.
I haven't handled the 50-135 all that much. I had a pre production unit on
loan from Pentax Canada (via my pusher) for a while sometime before the lens
was officially released to the world, and that is my only experience with
it.
I thought it was an excellent lens, but also a lens that shared the same
problem that I think 80-200mm lenses have on the 135 format, which is that
they just don't have enough reach for my taste.
I have an 80-200/2.8 lens which is just about the perfect telephoto zoom on
the cropped sensor camera, but for the size, a little more reach would be
nice.
This was why I was so impatient about the 60-250.
The 60-250, I am sure you have handled one, is a pretty chunky lens. Much
bigger, IIRC than the 50-135.
As far as optical quality is concerned, I doubt that there is a great deal
of difference between the 50-135 and the 60-250. Both are fine optics. I
wanted the extra reach, so I chose to wait for the 60-250.
No regrets, it's a terrific optic.

I guess, think back to your film days, did you find that often the 80-200
range of zooms was to be too short to float your boat? If so, then the
60-250 is the answer, no doubt about it. It has plenty of reach.

Having said this, I couldn't live without the vertical grip now for what I
shoot. I've been doing a fair number of model shoots, and in this type of
photography the vertical camera orientation is what I use almost all the
time.
The grip rules.
However, if you spend most of your time shooting landscapes off a tripod,
there is no pressing reason to get the grip, so it comes down to the 21mm
lens.
Do you favour wide angle shots or long telephoto shots more?
Does your photography style allow for stiched images? If so, then you can
use a longer lens most of the time to emulate the 21.

I suspect that for most people, the 50-135 coupled with the DA21 will
probably be the more useful lens combination..

If you are considering other options, I ended up getting the Sigma
100-300/4 EX lens a few years back. It is excellent - has even more
reach than the Pentax 60-250 at the same speed. It also has Internal
zoom/focus so the lens never changes length or balance - works very
well. Just another thought.

Hi all.

I added three more shots to my Flowers folder.

http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=918347

All three shot with D200, Tamron 90 f2.8 macro and sRGB colour space
set in camera.

Not sure i like this set up. I had to do a lot of LR luminance and
saturation to get the colours close. It seems nice enough on the flash
shots i did of the kitchen after i stripped the paper off, as before
shots. The colours seem pretty close, but the flower shots are all
flat.

I was tempted to go with one system as opposed to the two i have now,
but i'm happier with my K10D for flowers and close up photos, the
colour seems more vibrant. Although it could also be the D200, i've
never been happy with the camera. No setting seems to give me nice
colours and sharpness at the same time.

So, Nikon for action, Pentax for landscapes and macros. Oh, Canon for IR.

Looks like its a three system house then.

Dave

if 35mm only, you really do want to track down a dedicated scanner for
best results. The Minolta Scan Dual and Scan Multi Pro models are good
and can be had cheaply. You will need also buy Vuescan to use them on
Vista or OS X 10.4 or later. The Nikon Coolscan's are also good and
only a bit more on the used market. The Nikon 4000 and 5000 are king,
 but cost like it too.

For Medium Format or sheet film, I recommend the Epson's. V500 for MF
 and V700/V750 for a do-everything scanner. Betterscanning.com 120
holders and ANR inserts are also well worth investing in as the Epson
120 holder is flimsy and poor at holding film flat.

Other options are even better, but have serious costs (Nikon 8000 or
 9000, Imacons).

I have to agree with Adam's selection though the Minolta AF-5400 II is
a worthy contender for best 35mm film scanner IMO. I own the Konica
Minolta
AF-5400 II, Epson Perfection V700 Photo and the Nikon LS-8000 ED, each
do what they do very well, that's why I have one of each.

G'day all

I've PESOed an image from this junkyard in western Sydney before. It's
a goldmine of photo opportunities.

This old Holden sedan is destined to rust away on the top of a tin shed:

Photoshoppery Alert!!

The original sky was particularly bland so I've substituted a new one.
Was that wrong?.

Comments and criticisms appreciated.

Cheers

Hello.

It has been brought to my attention that I did not post any photographs

the family therefore I kind of need a third party to be involved here.

So here are two shots made by a good fellow from Russian Penta Club:

Please disregard the name of the shooter as it is actually his nickname
from the forum.

Cheers.
